ATF fluid in the chain case ??

I read a chat in a doo talk thread and several people suggested ATF in the chain case. I was about to drain, clean and refill my chain case so I decided I would try this. I assumed if it canhold up in a tranny it should work in a chain case. Now that its cleaned out, the chain is properly tightened and case is filled with ATF Im second guessing my choice. Does anyone have any thoughts on using ATF fluid in the chain case ? I have a 2006 REV 500 SS

This has been discussed on here a few times and if my memory is right, many people have done it with no issues. Personally, I use nothing but synthetic chain case oil. How much do you really save anyway and what reasons did they give on Dootalk to even try it? Just curious.

The chain case oil debate. You can use what every oil you want its your sled.I am sure there are people that use ATF in there chain case but I would not use it. A quart of chain case oil is about $15.00 and it should service your case twice. If that is too much money then you could just put a grease fitting in the chain case and give it a couple of pumps after every ride.

My reasoning for using ATF is that when it is cold out the ATF will effectively lube more of the case because it is lighter weight. ATF is all that I run and I don't do it because of cost I just do it because I was shown that it will actually get into areas to lube them that gear lube wont because it is too heavy of an oil. Everyone has their own opinion on what is best and why but this is my opinion and reasoning on why i have the opinion. Another thing to think about is why do they switch the fluid in a manual car from gear case lube to ATF when the car has a hard time shifting or is making a noise.

I had a hard time keeping it from leaking so i went back to gear lube.

Where was yours leaking from I have not had a problem with mine and that is all that we run in our machines. We did have one machine leak out but that was due to a recall issue on the chain case on the early iq chasis where the plastic cover would warp because of the heat from the exhaust and the fix for it was a new cover with a metal brace that then goes over the cover.

Mine comes out the very bottom thru the seam between the cover and case. Not a biggie though as the gear lube works good enough.

Polaris "SCL" (synthetic chain case lube) works great in my Polaris and 'doo sleds. I used to run Amsoil synthetic chaincase oil until I came across the SCL, works just as good and much cheaper. I buy 1 qt bottles for $13.99 at my Polaris dealer and it is enough for all 3 of my sleds. It is not as "tacky" as Amsoil, so it flows much better, but still sticks to the gears just as good.

To each their own...if you found something that works without problems, keep using it!

Bring on the snow!!!!

Synthetic gear oil is what the factory uses, sure they call it chaincase lube but it's a GL rated lube. ATF is really designed for gear systems with a constant bath or a pump for lubrication.

Just thinking out load here, but ATF is equal to 10w oil in viscosity. Most gear lubes are 75w and higher. I am thinking with ATF would help with top end on the chain and Diamond drives. Hmm, might have to switch to ATF in the Diamond drives this weekend. I currently run a synthetic (mobil SHC 634) which is good to -30F, but still heavier than ATF

how many miles do you guys drain and change it? I usually don't go over 500 miles before I change.
