Cat telescoping handlebars

ezra, I did not need a longer cable, I just needed to replace the one I had. When we did the change over, a split was discovered in the throttle cable casing which was causing it to hang up on return every so often. This was re-routed to avoid that from happening again. Expensive little bugger too! Routed it up the left side of the sled (like on the M). The brake line & wiring harness were no problem either. Remember, you will need the new style M handle bars for all of this to reach properly.-Mezz

well I don't know how you guys got the extra wire.I tried all the diff routs including moving main harness on top of coolant line next to bottle.moving all wire's to right side of post.well none would get me to the full ext of the post with full free movement.so tonight I guess I am going to have to start cutting splicing soldering and shrink wrapping.

ezra, did you change the handle bars to the new-09 style M handle bars? If not, you will definetly be short on the travel. The x-fire bars are too tall to reach everything with the new post. The x-fire throttle cable is actually longer than the M's, likewise with the wire harness & brake line, so you should have more than enough play if you change the handle bars.-Mezz

ezra, another thought occurred to me regarding your dilemma. I was thinking that if you did change the handle bars to the 09 M style, I would have to ask if your boy's welded the post to the same length as the original? What is the measurement from the bottom of the foothold to the bottom of the handle bars with the new post & bars in the lowest position? They should be around 32 1/2" to the bottom of the handle bar (check out my previous pic's). If not, I would safely say the post is a tad too long. Rest assured, I'm not the B.S ing kind, I did not have to change or extend anything, just a bit of re-routing & that was it. Keep us up-dated.-Mezz

yeah I did buy the 09 bars.and I am sure the lower section of post is the same because of how you mount the post if it was to long the upper mount would not work because of the collar on the post that sits below the upper mount.I did solder and shrink wrap the ground on muffler side tonight.and 1 of the warmer cables well actually 3 but 1 cable.she is getting Thar.on another note I put on my graphics kit this weekend looks sweet I used the www.blownconcepts.com pin up girl in green almost more stoked about them than bars.almost

1 more thought I know the EB crossfires used some m parts like rear cooler wiring ect.I don't have a EB but my bud has A EB with the small cooler and diff helix and weights his was built less than 30 days before my sled maybe I have a M harness.cant say looks the same as yours from what I can see but maybe it is a M and maybe M was shorter.oh well I enjoy tinkering almost as much as breaking I mean riding them

ezra, I hadn't thought about the upper mount not matching up if the post were a tad long, good observation. They obviously did use a different harness which I am sure the only difference between the two would be their length. My sled & my dealers sled converted with no problems. You will have to post a pic of the new graphics. Hope all goes well with finishing the conversion. I know you will like it.-Mezz

OK all wire soldered and shrink wrapped bolts tight done deal.prob got over 10 hr in to the project.I can pull the motor split the case install a new crank and top end in less time than the bars took me.but it was fun and gave me zen time in the shop that is all that counts.on to cleaning power valves and DD oil change hit all Zerk's.then I am ready to just sit on it and look out the garage door and Waite for snow OH GOD MAKE IT SNOW SOON I can hardly take it

I hope the "Zen time" was worth it for you. I probably would have taken a short-cut & picked up or traded the harness for a longer one. I know you can't really try it out right now, but, what do you think of the adjustability? It won't be too long & you will get to give it a work out. Glad to hear you got it done.-Mezz

got the bars on, look great. instead of cutting and changing out the lower half of the shaft. i moved the mounting bracket on the bottom to the left . i measured a new crossfire 800 at 7 inches from the edge of the bulkhead to the center of the steering shaft. redrilled the holes and bolted it up. all the wires and cables were long enough, but barley.

did you add some extra flat alloy to the top of bulk head? I saw the newer ones had 2 layer of alloy further out than the 06 so the bracket would be more stable I guess.I was going to go that rout and went with cut and weld.if any one is going the move the mount rout send me a self addressed envelope and I will give you the new post mount I bought and now will sit in the shop for the next 10yrs unless some one needs it

i did not add any metal, i figured that cat thought the first was ok that moving it over would be ok also. i dont think that this is a high stress area either.but i could be wrong also, time will tell.
