121" sled in back of truck (8 ft bed) - tailgate up or down?

We had a sled in the back of the truck along with 2 in the trailer so we put the tailgate up under the track of the sled. I'm not sure if that was the best way to do - is that hard on a sled to travel that way? Is it better to leave the tailgate down and strap it in?

Not hard on the sled hard on the tailgate!!! I ruined one already never again. Tailgate down or with an enclosed I just remove tailgate as it takes about a minute and a half.

I got a 5 1/2 ft bed and run with the tailgate down hauling my 144. That 121 can't stick out that far with an 8ft bed!

gate up unless u like a trashed tail gate and extra room for Tupperware tubs under sled 2 across back under sled

naw.. been loading a sled in my truck with gate down for 12 years, gate opens and closes first attempt. got the rhino liner carbides have yet to dig thru it. the tupperware tubs are what the extended cab is for.

I have the tailgate down. With the trailer behind I use a drop hitch off about four to five inches. If you do not the tailgate will hit the trailer.

the top and inside is not the part that can get blasted with sand salt and ice . I trashed my old z71 gate driving to co a few yrs back the sand is what I thin did it.
heck my gate on my 13 f150 is junk now first a bud hit the gas on his sled when truck had less than 6000 mi and it cracked the plastic top then this yr I was hero unloading and floored it in reverse and completely tore off the gate top . and the carbides have pealed up the tin panel on the inside. now early season I must have had a few to many hits and thought I latched the trailer to the ball but as soon as I went to load a sled I found out I did not latch it lol .so I now also have a lovely huge dent and scrape in the lower 1/2 of the gate. oh well it is 1.5 yrs old cant stay new forever .
I will be hitting a junk yard before trade in when ford comes out with the f150 oil burner

I never done this but thought it would be alot easier whenI see sleds going down the haulway all jacked up in the back. Why not just take the skis off? Its 2 bolts?

If I leave gate down I put a board under track to keep studs from digging in liner. If I put gate up I put a board across gate to keep studs from messing up gate. If you put it up though make sure sled is not full of gas. Overflow will work and act as a syphon and suck the gas out....dont ask how I know that...lol

We always do tailgate down. Place a 4x8 sheet of plywood or polyboard down on bed of truck to protect against studs & carbides. Strap it in & go. Never had single a problem. I think it's hard on tailgate to have it up, sled bouncing on it going down road. JMO, you see it both ways.

is that a yamaha in the back? i thought from reading other threads that you couldn't pick them up? :)

I really wish I had read this before today! Tore up the top of my tailgate with my studs. Was totally not thinking. :( Dummy!
