2000 Polaris Indy Super Sport

Hey guys I am probably like most of you, waiting till next year, so to pass the time I just would like some opinions on a sled I am looking at.

I am 18 decent summer job going to college next year. I am in no way a "hardcore" rider but I go north a few times a year and get to ride in Ohio whenever it snows. I also ice fish whenever mother nature allows.

So anyways Dad is cutting me off his leash and making me get my own sled if I want to ride up north anymore. I am not really concerned about speed. Just want reliability and a all around "good" sled...

I have looked at many sleds and have stumbled onto a possible backyard goldmine (for me). A 2000 polaris 550 indy supersport. It is in great condition, seat, hood, basically everything I looked at was in good condition. It has 2,088 miles. Oil levels were good when I looked at it, and it started on the third pull. Felt like good compression? I couldn't tell if dash lights worked but brights and tail lights worked along with hand/thumb warmers. Brand new carbides and new belt with a spare. All paper work. Only thing "wrong" I could see was they took it out last year and got water/muddy water on it (its an ohio sled lol) and its dirty..... and they have come down from 1500 to a thousand but my high end budget leads me to about $900. I just would like some thoughts on the sled and if anyone has experiences with the super sport because I thought they were the "cheap" model.

Good for Dad. (And you for acknowledging that he cut the cord and need to find something that fits within your means.) Sounds like you have a budget, and found a good sled for the $. Make an offer for $800, expecting to meet in the middle. I too was in your same shoes once. Dad cut the cord, so I worked all summer pulling cow teets to fund my addiction. Making that first purchase was one of my best memories to this day. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

I am not a Poo fan, but this Poo 550 fan looks good, give'er a bath, good to go. The 550 is a good motor, pretty much bullet proof. I think if you get it for a Grand you would be doing well, unless there is something wrong somewhere, then go lower on the offer. The book on that sled is a Low retail of $910 and an Ave retail of $1200. Nice find for the money, good luck.-Mezz

If ridden hard the 550s last forever. If ridden like a grandpa, the have a super lean mid-range and tend to blow up. My dad blew his up twice in 4000 miles. Not a bad motor overall, for the price, it sounds like a good sled.

I had two 550 fans a 2000 trail touring and 2003 edge X sled. The 2003 was better never a problem the trail touring blew a voltage regulator.I sold them in 2006 the 2000 had 5500mi the X sled had 3100. I had the shocks rebuilt on 2003 it was the best sled for handling I ever had. I have 4 stroke yamaha now could not go back to 2 strokes.

Appreciate the replies. I am going to go look at it again with a few guys that have a little more knowledge than I and we can pick it apart. From what I have heard though sounds like it should fit me well... Anymore info or tips appreciated! Thanks!! Also what does snowmobile insurance average? Allstate?

Insurance

Regarding insurance, Liability is a must and the cost is cheap. See you fathers insurance guy, this is another learning opportunity. Collision/thief insurance on a $900 sled is likely to be foolish. Again ask the insurance guy. This is a cost versus benefit decision. Can you weather the loss of a $900 sled? I will bet yes, your life will go on.
Achieving your dreams, is a measure of having a good life. Today it is only a sled.

Go for it. Looks like a good sled and the track looks to be in good shape. If you can, take a compression tester with you so you can test the cylinders. You can pick up a decent one at a hardware store or napa, autozone. Always try and talk him down more. Like doospunk said, offer $800 and hopefully he will meet you in the middle. Well looked at it again. Found one small crack in plastic in between hood and windshield area. and one small scratch on right side sticker. Other than that still seemed like a good sled. Will be waving 8 hundred dollar bills in her face within the next week, we'll see how it goes!

For insurance, I use Progressive, which is nice because they allow me to drop most of the coverages in the off-season, which keeps the cost down. I don't live anywhere near where I ride, so I only have full coverage for a few weeks a year that way. Your best bet is probably to insure it on your Dad's policy, but if that's not an option, make sure you check a few different providers because the costs can vary quite a bit. I doubt you'll want to add anything beyond liability but that's your call obviously. Maybe it's extremely cheap...

Not going full coverage. I will try getting on my Dad's plan. Is it alright to have any metal shavings in the chaincase oil? On the dipstick?

yes metal shavings on the chaincase dipstick is COMPLETLY normal. It will happen 100 miles after replacing the oil. I don't even have insurance on my 99 xc 700. Call me crazy but I don't think it's that important, but this is a 17 yr olds opinion LOL. I pay next to nothing for liability on my 05 xc sp 500 though.

Well ended up bringing $900 cash and they did not take it. Then two weeks later (now) the woman has her husband talked into $900 so I am probably picking it up tomorrow!! Then I will get it cleaned up and get back with you guys!!

Thanks, I brought her home today! I have one question about a part where there is a blank threaded hole inbetween the spark plugs?? Once I get her cleaned up I will have some final pics! Thanks guys!!

That threaded hole was for a temperature sensor that Polaris never put on the engine. It means nothing and is fine being empty.
