Went for a ride down the river today and locked her up. Temp light came on. Thought it was just from running on the hard park, so I moved over into fresh snow expecting the temp to come down. Never happened. Made it about a 100 yards or so and she locked up tight! found the rear heat exchanger ice cold. First thought was stuck thermostat or lost the water pump. Tore it down and found the motor bone dry. Not a drop of oil anywhere. So now I'm thinking I lost the water pump and oil pump at the same time. It appears they are driven off a common shaft, but the parts diagram is kind of vague on the water pump side. Can anyone confirm they are driven off the same shaft? Anyone else seen problems with the shaft or drive gear?

Yeah, blowing up close to home is better than towing it out of the bush any day! Gota look at the positives, lol. Thing is I'm supposed to be out west in three weeks. The timing couldn't be worse.Just another day in the life of a snowmobiler I guess?

Got the motor out of the chassis today. Having trouble getting the flywheel off. Tried heat, smacking the puller bolt, all the usual stuff. Can't get it to pop free. Anybody got any ideas/tricks?

I would make a few calls for a new long block to see what is the cheapest fastest way to go.
Michelle at Oregon trail sports.
Rv sports in thief river
country cat
or racin station they may have a rebuilt or low mi used .
after that and the point u are at could be even money and faster to go long block then u have a few parts to sell and make some $$back

sometimes leaving the puller on and tighten it the most you can sometimes with the constant pressure on it'll pop off my itself. I've had some hard to get off then leave them over night and came out in the morning and it'll be off. If it don't rap it with a hammer alittle more and tighten more if you can and leave it longer.

Thing is, I think I can save the jugs. Looks like mostly just aluminum transfer, not actually scored. I wont know for sure till I try cleaning them up with some muriatic acid, but if I can save them its nothing more than a set of pistons as far as the top end goes. The million dollar question is, why did the shaft lock up, and did it trash the crank or case when it did so? I won't be able to tell that till I get this damn flywheel off and open up the cases.

UPDATE: lol!
I just went back out to the garage after eating dinner and leaving the puller with tension on it. Son of a gun if that ***** wasn't busted free!! Lol!

well do u know a good crank guy? I have a great guy who is cheep but it is a long drive from il
If I locked one up from lack of oil I could not ride with any piece of mind with out having the crank redone.
make a few calls and get some numbers . if to high or to long
shoot me a pm I can get some numbers from my guy who I highly recommend . all the dealers in my area sneak there crank work over to him in the dark of night.

Thanks ezra. I have a similar set up with a crank guy by me that all the dealers use under the radar. He does awesome work and has great prices but he is popular because of it. The time thing is going to be the problem. I'm betting he is plenty backed up right about now!

Give me a call if you need a machine shop. We bring all of our company stuff to Muck,in franklin park for work stuff. There is a HD drag shop in Crestwood that I have used this time of year for sled stuff. Let me know........

That sure looks like a poor design that is a problem going to happen.

Rebuild it and dump it....or buy another and then fix this when timing is better then dump it.

I hate to say it but just another reason to go with a good 4 stroke.
oh yeah a 4 st would have been better in this situation give me a break so if a gear driven pump locks up in a freak situation how would a 4 st be better off than a 2?. the gear is brass thinking ahead just in case something locks up or gets wedged it wont take out the whole crank just a gear.

Thanks for the help guys. Cat wants almost $400 dollars for that stupid shaft and gear. By the time I add machine work and rebuild the top end, I'm not sure its even worth it. I might just be better off going with a complete long block. Still looking into possibly finding a used case/crank with good parts?

On the plus side, I got to spend 15.2 hrs working outside in -40 windchills today. That was fun! I should be around a 3rd of the way paying for this now. Lol
