FYI, New 2018 Crew Z71's hit mega deal status today, 30% off all left in stock in Green Bay at Gandrud. That means you can get one if you finance with GM for as low as 33.5k. RUN RUN RUN, dont but used junk!
Refi at your credit union 30 days after for a lower rate, booyah.

Bear

Bear is right if I was you I'd go for that deal. Nothing like warranty!

I have a 2017 GMC Sierra Crew Cab Denali 4wd with 6.2L engine and 8-sp transmission and every option. Was a left over so I saved over $12,000 off list price. 20,000 miles and no problems. Had a 2015 same truck and in 60,000 miles it never used any oil. Bought a new one because I could.

2014 was the 1st year for that new body style GMC. The engines are newer design and do not compare with the older models (e.g. no oil usage problems). I would never buy any vehicle in the first year of the new mode run, too many bugs not worked out. One thing I did not like about my 2015 GMC was the headlights, they were terrible at night IMO. It never used any oil though.

Friend bought a used Tundra (not sure of year), very good condition but he has been grumbling about the lousy mileage (<14) every since and is looking for something else.

Any used vehicle is a risk, especially with over 100,000 miles. Too many miles, IMO don't buy either one.

Tons of truth on this site, I haven't seen one falsehood anywhere.
My advice;
-The 5.3 with AFM (even in a 2018) is intolerable driving without a tune from Hypertech to eliminate the AFM. I buy new trucks every year and departed GM in 2016 as the 5.3 is sickening to drive even with a tune, low torque.
-Yes, towing MPG is horrible with all gas engines period. Expect 9-11. Even the Eco V-6's from ford are bad while towing, maybe worse than a V-8 in my experience. FYI, these are old trucks and both are bad at MPG but the Yo is much worse but has more power.
-Buy new if you can. Paying $18k for a 140k mileage truck is a rip-off and trouble for sure; ball joints, Pitman with all suspension parts etc., tranny (not that kind) etc. A new 50k MSRP crew truck is only 35-37k if you look diligently and don't mind a new leftover. Remember, buying a vehicle is not only about price up-front but cost per mile between day one purchase and the day you sell it (the true cost).
-No ridicule intended here but if you believe there may be a timing belt In a GM truck, I assume you will not be working one the vehicle. It has a simple chain and gears and has been around since the mid-50's.

Sincerely, Bear

Some of the only useful information I've seen on this thread so far... delete active fuel managment via a tuner and enjoy, 14 newer 5.3s are reliable and powerful. Not the BEST towing motor but a very good every day motor for the average joe for commuting. I am a ford guy now, and absolutely love my ecoboosts... Your not asking about them so i wont be that guy to ramble about them... i would NOT get a Tundra simply because of gas mileage. They get 14 at best, 12 is normal. 2.7, 3.5 ecoboosts, and 5.0 fords, and 5.3, and 6.2 chevys ALL get 5 more mpgs than a Tundra...

Yeah - mine was an '11. The rust wasn't bad enough to warrant a recall. Traded it in on a Ford. Don't think I'm misinformed. Zimmer asked for any input. I offered input to look at the frame.

BTW - all trucks are money pits, like sleds, boats, or anything else.

320k..2 trannys and a radiator and proper maintenece..dont see the problem 1500 chev5.3..best motor made
