Bayfield/Valhalla

Trails in the Bayfield/Valhalla area are superb. Groomers have done a very good job getting them in excellent condition after the rain and warm weather last weekend. The exception is TR1 west of Bayfield to TR51, the usual crap going into Bayfield on TR31, TR 1 into Herbster and TR1 from Cornie to TR41. Rode 310 miles the past two days and about 75% on groomed trails and the other of FR's. Saw about 20 sleds Thursday and less than a dozen today.

Many FR's are very hard but there is still some very good riding on certain FR's. and it helps to know which ones to ride and those to say nada. We found some old logging roads with a few inches of snow which was fun. Scratchers are not necessary.

We will be riding again Saturday and Sunday with our cottage guests www.woodsidecottages.com

No sugar. No moguls and very little traffic. Just solid, fast and smooth trails with a very good base.

Woodside, do you have a quick report tonight if you have any new info? Looking at making a day trip up Tuesday morning if things held up from yesterday. 60 down here in EC...ugh. Thanks!

50 here and sun yesterday but we still put on 155 miles. The groomer should have most trails back in good the very good condition. I am concerned about TR31S towards Iron River, TR1 between Cornie. TR1 west of Bayfield will not be groomed. The low spots on TR51 will be icy and thin. Expect the trails to be fair to very good. IMG_3835[1].jpg IMG_3834[1].jpg

There is plenty of snow on the FR's but some are rough and hard. Most FR's north of TR40 are the best.

The groomer was putting more studs on the rubber track yesterday to get ready for the steeper inclines. Snowing very hard right now but we are only supposed to get an inch which will help.

Will be riding again today although the conditions will be hard. Scratchers will be needed.

85 miles today and we called it quits early afternoon as our guests had to head home. We saw two riders during our 3.5 hour ride. 3" of fresh wet snow made the FR's a lot softer and will help the groomer rehab some of the heavier traveled trails like 31S and others south of Valhalla. We rode around 650 miles with our cottage guests starting Wednesday and they all had a great time and hope to get back up here once again this Winter. No question that the Bayfield area has the best riding any place in Wisconsin which is usually the case.

The trails west of Bayfield and in the Valhalla area to the west should be excellent after one pass by the groomer. I'm talking about north of trail 40 except TR1 west of Bayfield and south of Cornie. I expect less than that south of Valhalla towards Iron River due to more riders and less snow. The area forecast calls for 1-3" yet tonight.

Here are some pics of today's ride. No sugar, moguls and very few riders. You decide. Give us a call 715-779-5600 or www.woodsidecottages.com

Had a fantastic time here @ woodside. We did approx 75 miles fri night, 140-150 on sat in a hoody & bibs, no gloves, no goggels. What a absoulute riot. Sorry we did not ride with gary & his guests, due to we had a buddy with us who was out for his first time in 10 yrs, & did not want to hold anyone up. Fantastic food @ pub & grub. Gary, I hope to ride with you in the (near future) & gain some more knowledge of the area. Thanks again for the spotless cottage, & warm fireplace. Nxt time ill do the jacuzzi cottage!

Glad you guys found your way around and had a great time. Now that you know the way, we look forward to your return and a ride with you.

Saw your post about riding out of Beaver Creek Lodge in NE Utah. Great place and we have been there the past two years and look forward to going back next January. Viv and Gerald are outstanding cooks and people and Brian runs a great operation.

Forgot to ask you, what was goin on sat. Night with all the sirens going 10mph down hwy 13? Sounded like a parade.

Gary is absolutely right. I hit the road at the butt crack of dawn this morning for what was likely my last ride for the season. Skipped Iron River and trailered straight to P&G. Rode 120 miles on absolutely perfect trails and headed back home. They were hard and fast but we had no cooling issues at all (no scratchers). Only section that was a little rough was TR40 west of P&G to Old Baldy, just needs a groomer pass - plenty of snow. The base here is still plenty deep - we encountered no bare spots anywhere. Saw 2 other riders at the bar for lunch and never passed a single sled all day. 31, 19, 1, 51, 43, 66, 3....all these trails were fresh ribbon and good to go (except the section of TR1 that Woodside mentioned, which we avoided). Thanks for the honest report Gary, glad we made the trip up. Guys, load and go...get it while its good. Looking at the forecast, looks like you got about a week.

Good report polarisman_98. TR40 & TR41 will be groomed today so the system west and north of Valhalla towards Bayfied and Cornie will be prime!! And many of the forest roads are still in good to very good shape with a very solid and deep base. A few bumps here and there, but what the heck, thats what makes them fun!!

The groomer may try to hit TR1 yet this week but there are still potential problems along that route.

The area could get 3" of so Friday into Saturday morning.

Was going to head up that way tomorrow after picking up sleds in St Germain. Was thinking of parking near Ashland and ride. Anyone know where we can park? Or perhaps a better location/town?
Will need lodging that night as well. Never been over that way before so any info would be helpful.

You can park in Ashland at the Cenex (Midland) gas station right along the corridor. West of Ashland the corridor is covered and within 15 miles you will be up north in the good stuff

It seems as if I keep on posting the same report! Trails west of Bayfield and Valhalla were absolutely fantastic today. TR40, 41, 19, 31N, 51 and 1 were all freshly groomed and smooth, hard and fast. There are a few icy spots in the low areas of TR51. Rode 153 miles with our cottages guests. TR! west of Bayfield was finally groomed today so its in good condition and has a good base. There is a 150 yd stretch of logging the east side of Stage Rd on TR1.Some of the forest roads still offer great riding but expect a variety of conditions. They are hard and 2-3" of fresh snow would be very welcome. The last pic was taken off an old logging road. IMG_3878.jpg IMG_3880.jpg IMG_3876.jpg IMG_3881.jpg

Was wondering all the Forest roads are holding up up there? I just need rideable not perfect. I'm not making a special trip and I'm only going to ride around for couple hours. Mainly just want a place for my boys to ride because they didn't get to hit the trail at all because of basketball and other conflicts. Any advice of where we could drop and ride would be greatly appreciated. Will be coming from the East on Highway 2.
