5x5 sounds like its the tank. Those are usually just a few inches below the grade and warm water from house may enough to warm the tank up. Might want to search for lid. They have a rebar handle or something similar.Could be drainfield too but only if its very very old. Hard to say

I hope you had the septic inspected before closing sometimes county makes you bring house septic to latest code makes you pump every 3 years are so if you don't comply they shut you down until up to code.

Steve, go to the Baraga county court house and see the permits pulled for your house. It may tell you what you have? If there is nothing on record,you have something very old,or done on the weekend with out a permit. Very common up your way. Find the lid,threaded rod,rebar,what ever you have laying around. Open the lid,and google what you see. The laws have changed. You should be grandfathered. Septic company's are obligated buy law to bring things up to code. Be careful who you hire to come out and look at it.

I'll just call the old owner hes a pretty stand up guy plus he's the retired county inspector
X2..... got to be careful with these things if county is instructed to bring sold homes up to code you are screwed for the cost. This has been ongoing in WI for about 25 years not sure where the Yoop stands on these issues? If lake front no mercy out in the country more forgiving.

I would have a respectable excavator/contractor check it out and not involve the County or local officials. The County will go BY THE BOOK and will end up costing you way more money that you will want to pay, not to mention they may condemn the property until it is brought to code.

I don't know what type of septic it is but I do know one thing I'm the first person to hook up to it I know because I plumbed to the new 4 in schedule 40 pipe sticking in the basement .But the house hasn't been lived in about 7 years so I shouldn't really call it new. The old one was 3.5 in pipe to the old septic. I put some ridx down there when we first did the work. There's 5 of us that live here and the washer is going non stop and showers everyday like I said no problems with smells or soft ground outside or backups just was a little concerned about the snow melting in that one spot.
