ATF fluid in the chain case ??

Wayne all that you are lubing on a standard chain case is the chain because there is two sealed bearings. ATF will get into the rollers on the chain easier than the gear case lube which in turn causes the chain to be better lubed. The oil seals on the case are to keep the oil in and the bearing uses no lube.

My 01, 02 and 03 Poos had one side of bearing without a seal. One was intended to be greased by the speedo cable zert, the chain case bearing was intended to be lubed by the chaincase oil. My 05 Edge switchback had sealed bearings. common mistake for folks changing the sealed one side bearing was that they would replace them facing the wrong direction and bearing failure became rampent. With the chaincase sealed bearing oil can still penetrate the bearing were as the greased side could not. Grease being much thicker than oil. My concern is a detergent oil or say ATF may actually react with the bearing seal or clean the grease out of the sealed bearing itself. If anything goes in the chaincase then why change oil ever? the plug magnets catch the metal shavings??? and wet is wet no matter what the color or consistency of the oil for the chain as many say?

Unfricken believable how some of you people try try to reengineer the chain case fluid/oil capabilities to possibly save a few bucks and risk costing a thousand. Engineers designed chain cases and oil compatabilities for a reason. For the cost of a quart of mfg recommended chain case oil???? ***?? W.T.F.?
all I can tell u is I know some factory backed world record racers who have been using syn ATF for yrs and yrs.these same guys can get all the factory oils they want for free. they use syn ATF if it is good enough for them it will work just fine for me and has

I think we should end this thread by saying whether you use gear lube, chaincase oil, or ATF you won't hurt anything. Just make sure its clean and you have the recommended amount. Personally I've used all 3 (whatever i have in the garage) and haven't noticed a difference because frankly its just a chain and 2 gears.

do any of you own a 4x4 truck? do any of you know what the transfer case has inside of it? mesh chain and gears and seals on either end of the case. No oilpump to push fluid through it, just bath lubrication ....HUH? just like a chain case on a sled. what kind of fluid do yo put in a transfer case?............ ATF? huh.

And an auto transmission has messing gears, just like a diamond drive.
ATF has AW additives and gear oil has EP additives.

This whole time I've been using bacon grease. It smells really good, but hard to get down the funnel .But serious ,never gave ATF much thought. After reading all of these post, I may give it a try. The diamond drive,we'll that's a whole nother subject. I may stick with organic bacon grease for that sled.

Make sure the colesterol level is high enough to get adhesion.

There is always the survival benefit to using organic...in a pinch you can drain it and fry up something you can catch when you get stuck in the wild.

The seals on your roller bearings are the same as the bogie wheels. When I service my skid, I press the bearings out of the plastic bogies. I then gently pry both seals out of the roller bearing. I have soaked/cleaned them with ATF or Engine oil before repacking the bearings and re-installing the seals, never had a problem. But one time i decided to clean the seals with gasoline.... It swelled the rubber seals and ruined them!
I believe moisture is the culprit for most bearing failures. So change it at the end of every season!:)

I had rp7x change my tranny fluid and filter today, and we figured if you could run ATF in the chaincase, we would try Synthetic Chaincase Lube in my tranny. It got very expensive! ;)

If you're serious ?

I hope you have a manual transmission.

I don't think the clutches in an automatic trans are going to like that synthetic lube

Here's a big correction for you, there are 2 types of transfercases gear to gear, and chain. Gear to gear cases like the NP205 and Dana 300 run gear oil in the case and have no oil pump. Every chain driven case I have ever taken apart has had an oil pump in it and runs ATF.

I hope it snows everywhere soon. Soon there will be a thread started concerning proper torque values on spindle bolts.

Mspease,I hope you got decals with that fluid change. The back of your rig tells everything .If they don't give decals, than the stuff can't be good. You need the back of you rig to look like a rolling billboard ,before you can be taken serious .
