Not an exciting ride but considering early season I wanted a real time report for Snowtracks so I just zigzagged the Conover system. Tuesdays are typically the deadest here with limited food stops open.

As promised I am got out this morning & rode 47 miles. Traffic was non existent (2 deer & 0 sleds). My route was from town 45S to 13N running the “D loop”. Then 13N into Land O system to 6 & turned around. Followed 45N to 8E/8W intersection. At this intersection (#718), the center fork is 8E but somehow is labeled 8W. The brown signs are correct. I’ll try to get this sign corrected soon. Ran 8E to the power lines and the Land O/Phelps intersection & back. Then rode the grade east to Twin Haven via the new trail; Trail is nice except for the last 3/4 mile where it turns off the grade. This last section must be ridden slowly. Returned to town via 3 into the park.

I’m rating the trails overall as fair. Some areas were good but I want to be conservative. There were no wet spots but a few rocks & logs sticking thru and periodic snirt areas. Lakes are not marked yet, stay off until they are marked.

Thanks for the report Venturenorth. You and WD let me know how things shape up into Dec. 25th, as I'll be on those trails early 12/26 for maiden voyage of Pro-S 800 (hers) - with wife in tow.
Not sure I have a tow rope long enough for her, be we'll get by! Say a prayer - LOL!

Jim, think WD will be parked for the holidays, has family in town..
I will be home and riding if possible...let me know if you wanna meet for a local loop

We received about 2″ of wet snow yesterday & groomers were out last night. Trails today are still conservatively rated fair with some good areas mixed in. There is a chance of light snow tomorrow then Sunday/Monday looks questionable. Let’s hope we stay on the cold side of the question. At intersection #718 (45 & 8E/8W), the center fork is 8E but somehow is labeled 8W. The brown signs are correct. I’ll try to get this sign corrected soon.

Twin Haven via the new trail; Trail is nice except for the last 3/4 mile where it turns off the grade. This section must be ridden slowly. For those running along the power lines N from North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

Lakes are not marked yet, stay off until they are marked.

finally got home for Christmas......got your text and tried to call you back......it was ironic that you were over by Ben....Ben's buddy Chad from M&M said I was supposed to say hi to him. I'll call you next week

From last evening's ride:

We received about 1+″ of wet snow this afternoon & evening. Both groomers are out tonight. Trails today are still conservatively rated fair with some good areas mixed in. Sunday/Monday forecast looks questionable. Let’s hope we stay on the cold side of the question. The incorrect sign at intersection #718 (45 & 8E/8W) has been corrected.

Expect most all businesses to close early Saturday night & be closed Sunday. If you are out riding during that timeframe be sure you have enough fuel & carry snacks/ water.

All day Sunday was overcast, below freezing & no precip. Then we received about 1/2 of wet snow & sleet in the evening. Trees were snow covered & pretty. We actually increased our snow cover a bit by 9PM & I was thinking the groomers would be able to lay down a nice flat trail. Sometime after I went to bed it warmed and rained & this morning, trees are bare & we had lost some snow cover. Temps are above freezing as I type. Lakes have brown slush as visible from shore & creeks are running as visible from the roads. It is forecast to cool down & the trails should harden back up. Expect trails to be fair with some poor & wet areas.

Temps fell below freezing by yesterday afternoon & stayed below all day today. The groomers were out last night & really had things smooth & firmed up this morning. We had a dusting to maybe 1/4″ new snow today.

I took a quick 77 mile loop to BJ via 8W, 15N, 6E & 13S. Traffic was light near Conover & significantly higher to the west. Conover trails 8 & 13 were actually good but I am keeping my report conservatively at FAIR because I only rode corridor trails & not every trail got groomed last night.

Twin Haven via the new trail; Trail is nice except for the last 3/4 mile where it turns off the grade. This section must be ridden slowly. For those running along the power lines N from North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

As far as I know the lakes are not marked yet, stay off until they are marked.

Jim,
same here yesterday, ..70 mi ... rode basically the same... up 7N to 8w to BJ and then a little on 6W towards Lando and back down 13. to 8W Sayner...traffic picked up in late afternoon ....overall groomed good ..... a fair-good ride....will wait for the poss weekend snow .....and traffic to slow down......thks for getting out there and reporting......

Jim, can you clarify about the "new" Twin Haven trail? ......

same as last year,? isn't it at the end of the grade, then turn right, and then left on the spur off the power lines ?

I usually go that way to cross N Twin from Grapes over to Phelps Gas.....and today, according to Phelps club, N Twin is marked .

Ken,

The newest maps have the new routing. You will take the grade east past the power lines (where you used to turn south) for a few miles then turn right off the grade for a 3/4 mile twisty to Twin Haven. The reroute was made because of heavy blow down in the July storm & the trail will eventually go this way anyway when the next segment of the bike path is done (& that looks like next summer).

Conover report for 12-29:
The groomers were out last night & really had things smooth & firmed up this morning. We had a dusting to maybe 1″ of new snow today. 1-3″ forecast for Friday.

Trails that I could see along HWY 45 looked good this morning. As a matter if fact, the grade north of Log Cabin had not been ridden since being groomed last night as of 8:45 today.

Twin Haven via the new trail; Trail is nice except for the last 3/4 mile where it turns off the grade. This section must be ridden slowly. For those running along the power lines N from North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

Pioneer Lake was marked yesterday, Buckatabon today & North Twin was marked yesterday. Expect rough lake travel with minimal snow cover, glare ice, slush & frozen ruts. If you travel the lakes, go slow. Trust me as I’ve seen 2 mishaps in 2 days on the Three Lakes chain.

The groomers are out nightly, working with the snow we have. We did get about 3" of new snow Friday night/Saturday morning and it came just in time for the busy weekend. Traffic was heavy Saturday and somewhat lighter Sunday. Trails should be fair to good today, depending on location. It looks like MN will be stealing most of the next storm but if we get a few inches, things could easily improve to good/very good quickly.

Twin Haven via the new trail; Trail is smooth except for the last 3/4 mile where it turns off the grade. This section has been groomed now but it is new & has the new trail bumps, ride it slowly. For those running along the power lines N from North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

Pioneer, Buckatabon & North Twin are all marked. Lakes have decent snow cover with some slush & frozen ruts. Some areas will handle higher speeds but the rough areas won't.
