Wisconsin Trail Pass - thumbs down

From reading this thread it sounds like some people have all the answers. It would have been nice if these people would have provided their input in my original thread that I started on 3-22-12!

Is the WI Trail Pass perfect? Probably not as it is impossible to please everyone. However, it did accomplish its goals. 1.) Generating much needed funds that go directly into the segregated trail fund. 2.) AWSC membership is at an all time record high!

I don't have a problem with the Trail pass. I have a problem with how the trail pass is given. There is ZERO reason you can't just get a pass and print it at a gas station or any other store that sells a DNR license. There is zero reason to wait one, two or up to 8 weeks for the DNR to print your stickers.

There wasn't the provision in the law to allow outlets to print them I am pretty sure - plus these are not like printed hunting/fishing licenses since they have anti-theft tech built into them. (VOID when removing). There seems to be some issue with the wait.... well my reply to that is why the heck did you put off purchasing then? Waiting for snow? Be prepared and purchase in the fall and it won't be an issue.

Yes, believe it or not the majority of owners who keep there sleds registered ride locally or when WI gets snow in the southern Counties, many IL residents come up for a day ride. The convenience of not needing a trail pass to ride was taken from the opportunity riders and then the folks from IL who want to day ride and are willing to pay the trail pass toll can't even get a sticker.....something that has been done for over 20 years in both WI and MI outlets.

It's clear to me, this 3 year registration, and annual trail pass, whether it was CapStep or whatever they call it, has been a total failure. They increased the cost, effectively put a tax on us as riders, force us into clubs, and made it inconvenient as heck to get the trail pass. More government bureaucracy run amok. I called Madison to get a comment from Walkers office, and got no return call, so that's fine, he won't get any campaign donation from me next time.

Where are those free trails at?

If you want un-groomed State owned trails to ride on, then by all means scrap the program and that's all you will have left. If you desire a network of trails on both private and public land, then you need to pay the price to get it done. You can't ride for free and expect groomed trails everywhere. If you are a member of a club and attend meetings and go out a work on the trails or go out at midnight to groom the trails you understand. Yeah, they messed up the delivery of the passes this year if you are a non AWSC member....should have left the printers at the DNR outlets. If you are a member of the AWSC....then you get you passes within a week.

Well going on my second year of this it couldn't have taken more than 10 min of my time on their interweb forms... This includes renew club dues $25 and 4 discounted wisconney trail stickeys thru AWSC at $10 ea. Waited less than 7 days for ea. to be received in my Illnoise mailboxer... I probably spent anutha 5 min or so renew'n two WI reg. also online...

I could see if I waited to the last minute purchase stickeys to ride would kinda suck as carrying that extra piece of paper around would be a burden...

It’s no more expensive than a regular WI registration.
Club fee=$30.00. Three years=$90.00
Trail pass=$10.00. Three years=$30.00
WI Registration for three years=$30.00
Total $150.00 for three years.

Out of state trail pass=$50.00. Three years=$150.00

The only ones who save in WI are those with two or more sleds as the club fees cover all sleds in that family. I’d rather give my money to the club than to the DNR.

I was hoping you had a better answer. So can we >snowmobilers< and all the out of state folks wanting a sticker to ride legally here, will be given a receipt instead?...And we should take this as a better system? You have got to be kidding.....AWSC, please.

Thought you were more informed. The DNR provides out of state permits, not the AWSC...............

You obviously never bought a new sled, ATV or SxS, under the current rules so shut your pie hole.

LOL...That will never happen riding buds don't know when, where or if they will chase snow?...then we have snow and the scramble is on. Sure some are prepared but many are not and want to react to the moment. AWSC and DNR can't do that right now and NOT meeting the customer's specific need. This needs to change and can change imo. If not Cap Step may end ... trail permit rapid response is NOT working. DNR & AWSC can't fix it if they they don't know what is broken and trail permit rapid response is broken.

On a positive note you can get 100 different lottery scratch offs at every gas station in this state.

....seriously....these permits could get spit out of a vending machine.... it could be that simple.

This thread is about total miss information. I just called the DNR customer service line and ask them myself. The reason they do not print stickers anymore is because of budget cuts and it's cheaper to mail them out. 888-936-7463. Call them yourself if you don't believe me. It's total BS to blame cap step or the awsc. I don't want to hear any BS about how it used to be simple. You can go buy a sled, register it and order a trail pass with a credit card on your phone and leave the guy's yard you bought it from on your newly purchased sled and you are legal. It's that easy and simple. Do I like the fact you can't get a printed sticker? Absolutely not! I'm sure it's 100 percent politics to get snowmobilers upset and blame Madison for cutting the budgets. But please, quit blaming AWSC or Cap-step. You just wrong if you do.

The complaints look to be related to the way the DNR is handling their end of it......

As I stated in another post....all involved in this new process needed to be on the same page. AWSC lobbied for it, The DNR was past sole operation of fund collecting, and Tha state legislature was to work out the details. That would mean keeping the entire system working smoothly through transition. There are AWSC insiders lurking and posting here and have yet to provide any answers why something as simple as spitting out trail permits as in the past, was now disconnected entirely.

I don't care if the DNR is seemingly miffed and throwing a hiss fit....the state republic legislature is asleep at the wheel in monitoring the transition. ...
Yes I voted for all of them I could.

More venon....imo, once that CS passed, the AWSC didn't care how things were handled other than getting discounted trail permits into the hands of new and old club members.

They have done a great job in that resoect. Too bad the marginal opportunity riders are now left out in the cold.

I am optimistic that all will be worked out.

We were stopped by DNR folks at Trail 8 and Trail 51 intersection outside Boulder Junction Sunday checking for trail stickers. It was a guy and a woman team, and they were very nice and very polite.

The guy walked to one of our sleds that had preordered the non-resident sticker, and he said he had to see it, as he had not yet seen one on a sled :rolleyes-new:
