Be safe and look both ways

I just wanted to share a pic of a incident that happened a few years back. The gentleman didn't look when crossing the road and the pic shows the result. This happened at 10 am and no liquor was involved. He just failed to keep his situational awareness. The gentleman was of age and did pass.

I was at Headwaters Polaris when that happened. Strange feeling that day. Alot of riders who saw came in to the store afterwards. Alot of somber faces. We decided not to go that way and just head back to Sidnaw. That was a long ride.

Bear and I were managing the Gateway Lodge in Lando then and he was one of our guests...a day I'll never forget.

Someone that came into the store said he was 70 years old and rode around 10,000 per season. Even if that's not accurate, it's a perfect example for all of us to be cautious and ALWAYS be aware of our surroundings!

Look Both Ways

That accident was just awful but, unfortunately, avoidable.

I want to share a scary one that happened to me last week, somewhat on this subject. Something that has never happened to me in 25 years of riding.

I was heading north on the Bill Nichols Trail riding from Twin Lakes to Toivola for breakfast at about 10:30 AM. A couple miles north of TL a sled jumped out of the woods on my left onto the trail, probably no more than 100 ft in front of me. I was able to slow down a bit and slid right around him, missing him by an inch or two. You all know how fast 100' can go by on that trail.

There was no clearing, no intersection, nothing that would possibly lead you to watch out for cross traffic. I have mulled this over a thousand times to try to think about what I could have done to avoid this and there isn't one, other than keeping my speed to 20 mph or so. I didn't see movement or anything...no warning. Both he and I were awfully lucky the timing wasn't a split second different.

I know that it's a blast to boondock out there, but for goodness sake, look both ways before jumping out on a trail.

We saw the truck being towed into Watersmeet as we were heading home that day. Very sad. :(

I remember this one clearly. We were headed back to Lando and came across this shortly after it happened and was not long after we heard what actually happened. A very sad day for sure.

Yes He was 70 yrs old. I spoke to his brother at the scene and He said that he just never stopped at the stop sign. It was 10 am in the morning .His mind must have been some place else.

Oh he stopped he just looked one way and not the other and then pulled out. He was a very experienced rider just made a simple mistake and didn't look both ways. He died doing what he loved the most, that was the only comforting thought for the family.

No details yet, but I heard on the police scanner that we had a snowmobile versus truck accident in the town of Oregon just south of Madison yesterday. Somewhere around 4:30 PM. The last I heard was that the University hospital med flight was on stand-by. Battery pack died on the scanner and nothing in the news paper this morning. More to come as things develop. Let's be careful out there - please.

I didn't know of this accident, but I do know the scene very well. I'll use this as a positive tool to teach my son safe sledding, everytime we pass through this intersection.

Such a sad story. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. At least he passed doing something that he loved. Everybody ride safe this season!
