The tractor is loaded and ready to head north...tomorrow!

It did arrive and we swapped out the load for the blower. A bit of a learning curve, but I can see it taking less than 5-10 minutes once I get some more practice. The blower is unbelievable! It tossed the slush I was scraping off the drive way 50+ feet. I cannot even imagine what it will do...

    What Was Your Best Accessory?

My first thought was- Nothing! But then I remembered...The cow-catcher bumper I put on the Proclimb. Not a single scratch or dent on the entire sled in this incident (my sled is stuck in the trees on the right:eek: ). Say no more. -John

OK, so here we go. Most of you know the drill. Guess the date that the Laurium Glacier will melt. First one to guess the correct date wins a Keweenaw Kamo Sweatshirt. Others guessing the correct date, but after it has already been guessed will win a KK sticker. Here is a shot of the Glacier...

    Bag found north of Houghton

I was contacted by the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau. They said there was a snowmobile bag found on the trails north of the bridge, in Keweenaw County a few weeks ago, and no one has claimed it. Persons wanting to claim the bag must call and ID the bag and its contents. -John

Time lapse of storm from Calumet High School

Well, even though many social media posts and even our own illustrious news paper declared the storm did not live up to hype (scratching my head on that one!), here is a time lapse of the storm (several days worth) from the Calumet High School. Too bad the snow piled up and blocked the view at...

    Bleezard in the Keweenaw

I am guessing that the Big Lake is back in business to some degree, as a look at the cams in the area seems to indicate areas favored by a west wind are getting hit the hardest. This has been the look at our place all day today. A least another 6", maybe 8", on top of the 6" overnight. If the...

    Computer Programmer Needed!

This really should be posted in the off topic area, but I REALLY need to get this done, or some day soon, my ship will be sunk. I have a computer program that I use on a daily basis and as described below, soon I will be up a creek without a paddle if I do not address the future. Basically...

    Opinions on Consumer Reports?

Ok, so I decided to subscribe to Consumer Reports and got the "free" Buying Guide for 2014. What scared the heck out of me was that in items I feel I have a pretty good idea on what is a good/bad product (cordless drills, chainsaws, snowthrowers), every single top ranked item was something that...

Comparison between the pending storm and the Fitz storm

No two storms are every equal and this will be the case between the storm for Thur/Fri and the storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgearld on Nov 10, 1975, but the does look to be some strong similarities between the two storms with their track and strength, with some ideas calling for the pending low...

Once in a lifetime tip over superior???

Then stop talking about it and do it! Just let me know how that first 6-8 miles goes over open water and then the slush (not ice) for most of the rest of the trip and the 1-2 mile wide areas of open water in spots. Every map you have shown is a hand drawn generalization of things. I like to...

    superior Ice

I was basing my statement on this image from yesterday. To me it looked like only 2-4% of the lake was "purely open", as noted as solid, dark dark blue. Any grey or white denotes some amount of ice in/on the lake. -John

The Old Lady Just Will Not Give Up

Yesterday when I checked the satellite imagery to see the amount of ice in the lake, it looked like around 96-98%, the most so far this season. Almost no ice-free water. Yet we picked up around an inch or so of system snow before 7 am this morning, then some big old fluffy LES flakes started...

    A reason for hope.

So I have been watching the ice in Lake Superior pretty closely the past few days. The weekend was not good for us UP LES lovers, but the past 36 hours has provided steady winds of 20-25 mph, with gusts to 35. Even with the temps hovering around zero during the day and in the -15 to -20 degree...
