...What type of 'top end' does the Apex pack? My sled is nothing like this one but I'm just curious...

TH

Of course this all depends on conditions. I ride with two guys with Pol 800s. One switch and one dragon. If it is hardpack the Apex ('07 model with no mods) will just go away from them after about 85 mph. The speedo will say 125 so subtract at least 10mph from that. If it is heavy pulling in about 8 inches of unbroken snow the Apex will say about 90 but the Pols will be way behind. One bud of mine got a new Pol Proride 800. He says it tops out at 106 but gets there quickly. From what I have seen since I got my first Yami 4 in 2003 is that there are a lot of sleds by all brands that are plenty quick up to about 100. At that point the Apex will walk away if you have the room. On ice in 2003 with my old RX1 I had my speedo indicating 143. Never gone that fast before or since. The 2011s are supposed to do 120 out of the box. The XTX's are supposed to have longer legs than the shorties but that hasn't been the case so far. However there can't be that many sleds with enough miles on them to be broken in yet. A new Apex will 'wake up' after you get about 1500 miles on it.

first thing I would do with the apex is get rid of dem ski's and replace with a nice set of Simmons. Last night it was darting a bit, not bad but enough to concern me. I've been fortunate to ride a few different machines lately. I have a bud who has a summit 146 600 etec. I gotta admit Thai this machine rocks also. Much lighter sled and comfortable, great handling. My only concern these days for trail riding is the 2 strokes don't hold up to the miles. I mean, last season there was a guy who rode 20k on a yammi and set a record. Odds are that it wont happen on a 2 stroker. I own a 2 stroke now and love it, not bashing them, just saying the new ones are so squeezed for hp that if you get bad gas or have super cold day you may burn her down. It's nice to get great performance out of the 4 strokes with major comfort, turn the key and be confident the motor will not leave you stranded. You really gotta try one and see what I am talking about. Yea,,, there heavy and made in japan but there a high quality, high performance machine and ultra reliable.

2 seasons ago my buddy Mr Freeze bought a 800r doo summit and said if he could get 10K he'd buy another, she burned down and blew the bottom end just before 7 k within 13 weeks. He went out and got the 2010 vector and gonna turn 11K next week. he's replace a few wheels cause of bearing going bad but he plans on 16-17 k before the end of this season.

Sorry for the hi-jack thread, I think highly of the 4 strokes and simply want to share my experience even though I do not own one.

I hit 115mph with only 250 miles on mine. I am guessing after engine break in 120mph.

yamaha has the most inaccurate speedo out there. Snowgoer did a test on it a few years back, the yami was 25 or 26 mph off. just sayin :)

Yep you match any OEM 4s sled to the right type of rider & they are never going back to 2s. Like lenny said no worries about 4s burndowns just gas & go. Agree new injected 2s are very high strung engines never going to make 10,000 20,000 miles like 4s.

Once again the young kid puts foot in mouth. The new Yamaha is about as accurate as you get. 1-2mph off. : )

How about after work and about 7-8pm? I have to eat dinner with the family first and then I will be out. If you can stay out long enough we can do it at 6AM. :)

You aren't suppose to be riding the railroad tracks. You should be packing in the snow on that swamp part of the trail so that it is good for new years.

More than anything or anybody the EPA is the driving force on all of our new engines both 4's and 2's. Before the EPA got involved it was very common for engine designers to pour more fuel than was necessary into nearly all of the two strokers. The big reason for this was to cool things off. Things stayed together a little longer when they were awash in extra fuel. Pol in particular was famous for this. Now they can't do that anymore and some are having teething problems building 'tighter' motors. Now we have FI and DI with pipe sensors and computers and just more stuff to go wrong than we ever had before. It will get worse in 2012 when even stricter EPA rules kick in. 4's are inherently cleaner. Yes, an ETec is super clean but look at all the extra electronics it has to utilize to run that clean. If the slightest thing gets out of whack it will most likely have to taken to a dealer to fix it. So your 2 smoke gets to be just about as backyard-mechanic unfriendly as a Yami 4. Different strokes for different folks but the times they are a changing. Indy is correct in that some Yami speedos read high. And yes , they are supposed to be better for 2011. I do know two things. #1 - when you get going so fast that you can't hear the engine or track noise you are going fast. #2 - maybe you are not going 130 or 140 or whatever but when you do slow down it takes a minute or two for your buds to catch up.

Grub got to laugh when people ask how fast were you riding? Heck I don't know all speedos BS with track spin & I'm going too fast to look at speedo anyway & things are happening quickly. Usually say don't know as fast as it would go today.lol :)
