Curious - Anyone else ever think about selling their sled and getting an ATV instead?

Myself and a few other members of Team RIDEHARD were on Lake Winnebago by Sherwood, WI yesterday for opening day of sturgeon spearing. We had our Summits out there tearing it up, having a blast in the untouched snow and catwalking like crazy on the edges of the plowed roads...

Then I saw people putting around at a snails pace on ATVs, and I thought to myself... "Boy, that really looks like it sucks!"

I am considering a Can-Am Commander just for utility purposes at my shop and also for cruising around at some events like the off road races in Crandon, but I would never consider replacing my Summits with one.

We did the snowmobiling thing years back sold them and got into atving. We dont miss waiting for snow conditions as with atvs you just go out and ride.

Sure we do miss the high rate of speeds you can ride but as we are getting older its more on enjoying the outdoors while atving.

We were going to rent sleds on our trip next weekend but its looking like we are going to ride our atvs. The four letter word SNOW!

Sorry to get off topic but I'm originally from Green Bay and use to go out on Duck Creek perch fishing.

Trail riding with ATV’s was just not fun for us, especially compared with sledding. Last summer we traded our 2 ATV’s for a new Polaris Ranger. The Ranger has been used more in the last 6 months then we ever used the ATV’s in the 6 years we had them. At least with the ranger in MN you can drive it on most roads except State highways and Freeways. Still, we would never consider getting rid of the sleds.

I don't think there is anyway we could ever REPLACE our sleds for stirctly atv riding. There would have to be one of each. ;-) As far as riding conditions depending on where abouts you ride I could see atving being more of a headache. I remember selling atv's to people for 6-10 grand and riding the machine in the empty lot in the subdivision when I lived in the Twin Cities. I couldnt justify that. Living in the U.P., Marquette county, I think this area is the "little known secret for recreational atv riding." It's easier to justify the expense of an atv/utv when there are trails. True it can be dirty and dusty, but there isnt that large of an issue with off trail riding or trails. But it just can't replace that rip on the sled! ;-)

Our group has sleds and atvs,love both but if I had to choose between them it would be the atvs we use them year round.

I do both. All pts on limited (and kinda boring imo) riding are accurate and the biggest negative compared to sledding. There are places such as the Cliffs off road park in Marseilles IL for the extreme stuff. Dan Healy and I have been there many times and you can get as extreme as you want with creeks, mud, hills, rocks, etc. We used the winch to pull out of a mud bit that was at least 75' long. Another neat park down in Quincy for same type of riding.
We have done a few trips to the Yoop but would classify those as lazy and relaxing....could have found trouble if wanted. Dave and Lori took us from South Range to Krupps via the woods few yrs ago and that was fun.
I mainly use mine now for plowing which it does well. Oh almost forget to add that wheelers bounce and don't stick like Cats! ouch! lol

Well I own both right now In winter Im 100% sleder !! i use our atv up north for pulling tree's for fire wood , pulling a special trailor to carrie a canue to off the beaten path lakes to fish and many other fun things like John said eating dirt on trails .. also use it for sighning trails .. Tried it last winter well that sucked big time cant go more than 40 mph on the thing down the trail its cold and sledders hate following you on the thing . the tires just dig up the trail trying to grab traction at times .. but the big thing is YOU ARE CONSTANTLY COLD !unlike riding your sled !! ive heard people say ohhh atving in winter is fun I really dont see how it could be .. its a work hoarse !! a sled will get you beyond 100 miles in a day ,,you are lucky if you put that on in a day driving a atv you would freeze your patuti off and that fun you were having lasts about a mile or 2 !! just my thoughts ..keep the rubber side down !!

interesting answers...not close to what i expected from those that have both. i dont have a sled now but have in the distant past. i view riding in the snow as a fun thing to do 1-2 times per year...and being the wuss that i am, 50 miles is more than enough. the backcountry pics i see look like as much fun as a trip to the dentist to me.

now atving on the other hand gets me excited. miles is not the objective, i enjoy the ride. riding rail beds isnt my favorite thing, that is where most of the dust mentioned is at. if i am not mistaken, there are about 500 miles of marked-legal trails in this area (west up). a good share of these trails are not rail grades. the only times i get so much dust that it bothers me is when you ride in large groups (something i find less than enjoyable anyway). groups of 2-4 are fun, easy to manage and not real dusty.

shorts, warm air, the wind, fishing/swimming along the way....far better than all the warm duds and cold weather if you ask me. and cost...holy cow!!!! you can spend as little or as much as you want with atvs....i personally own 2 of them that cost me 1-2k each....10+ yrs ago. an oil change and some minor maintence each year...that is all i need. no high end clothes...just me and my fishing pole.

in lower michigan, i would ride atv year round. fun to bust a trail..then ride it. i have acreage to ride on...i am sure that made a big difference.

not even a comparison to me....seems the same for all that posted...pnly opposite of my thoughts! takes all kinds!!! and I am glad you guys like the snow!
