A diesel only makes sense if you are going to actually tow with it for 100k miles or so. The extra cost of a diesel for most of us is not worth it. I have a GMC with the 6.0 and it is a gas hog, but at 2k miles a year it doesn't make sense to have a diesel. If a diesel is all you want, I would go for the Cummins.

I have a Duramax and love it. I will put over 200,000 on it so it makes sense for me. I can justify the cost with the miles I put on it towing and not towing. Its an 06 with 98 on it now, no problems yet. just general maint. Good luck in your choice

I have a cummins and a hemi. I'm not gonna try to tell anyone dodge is the best, but I will say I am very happy with both.
Both are 05, and we buy with the intention of using them up.

120k on the cummins, change oil at 10k, fuel filter whenever I remember, and usually a wheel bearing every 2 years.

The truth is the hemi cost more in fuel when broken down per mile. It will take diesel to cost $1 per gallon more for them to break even for my trucks. The hemi cost more to maintain. The hemi cost less new, but the hemi is worth a heck of alot less used.
This is my experience for pre emissions diesels, if you are going with a 07 or later then it may be different.

I would have no problem buying a duramax. Would take a heck of a good deal to buy a new 6.7 ford. I wouldn't touch a 6.0, or 6.4 ford. And I'm not fond of the 7.3 fords either.

that is week.
I cant own diesel any way. wish I could but every time I am close to the muffler path of one running in the cold it makes my asthma kick in.summer is ok just cold and diesel fumes.
It must be something they add to it now that they did not yrs ago cuz 20 yrs ago I had a suburban diesel and never had a issue. or I am just getting older and the yrs of abuse are catching up

Hmm, my bud has a 2012 duramax and you cannot smell it at all. Start it in the garage and its cleaner than a gas 4cyl car. Not much urine running through it at idle if any at all.

Prolly "other" things contributing to your illness

I haven't done much research on it, but I have heard that the Dodge diesel does not require urea. Dodge struggles with keeping check engine lights off of the bigger units...I know a fellow who had his bought back with less than 5k miles because they couldn't figure out how to keep the light off...factory engineers worked on it but still had no clue. After a bunch of visits, they bought the truck back and he bought a Duramax.

Both Ford and GM build great diesel trucks now....and I would shop warranty on them...and let the overall price decide which way to go. Dodge diesels either work or they don't. I do know that you take a hit on used Dodge Diesel trucks compared to Ford and GM both tending to hold value better.

They are crazy expensive machines...but they will discount the heck out of them at model change over.

New cummins are on the urine.
Dodge and chevy had some issues in 07-08 with the new to then DPF. Software update fixed that.

Actually Dodge has had the least issues with the new emissions, with duramax right behind. Neither have had any major issues though. Ford had a few bugs when their 6.7 first came. But as far as I've seen, they've been decent.

Chevy and ford both are using the Bosch CP4 injector pump. And it has been problematic, especially for Ford. Dodge is still using the CP3 which has been bulletproof since 03 for dodge and Chevy.

Probably can't go wrong with any of them.

I tow with an older (2004) Dodge. Juiced up a little but not crazy. Tows anything I have hauled so far effortlessly. All my friends are amazed that it never shifts out of overdrive, even though I have 33's on it. Set the cruise and go. Checked the milage on our last sledding trip and it got 16.2 with 4 guys, gear and sleds. Usually get a little better than that when it's couples or just the wife and I.

Duramax stay away from 01-04, 04.5 and newer are great. The LB7 (01-04) had major injector problems and head gasket problems (composite heads). Power strokes run as fast as you can away from the 6.0, 6.4s were better but not by much. The old 7.3 is reliable but not juiced up, feels like you're driving a school bus. The new 6.7 is a monster, not sure on reliability yet but 400 hp 800 ft lbs of torque stock. Cummins, any motor is great imo but the rest of the truck is another story... I don't own one but think talk and sleep sleds snow and trucks and have buds who have them (mostly cummins) and thats my honest opinion.
