After a poor experience last year in the UP due to poor trails I decided I'd give it one more shot this year. Group of five of us heading up tonight and I'm reading nothing but horrible trail reports on here. Are the groomers still broken. Is everything moguled out. I understand it can get rough on weekends but last year we had horrible trails during the week and was hoping that was a one time event. If thats how the trails are sitting right now I might as well scratch this trip and save the 16 hrs in a truck and $1000 bucks, plus my back. Any recent trail and groomer updates. Thank You

Well there's plenty of chisel plowed fields here in Iowa still to ride. No snow but slinging rooster tails of mud might b funner than gettin my sack whacked by the seat goin over miles of endless head thumping moguls. If the groomers r stuck and broke down then there's no point in anyone going to the UP to try and ride. Just my two cents! Cancel your trips boys and girls.
Was up there this weekend and the trails were pounded bad. Groomers were out but can not keep up. Not much sled traffic yesterday and the trails were still bad. My back is paying for it today. Agree on saving the $45 permit fee. Trails should be in better shape than they were.
Off trail was GREAT though!

I agree EVERYONE should stay away from the UP. It`s gotta be horrible.

The problem is that the snow they got last week was a powder and will not pack. With the new snow and warm up maybe the snow will set. Also 2000 sleds in a hundred mile is the other problem. Should be better during the week. I saw alot of trailers head that way.. Besafe and have FUN..

I rode in the Woodruff, WI to Hurley area on Saturday. Trails were in good to very good condition. We ran on about a 5 mile stretch when going from Vilas to Iron County on 8. The rest of the day they were good. Certainly they need more snow-they got a bunch Sunday-but we were able to ride and not damage our equipment-backs included. Coming from IA you need a trail permit in WI too, but I feel anywhere from Minocqua north you should have a blast! I probably don't ride as wild as some on here do, but we thought they were great considering they literally had no snow two weeks earlier.

pski, where in N WI were you? Trails around Corny were bad. I rode out of (home) Iron River WI to Port Wing and Herbster on Saturday and they were not bad.
I love how peeps think the groomers should groom right in front of them when they are out riding. And you think your back is paying for it, try getting in a groomer for 12 hrs at a time, your neck will "pay for it" looking behind all night.
Sorry you were not happy, but our trails are never as rough as the UP get on a busy weekend.

I've been riding for over 20 years. I've probably taken at least one trip to Bayfield County per year since then. They do a good job with their trails.
That said I've been going to the Keweenaw now for over 10 years. In my opinion starting about 5 years ago they've had the best grooming anywhere. Not close even. It's unfortunate the traffic is this heavy and leaving some with a bad taste.

Its settled, sleds loaded and Im leaving in an hour. We'll have a good time either way. At least this trip I don't have real high expectations of the trails so I won't be dissapointed, maybe pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the feedback and I'll try to post a report when I return.

Hats off to the Paradise area groomers as saturday night and sunday were awesome with numerous groomer sightings and nice trails to prove it. Thanks boys!! Clipped through chippawa country a bit around Hulbert lake and they were nice also. They were a lttle lumpy by pine stump and the burned off area northeast of there.
I bet all the bar and motels love to hear you say that... no thanks i'll stay home and look at my clean snowmobiles and wait for snow(maybe next year)

your right skylar. ridnig to the derby track on saturday and say the groomer groming 3 inchs of snow. it was half bare after he went over it. atleast the trail though town had enough slush and water on the black top for the slides.

you should have saw it on saturday skylar. it was mint! we drove to the derby track and saw the groomer at a road crossing and the trail was half grass after he went over it. some peoples decscription of being decent is junk to people that care for there equipment and dont just drop it off at the dealer when there done with it

I AM the UP spokesperson and we all have declared a boycott on grooming, it's to evasive to the environment. All the foliage gets trampled, and the poor snow, what did it do to deserve to be trampled and flattened out. The snow fell from the sky beautifully and we peoples have a right to alter it's lye?
We don't want the trails to be smooth thus rough trails. Could you imagine what would happen if we put effort forth to do a good job of grooming, we just cannot do that. We actually run the groomer down the trails but don't really cut the moguls down because skiers like moguls and if skiers like moguls than they're good enough for sledders.
Remember, I speak for all groomers throughout the UP, actually the world,, yup!
We could probably change our attitude if all you peoples will give us another chance, I beg forgiveness and ask for ONE MORE CHANCE.
So, if we groomers get serious about grooming and try an do a good job to save your backs so you can spend your hard earned money up here, would you please give us another chance? Thank you.

to answer the question of thread title, the UP has 174 groomers and 183 are down right now. Uncle Jimmy was out draggin a chain link fence w/some cinder blocks tied on and running cross Ontonagon and Houghton grades with his 1971 Tundra, looked damn good to me!
I like that,,, I groom for our club(490mi in 3weeks) and made a comment like that(see southern wi trails back in dec)(i came on here and said the groomers are going on strike and my club just about flipped out! after 25 years of working 400 to 500 hours a year for free on our trails and putting up with what we had in dec its making me think about this sport a little different. good luck and glad you got snow.
