Conover, WI

Sorry didn't get in touch over the holidays......family was up and my 24 year old was soooo obnoxious about riding with her brother, kinda wrecked the riding from Friday on. Figured out how to deal with the "Millenial" generation.....take their sleds away, make them buy or rent their own and trade their old sled in for a new sled for dad! Hope it works! ha (works for me) Anyway had one afternoon of good riding over by you. Hit the lake to Twin Haven and took the trail out of there to the grade...NICE. Snow was a little more in MI, north of Bruce Crossing and Sidnaw, it was really nice. Lots of holiday traffic everywhere, it was nice to see good snow over the holidays for a change. Best I've seen in 15- 20 years!

Still want to get together to ride. Contact you next time coming up to Lando!

Rick & I took car to Brew's Pub for lunch Dec24 & then swung your way. Turned around in your driveway. It's -14 right now, planning a quick ride today, maybe St G or Sayner. Will update Snowtracks & here later.

Call me when you want to ride.

Interestingly, my 1-2-17 report above was copied & pasted from my 1-2-17 update on Snowtracks yet when I went on Snowtracks tonight to do an update, it was lost and displaying 12-28. Go figure. FYI, what I post here is a cut & paste each time after I update there.

Conover groomers were out last night & really had things smooth & firmed up this morning.

Today I just rode a 76 mile trip, Conover, Star Lake/Sayner, St Germain & back. Trails were basically good in in all areas. I’ve upgraded my opinion of trails to GOOD, especially considering the minimal new snow we have received. Traffic was nearly non-existent, I’m sure the cold had something to do with that. Temp was -7 when I left, warmed to -3 & dropped back to -6 by the time I returned. Forecast has no real snow and sub zero temps for the next few days. Trails should hold up well with the cold & low traffic levels.

Twin Haven via the new trail; Trail is nice except for the last 3/4 mile where it turns off the grade. This section has now been groomed & is much better but still has new trail bumps.. For those running along the power lines N from North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

The lakes are marked but there are still some rough areas, use caution.

Here you go, fresh off the press:
Groomers are out tonight as I type.

Today I rode Conover to Phelps via the lake, Land O via Lac Vieux Dessert then 6W to 13S. Trails were basically good with a few fair areas, especially considering the minimal new snow we have received. Traffic was nearly non-existent, I passed 6 sleds and 12 deer on the trails. I’m sure the cold had something to do with that. Forecast has 4 to 6 inches of new snow between tonight & Tuesday. Lets hope it isn’t another non-event weather system. Trails should hold up well with the cold & low traffic levels.

Until we get some new snow, expect to see a bit of gravel poking thru on forest road trails & some bare pavement on road routes. Watch your wear bars a bit more than usual.

The lakes are marked and pretty smooth now..

Jim see your due this week for the snow you've been looking for. This snow system looks like a good one with totals of 10"! Your 30 mile loop on a Sunday not seeing many sleds is strange but below zero temps, Packer game, and most folks are just checking in! Is the 2 up pantera taking you to work yet?
Hopefully your next report will say snow coming over bumper!

It's a 660, not a Pantera!!!!!
As far as I know, ER hasn't groomed Alt 13, so no not yet. I don't work tomorrow, I'm thinking of riding to TL as a destination.
When are you guys going to be here?

Brian Scheid, ER trail boss just stopped by, Alt 13 is now groomed.

Groomers are out tonight as I type. Snow started about 6:45 AM and came down for about 12 hours. Winds picked up late afternoon and the snow is blowing. We received a good 8″ from Sunday night until now.

Today 8 of us rode to Tomahawk & back. Conover trails were smooth with fresh snow that kept adding up. By the time I got back this way, with the snow built up it was like riding on a cloud. Trails should be very good or better in the morning. Just watch for drifting in open areas.

Traffic was light on the way down & nearly zero on the way back. I’m sure the snow & low visibility had something to do with that. Forecast has a few more inches Wed night into Thursday. Then the temps drop below zero.

The lakes are marked and pretty smooth now. Again, watch for drifting……

From what we saw, good snows of 6" or more fell everywhere north & east of Tomahawk. After everyone grooms, conditions should be very good in Vilas/Oneida/Forest. Can't speak for south & west but I believe they got good snow too.

Started with freezing rain about 7:20 this morning. Defroster couldn't keep up, then turned to snow about 20 minutes later. Snowed until about 2PM. 4 new inches in my yard. This snow was a bit dryer than yesterday but we'll take it. I'll snap a few pictures of snow banks & measure a few undisturbed spots in the morning. The snow plow berm behind the Broken Arrow was so high that I had to take my skid steer & break it down so I can cut thru to the trail. Will ride tomorrow & then update Snowtracks & here.

Groomers are out tonight as I type. It snowed 4″ Wednesday morning into early afternoon. Winds picked up today and the snow is blowing. We received a good foot from Sunday night until now.

Today 2 of us rode to into Forest County, down to Three Lakes & back. All trails are very good to excellent. Just watch for drifting in open areas. Yes, I know we don’t have a lot of open areas in the Conover network but…..

Traffic was light everywhere today, but it is Vintage Derby weekend in ER so there will be lots of people up. Temps are forecast to drop below zero tonight & be cold Friday.

The lakes are marked and have lots of snow. Again, watch for drifting, North Twin has lots of drifts especially as you head farther east.

Both groomers were out last night. Traffic was heavy Friday night & Saturday with the Vintage Derby weekend in ER & then a constant stream of trailers heading south Sunday. Temps have moderated from the sub-zero lows Friday. Trails should be very good to excellent in the Conover network this morning. How they hold up will depend how high temps climb but I think today will be OK.

Unfortunately, temps are forecast above freezing every day thru Saturday with low 40’s possible by Thursday.

I'm parked until we get winter back, this report is based on non-riding observations.

Both groomers were out last night. Traffic has been very light since Monday. Temps have climbed to highs above 32 and lows fall back below freezing all week. Trails should be good in the Conover network this morning; How they hold up will depend how high temps climb but it has been foggy all morning so I think today will be OK. The sun is peaking out now at noon.

Unfortunately, temps are forecast above freezing every day thru Monday with low 40’s possible. To add insult, a rain/sleet/who knows what mix is forecast for tomorrow & Saturday. It is Derby weekend and typically traffic is crazy. That mix can destroy trails in a hurry. Lets hope people use good judgment.

The lakes are marked and have lots of snow. Watch for drifting, North Twin has lots of drifts especially as you head farther east.

Watch for the possibility of slush and/or standing water in low spots along the trails.

We have lost 5" of snow in the past week, some from melting & some from settling.

I'm parked until winter returns.

The groomers have not been out since Thursday night. Temps briefly fell below freezing early Friday morning and have stayed above since. It is foggy this morning & is forecast to stay foggy until noon. Highs forecast above freezing until Wednesday. It will take several inches of snow and cold to get trails back to good.

Traffic has been light and most I saw were rentals. I can’t imagine riding in poor conditions with rain but……

The lakes are marked and had lots of snow. Watch for the possibility of slush and/or standing water in low spots along the trails and anywhere on the lakes.

Still parked until winter returns.

The groomers went out last night after a 5 day break. Temps finally fell below freezing early yesterday but unfortunately, the snow fall basically all went south. We have had about 1/4″ of mixed precipitation that has at least turned the brown snow banks white. Really all the groomers could do was smoothen out the slushy base as it refroze. There is no snow cover on the trails and it will take 4″ or more to fix the damage. Expect poor (bare) road crossings and road routes will be about the same. Trails may be fair in the woods but corners will be icy. Watch for cooling issues with the hard pack.
