Looks like you are new here, but if you do a search, you'll find every opinion there is. Some follow the factory instructions and some just pee in there.

Seems to me a lot of questions and risk just for 1/2 a quart of oil. Just buy the OEM Stock oil and be done with it. Sure, you can save $.97 an oil change, but really, is it worth that?

I use either Amsoil synthetic chaincase oil (7 or 8 bucks for a 12 oz. bottle, much less than OEM) or the 75-90 synthetic gear oil that my truck uses in its differential (because I always have it on hand, and if it's good enough for a differential I would think that it's more than good enough for a chaincase). I'm sure there are plenty of other options that work, and have worked for other people, too.

yeah it is worth it it is a chain with 2 sealed bearings.what kind of oil is your motorcycle/atv/dirt bike flowing through NONE some spray if lucky and you get what 12k mi or more on them.
not that it matters in trail sleds but in race sleds drag sleds want the lowest viscosity they can get for low friction/drag lots use ATF

atv chains as well as the other formentioned have oring in them. the drive chain in the sled is a multi-link chain pron to eccessive wear. I say the better the oil to prevent damage and prolong life the better. I personally use oem. change it every year, comes out to be about 4 dollars a year.

Just purchased a quart of Poo chain oil $16, like others have said use good oil and you should be ok. I also will change my every spring, that way you get to see whats going on inside and clean things out. like jeff said its about $4 per change, I'll do it for that price.

Why do you need to change your oil so often, I only change mine at the end of the season in case of any moisture, but its a sealed system and should not be getting contaminated unless you sink it.

i use mobil 1 5 w 30 or 10 w 30 what ever i have laying around. i change it twice a year. i've put on over 20k miles on 4 diff sleds no problems(10k on one sled)

I wasn't saying you shouldn't change the oil. My point was, if the Manufacturer offers a branded chain case oil, that is essentially only a $1 more per change, (which perhaps by what else has been said here, perhaps you guys are buying more expensive oil to have better protection), then why not just buy the Manufacturer's product, support them, and know that their engineers agree this product works. Why argue about if this oil or that oil is better or what to use, when for a buck more, you can get something that is proven to be appropriate. Reminiscent of the 'best 2 cycle oil' threads???
