Without a doubt (imo) cover on open trailer.
First year of snowmobiling I had an open trailer. First trip no covers, Had to wash the sleds before we could ride. Second trip, bought real nice "trailering" covers. The salt and crap got between the covers and high gloss paint for 460 miles. So much for the custom paint job on the '79 SRX. Third trip and every trip since, ENCLOSED TRAILER.polarisrider1

Cover at minimum, resale goes south fast on a sled with signs of salt or corosion under the hood.
Seriously? Your bored right? lol. I'll say no cover because salt is a valuable mineral, and the more you collect on the sled, the greater it's resale! haha.

I choose 3 also. enclosed trailer.
if i had an open trailer, i still would go with a cover. It does help keep the grime off. I did trailer with the cover on once on the way up north and it we hd a thick spray, followed by bitter cold. the covers we red completely frozen to the sleds. almost had to go Deadliest catch like the guy on the other thread. I was able to get the cover off and put it on the ground. Looked like i had brought a third sled along.

Ive had that happen several times, had to throw the covers in the hotel bathtub to thaw out

Ok I'm assuming you have an open trailer and a trailing cover. Buy 2 big blue tarps (one for the way there and one for the way back)and go over everything tight. Even if the tarp rips most likely it will be where it is flapping which is normally the back. and your sled cover will protect the rest.

I have a covered wagon but still end up on a big open trailer 1 time or more a yr and have never had a issue with messing up paint or anyting like that.
buy the quality cover not the cheep unlined canvas thing snug it up tight and go have fun.
I have shrink wraped the whole trailer and coverd sleds and gear gas cans tool boxes for 13hr or so drives 50 bucks each way and worth it.

What if your sled is on a low sodium diet? I would think you would want to keep the salt off the sled.
I can't answer the question about grime because I don't know if the sled is male or female.

I've found if your cover flaps around too much, if you wash (and dry it on low temperature), it shrinks it enough so it fits more snugly. Also, if all the cover does is filter out grit from going under your hood its worth it. Don't miss my open trailer days.
