Dog on a chain?

This is something I hate to see and question owners that follow this practice. I know there are some people that may have a dog outside on a chain but also spend alot of time in a day to interact with their pets. A dog is mans best friend and would do anything for their owners. I rescued a dog a few years ago and returned it to the rightful owner. The owners wife was dissabled and asked that I return the dog to the chain it had broken to get away in the first place. The chain was wrapped around a tree multiple times and his drinking water was green. After returning the dog to his area I returned to the home to share my displeasure with the dog's current living conditions and offered to take him off their hands. They shared with me that the dog was a gift from their grandkids and have only had it a short time. The dog escaped again and found his way to my house days later. When I returned the dog a second time the husband asked if I was still interested in the dog. I returned later that night to pick up his food, papers and leads. He was seven when I got him and lived a great life a was spoiled rotten to the end.

If I'm reading this correctly. My condolences for you loss. They become part of the family more than any one could know.

owning a dog

I can't agree more. Owning a dog is a big responsibility which some people don't understand. When it comes to old folks, they think they are doing the right thing cause they were brought up that a dog was just a dog( not all old people are this way, just some). Glad you got these people to surrender this animal. Rescue animals ROCK, they have the biggest and most forgiving hearts. Gotta go tend to my senior Dobe girl, she is more than spoiled!

Is it possible they are just out there during the day while their owner is at work?

I put my dog in a kennel that is inside everyday we have to go to work. Other than that she is out and sometimes when it is hectic in the house she will go in there and even take a nap.

I hear ya though, it seems mean to do that. There are some dogs though that I don't know how you could let them inside all the time because they either shed really bad, really stink, etc...

X4, less the introduction method. I would propose a stern tongue lashing followed by a detailed report to the authorities. The face pain of your method is too short lived. :)

I would love to let someone that thinks it is ok to spend a night like last week in a box with some straw not to mention frozen water. Just wrong.

I am one who is not tolerant of animal abuse. It actually makes me sick. Hunting and domesticated pets are 2 entirely different issues. I would rather see humans on chains. A dog will love you to the end, people will not. Report any and all animal abuse. Please! If you can not afford to or are to ignorant too feed and care for your animals there are others who will. Why would someone chain a dog up outside and not give it any attention is beyond me? It is not good for your soul and it is not good for the animal to be treated that way.

Our snow lab sheds really bad and he is inside. We bought the Dyson animal vacuum. Kinda spendy but works great. Have to vacuum more often. He's an awesome dog. It wasn't like we didn't know he would shed, if you are making that committment to have an animal, then be committed just like they are committed to you!

The kennel is a great tool when housebreaking a dog too. They like going in there to get away from it all, they are den animals so their instincts kick in. Although my fur kid thinks the waterbed is her den!!! I agree about the long hair thing, that's one reason I have always had Dobermans(25years now). Takes me no time to groom but she does have to wear a coat outside when it's cold.

Haveing had both outside dogs(hunting) and now a inside dog(american bulldog) i feel as long as the outside kenneled dogs get daily feeding/watering/let out to play/kennel cleaned basically a responsible owner there is nothing wrong with it. My old irish setter would sit on top of his dog house in -20 temps so i find it hard to belive he was in fact cold when he could get out of the wind and cold and into his insulated/sided dog house. My outside kennel is 6x12 and i put my inside american bulldog out there in the summer time when i go to work. Its either that or a inside 3x3 kennel so which is better for the dog???

I wonder should i even bring up the whole shock collar/invisible fence stuff? My neighbor has 1 and leaves his dog outside dureing the day but yet has the nerve to say its inhumane to leave a dog kenneled up outside. Everyone has there own opinion on what others should and shouldnt do with their animals i guess. But bottom line is all pet owners need to be responsible and just because a dog is kept inside doesnt make the owner a responsible owner.

Agree. The bottom line is the dog needs to be a happy dog.

X3. Seen plenty of happy dogs outside. Growing up I had outside dogs. They all got food, water, and plenty of attention. Some were chained, some were keneled. As stated above. When it got really cold we would bring them into the heated garage or wet room of the house. Most wanted to go back outside. I had one that would rarely go into his house. He would dig trenches and lay in them in the summer and winter and when he wasn't there would climb onto his roof. Sat up there in the rain, blizzards, sun. My mom colled him special ed., but that's a different story. He liver over 12 years.

Now I've got 2 labs and 2 cats in the house.
