Worried about the Base, close the Trail like Marathon County did. I think we may have Creeks opening up now and Lincoln may have to close anyway. I checked ours yesterday and they were still froze up. With all the water around I hope it freezes before it washes things out.

If the trails are open, and you want to ride....you ride.

When I read these threads, or groomer threads, I swear some people think trails are meant to be maintained and preserved instead of used.

Heading out soon. I will let youse know how bad my snowmobile wrecked the snowmobile trails.
Trail use is self regulating. Folks will cut it short if trails are bad....If crop land is an issue then yes...trails need to be closed sooner to prevent loss.

Yup trails either opened or closed. Make the best of it.
All though I get being protective of your "home base".

40 miles so far this AM. The base is still here in Central Forest Co. Some dirt some still very good.

The heavy rain stayed west of here.

I was in town yesterday for a funeral....and it was raining, and 42 degrees...I counted at least 20 sleds, coming into and out of town to get gas (over a 3 hour period)....I was floored...they had to have been running on mud and gravel......what ticks me off is...what little base was out there is gone now...all because of a few knuckleheads...I hate to tell people not to ride when we have a winter like this...the businesses up here have had a hard enough time....but man did that chap my *** yesterday. Because you "GOTTA RIDE"...you may have ruined what little base we had, for the rest of the winter.

I don't know...maybe I am just old and crabby....lol....What do you guys think?? Am I outta line for ranting about this??

First off, sorry about your loss...friend, family or colleague...condolences.

Now then, I do get what you are saying, but how do you know these people trailered up there? Could it be their sleds stay up there all year round and have no means of trailering them up north more? Could have been all locals? Some might say that you getting upset with people riding could be seen as just as selfish as those riding. They are everyone's trails. I do feel there should be conditions that will warrant trail closures like in some other counties. I dont know why they dont up by you. Any idea?

I was told that if they close them they have to remain closed...the clubs here try to stay open at least into mid march...if snow is good, then until april 1st....I like that they stay open until the bitter end..Because if we do get more snow we can ride....already clubs just to the south of us are closing...It's February for cripes sake!!!....BTW.. I was not trying to be selfish about the trails...I was just thinking (while watching the guys riding in the rain)..that my old man would have cuffed me upside the head if he saw me out riding in those conditions...but then he was immaculate with his sleds and equipment, and that's what rubbed off on me. I guess some of you weren't raised that way, and just don't care...so be it...it's your sled...your money.

So Lincoln and Oneida is "if they close they close for the season"?.

Over my way, Barron opens and closes when needed. We had a base worth saving and by the looks of it, it was saved. But there's no significant snow in the forecast for the next 10 days......bummer!

Yep...when they close they do not reopen (at least in the Tomahawk area/northern Lincoln county)...Tomahawk tries to follow oneida county's lead...not sure about Merrill area.

I saw a bobcat on the trail yesterday in crap conditions.
My first sled ever was a '70 Bobcat.
Did I come full circle?

heck no....headin up thur evenin' to ride what is there for me.

I'm in the camp that I have to ride during my planned week, almost no matter what. I put in for vacation a year in advance, book airfare and rental car a month out, and hope for the best. I don't have a trailer, and even if I did I couldn't pull it with the rental car, so we can only ride from one spot. We've been making this annual winter trip (to family cottage) for 8 years now, and we've only been disappointed once (about 5 years ago?). It sounds like we got lucky this year during our visit over Prez Day weekend and had a great time.
That said, when we had the disappointing year, we were perfectly content (almost) to ride the lakes and forest/seasonal roads a few miles, park on a lakeshore, and spend the afternoon with the group around a campfire roasting brats, making "pie iron" treats, and throwing a football around rather than trashing my equipment too badly by riding for miles in crap.
