Cat telescoping handlebars

Disappointing news, I cannot use this on my sled without some serious modification to the steering post. There is apparently a positioning issue with the base of the post which puts a canter in the steering post fully mounted. A slightly different mounting set up at the bottom of the 06 which would require using the bottom portion of the stock post in order for it to mount straight. I don't believe this would be an issue on the 07, but, I cannot be sure. I am bummed! Everything looked like it was falling into place then the big curve ball, oh well, someone had to find out, just wish it didn't have to be me.-Mezz

Just got back from the shop, the new steering post has a slight bend in it toward the bottom. It must be offset to get the proper clearance in the newer sleds. The only way I could use this particular set up would be to cut the post just above the bend & weld a section from the lower post of the original to it to make it a straight shot. The guy's told me they didn't want to experiment with that on my sled, but, may try it on theirs. If all goes well with that, I just may have them fabricate that for me as well. Thanks for the info cuzzinolaf, I have to say I really like the ease of the adjustment on the Cat set-up. There may be hope yet, just have to wait & see.-Mezz

looking at the www.fabcraft.com/steering-arctic.php?sled=13 you can see the 07 and up have a dif bottem mount and the bend is just above the arm conector thay have 2 laying side by side about mid page.looks like a guy would have to weld old and new lust above arm mount.I know welding usualy works but 1 time I was left holding my bars in my hand held to sled by just cables .not a good fealing as you go to pull the sled over to avoid a tree and the bars come off

ezra, as stated in my last post, that is precisely what we discussed. I paid the guy's a visit at the shop today to brainstorm a bit more on this & that is precisely what they did to their sled. What they did was cut it off just above the bend on the new post & removed the a length from the original post. A piece of heavy tubing (heavier than the post itself) was ground to fit & inserted into each piece of the post & each were welded to the insert. The slight gap remaining between the weld on the insert was then filled with weld, ground, painted & installed, WaLa! All clearances with exhaust & fuel tank are good to go, so, no other modification needed. A simple retro fit of the control caps will be the extent of it. All wiring, cable & brake line fit the travel. Ordered the parts (again)today, I am going forward with it. Bummer it won't be for this season, unless of course we get a late March early April pummeling, but I will have what I was looking for. I will still hope for that pummeling though! May have to start paging Meester Bleezard & Co.!-Mezz

The parts will be in this week. I will try to remember to get pic's showing the measurements before & after install, including differences in the adjustment travel on the new steering post. This addition as well the 1.6 Mtn Paddle & the Parabolic Ski's, will be a definite improvement & will really add to the versatility of this Crossover, not to mention easier on the lower back, can't wait.-Mezz

sabercat, that is what is being done now. I have pic's of the process, but I want to wait until it's done & post them all together. The post is completed & installed, I am currently waiting on the new handle bars which should be in this afternoon. The guy's did a real nice job on this & went out of their way for me. A BIG Kudos to Mark & Bill at Kiilunen Repair Works in Lake Linden. I will post an update as soon as I can.-Mezz

Well, I have to say, this was worth the wait. Here are some pic's of the conversion beginning with what this looked like with the original post & bars. You will note the handle bar height from running board toe hold to bottom of bar at 34" which includes the 1" riser.

The next pic is of the new steering post which has been cut. The lower section (bottom of pic) was then fitted with a heavier tube insert.

107965.jpg

The three pieces were then welded together around the complete circumference, then a gusset plate was added to the face of the post.

107966.jpg

The following pic will show the new post & bars in the lowest position measuring 32-1/2".

107967.jpg

The next is in the highest position measuring
36-1/2".

The 4" of adjust-ability is phenomenal & it can be done on the fly as well. The remaining pic's are of the finished look. In light of the fact that the original throttle & brake controls were used, the original control covers were cut to fit the bars to give it a nice finished look.

I did get to use it on Saturday for a while putting it through a decent 42 mile bush ride. I can say this, I will not have another sled without this set-up! Again, a big thanks to Mark & Bill at Kiilunen's Repair for their quality work & also to Chad at M&M Powersports who had a throttle cable for me late Friday.-Mezz

I should add for those who don't know this already, the adjustments shown above are just the lowest & highest setting. The bars do lock in between the 2 settings to where you feel comfortable in either the standing or seated position. I felt it would be redundant to take a picture for each height adjustment. This feature will be a must have for me from here on in.-Mezz

hay mezz did you need the cable to be longer or just need a new cable ?and was your brake line good withno probs in tight turns?I was going to move lower mount but sed f it I droped both posts of at welders with all layout marks to mutch messen around other way.I was thinking about getting new brake line the 09sp is alot longer and thay put a loop in it mid bar. and I cant tell buy looking at sled but throttle cable just disapers behind alloy plate I bet it may have some kind of loop also.I like the clean look of the sp wirring behind the riser plate.also in my parts removal I found my bikeman can had burnt the insulation flex cover on a harness behind can.just a reminder to keep the full insurance coverage on the sleds.also pulling jugs this week thay need more than just a trail port open up those transfers
