Btw....just wanted to throw this out there...not sure why soooo many people are butt hurt by Yamaha engines being in other brands....I owned sno jets with Yamaha engines, and a good friend of mine had s a roll o flex with a Yamaha engine...and they were pretty damn good machines back in the day..so it just won't faze me if I have to buy a cat with a Yamaha 4 stroke...or any brand for that matter....if ski doo had Yamaha engines...I'd have to be different and paint it orange and blue and call it a moto-ski... (hate that yellow, and the scoobie doo blue...and there are too many all black doos out there)...lol

its not butthurt.....but my butt did hurt every time I rebuilt my vmax's crank and had to carry spare belts and replace rivets after every ride.....my yami motors were 2nd to working on the all the time...john deeres were 1st so that tells ya how bad their engines were....GOD I LOVE SUZUKI and cry rivers of tears everytime someone mentions yami and cat together.....it makes ya want to rip a t-shirt in half and tie it like a bandana around me head and kneel down facing east with candles lit and commit hari-kari with a table spoon

I take that back....yamis were worked on the most on engines...deeres were mechanical stuff

You did it again - LMAO - literally....out loud, in the office. Don't do that anymore plz. LOL
Ever think about doing strictly snowmobile stand-up - maybe in Hurley, before the dancin' hags come on stage? LOL

LOL.

.76 YAMAHA 340 and 440 SRX was good for a dozen 1/4 mile WOT blasts......record setting speed ain't cheap.

Yamaha trips were bullet proof....10 k on the 02 viper.
700 SRX still gives everyone's 800/850 twins fits.

NO..lol....it's almost as bad as that garage floor gray they used for years as well...I swear somebody is color blind in quebec (the Scooby doo blue..the mystery machine is horrid)...lol

It appears to me the young people like the wild colors, old people do not.

This thread has even brought up the young people not being much into the sport anymore, but we kno who BRP is targeting....

See....that's how it works..if you get a bad one, then that brand is BAD..I never had an issue with any Yamaha four stroke or two stroke...However..one of my cat's,(twice) and three of my doos got towed....I also towed more cats in the early 2000's than any other brand (three of my buddies bought firecats, all three were towed home by my Doo that year)...so your experience is not mine..I was very sour on Suzuki's after my f-1000...what a turd...my apex would spank it bad...loved the ride and the handling of the f series, and my old crossfire....hated the smokey, vibrating...SLOW motors (the f-1000 would get spanked by any 800 or apex, and the 600 crossfire was no match for doo or Polaris 600...they'd eat it for lunch).... Oddly enough I don't hate cat...even with the lemon f-1000...my doos were far worse, and more expensive to fix (stators and pistons)....again...I hear ya...one bad one can put a bad taste in your mouth, and once you get two that suck...you won't buy that brand again.

Once a guys garage is full of one particular brands stuff, it's hard to go with another brand. I'm sitting all sorts of Polaris and Yamaha clutching and misc. other parts. To buy a Doo would be so foreign. ..and pricey for me.
I was on Yamaha 2 and 4 st for 13 years. Still have 2 of the 4 st.....ride both , but always go to my number 3 sled. ...the 15 AXYS 800....zoom zoom.

Good for you and your buddies. When I was your age we had the same thing going on. The common joke was that if your house cost more than your toys you don't have enough toys. It may not be uncommon for you guys but it is unheard of around this area. Go out and play now when you are young. Soon enough you will just be a grouchy 50 year old with crappy reflexes and funky prostates.

IDK if you & your buds have familes but when you have kids you won't be running to the northwoods leaving home responsibilities to Ma & playing with snowmobiles. It sure didn't work that way with me or my kids & now I have a couple teenage grandkids as well. My kids all have their own boats and waterski...totally my fault..lol.. but none of them including son inlaws have any interest in snowmobiles....boating is easier with family and little ones... snowmobiling not so much. So have fun enjoy youself your life will change and so will your buds lives as responsibilies add up and take their toll on play time. Changes are not a bad thing just know it's coming.:)

Your kids are smart, with boating, you usually don't have to worry about the lake having water or check for "conditions "

Like many true sledders, raising a family doesn't mean absolutely no snowmobiling, just a time of either a low cost opportuinity sled or a kids sled as well for lcoal riding....at least for us....never had the coin to head north. Just glad to have had local riding available.

Hey, that's me right now. 3 little ones - 5 to 8. That must be why I have an 06 right now and usually only get up twice a year for shorter trips

Congrats on your recent IPO.

Too funny. I rode with a Polaris jacket from 2004-2007 after I converted to Doo and then another few years with Cat gloves (good sled clothing is hard to come by). I still have those green Cat gloves and use them to ride when it is bitterly cold.

Nice, when I was in my 20's I could barely cover my bar tabs and rode a $500 sled.

I do agree on the 850 though, I reordered too.

I talked to a sled dealer who has been in the bus for 50 years, and he says 2 years from now and the Yami badge is gone. Not good.!!! I have waited for the "all new Yami" sled for 4 years now, one that did not "need" power steering. Snowmobiles should not need power steering!!! But it's not to be, and never was from what we can clearly see now. I'm very disappointed in Yami as I feel really misled by them. I have been buying Doos now for the last 8 sleds, and not disappointed in many, many miles. For years prior on many Poos. Not brand loyal, as I have owned many brands over the 50 years riding. We just buy what fits, and rides best. Doo has continually further developed there engines, 2/4 stroke, suspensions, ride balance/handling, and so on. I am very thankful that Doo has pushed the development as they have, as it caused the other brands to do the same, and we all benefit from this, no matter your brand. Doo is where they are in market share because of this development process. Now Kip, if that Doo/Yami deal would have went through, it would have caused a bunch of life insurance claims!!! On both sides??? And 1 brand would have been gone for sure. Again, not good.

Here's my theory. It's based on my own personal experiences as well as friends of mine with families.

I don't have actual statistics that can prove this out...only an observation of mine

1. It doesn't seem to me that the younger (20's or even early 30's) generation has the available cash to invest in our sport. I think this is partially due to our economic environment we are in at the moment. the buying power of our hard earned cash is not what it used to be. Salaries are stagnant yet the price of sleds, automobiles, rent (for the younger generation) are all sky high. Income is not keeping pace.

2. When you mix #1 with the fact that most families are just starting out the money is set aside for diapers, day care, food, etc...In that age group most of us know from experience a lot of times family responsibilities get in the way of riding. Single people of course won't have this problem but most of us eventually have families. So now not only money but time gets in the way. When you don't have the time you are not going to spend the money on something you can't do anyways. If you do in fact have the money...you may still spend it on a sled and squeeze in a trip or two...no money...no spending on riding.

I think the older age of the riders is due to the fact of not having #1 or #2 getting in the way. Kids are older or now riding with us and we have finally started to earn enough money to afford the sport. My opinion is that hopefully we can get our economy rev'd up to finally help the wages of workers (middle class & younger people starting out) catch up with the cost of living so they have a little left over to spend on recreation.

My son is now 25 and I know for a fact if it wasn't for me helping him out with extra time off here and there he wouldn't be riding and he's single! I can give him some extra time off and to be honest I even control his pay. He works for me. I want to have him earning more but I also need to maintain budgets too. My managers ( even me at the time working for my Dad) made more money (compared to cost of living) in the 80's and 90's than they do now. There just isn't enough to go around. If the economy were to work it's way out of this anemic growth rate of 1 or 1 1/2% and jumped into the 3% or more growth rate maybe wages would bump up too. I know in my business I would then be able to afford to pay higher wages and would be able to retain workers better and attract higher qualified workers...at all levels.

This is my personal opinion on the "dying sport". I don't think this is a case of a certain percentage of our society not liking the sport anymore. I think it's not as easy to afford..time and money.

Of course....SNOWY WINTERS WOULD ALWAYS HELP!

yep , it is a dying sport :-(

I think this is NOT common, You all are just in a better position than most in that age bracket. The amount of disposable income over the entire spectrum is less now than in the past. Especially for the younger generation, with the cost of an education these days. (And as posted in other replies, housing cost, and general living expenses) Coupled with the fact that there are not the good factory jobs, and Union construction jobs that were available back when some us, (baby boomers) entered the job market. Even when I entered the job market, the Job prospects, were beginning to narrow significantly.

Too funny. I rode with a Polaris jacket from 2004-2007 after I converted to Doo and then another few years with Cat gloves (good sled clothing is hard to come by). I still have those green Cat gloves and use them to ride when it is bitterly cold.

LOL, I wore my Yamaha jacket that my Dad bought when purchasing the "81 Phazer for a long time while riding Doo, Poo and the Cat I had.
Which were all in the $150 to $650 price range.
Never had a NEW sled till well into the 2000's or Brand new truck till 2004. Not so much as not being able to afford it, but rather seeing my money better used for family benefit. Than being used up on depreciation. Now it doesn't bother me as much to lose some money on depreciation. Although my current truck was not bought new but, 6ish years old with 32k miles. Way more ":Bang for the Buck"
