As I said in a preious post I can see a difference in sled traffic in this area from 5-10 years ago. This has to be effecting local business's.

We were once stopped four times in one afternoon, three of those stops were within a few miles of each other I mean literally 2 or 3 miles, one of the guys in our riding group that day is a Milwaukee Cop and after we departed the final check stop he just shook his head and laughed about how Mickey Mouse the local yokels were, he has a different perspective being in law enforcement, from where I was standing it was an obvious attempt to milk tourists of every last nickle.

In the long run this type of enforcement action clearly drives away a lot more money than it generates as people will simply choose not to return, if I owned a business in one of these areas I would insist on a policy of protect and SERVE, police should be in the background for assistance but not front and center handing out tickets to people on vacation and spending their hard earned money in my town.

My two cents worth anyway.

If that ain't kissin' azz..............I don't know what is.

If that would have been just some average Joe sittin' there, would you have stopped?
I'd bet not. I'll bet half of the wardens just sit back and laugh at all the people who suck up thinkin' they might get out of some future ticket.

Just callin' it like I see it.

FYI,I stop quite frequently. so,do tell what you were doing each time to have all these experiences with law enforcement.

I believe the area in question in northern wi is as bad as it gets with the dnr. we have ran into the same crap in that area for years, harrassment, not just stops. we were given tickets in down town st germain for usin the side of the hyway for less than 50 feet to get fuel. no warning just bs. The dnr in Mi are way easier to get along with. no attitudes just do their job and check things out keepin folks legit. just MY 2 cents

I live in Minocqua, and it really bothers me to hear people say they will not visit our area because of a certain law enforcement agency. The businesses that are going to be negatively affected by that have nothing to do with the DNR bothering people and don't want them here anymore than you do. I do not work in a "tourism" business, but know many good people that do, and they don't deserve the loss of business for incidents like this.

Two years ago, we were riding in the Wautoma area. We came upon a Sheriff's Deputy parked on the side of the trail in a farm field. We all rolled by slowly as he waved us through. The last guy in our group had an expired registration and was stopped. He got a $200 ticket and we went on our way. Was this considered a checkpoint? We don't ride trails anymore so I guess I never see the "checkpoints" or "speed traps" people talk about. My buddy had nobody to be upset with, but himself. He didn't play by the rules and it cost him an extra $170 instead of just registering the sled. Lesson learned...........

As far as the Lakeland Times article goes, the people with the unregistered vintage sled deserve a ticket as well. I will say that not being able to ride it back home is a little excessive, but not paying a small amount to register a sled is inexcusable. The bottom line is that if you break the law, you deserve a ticket. Would you refuse to go to back to a city if you got a speeding ticket there in your car? It doesn't make sense. With all this being said, if people were truly harassed by the DNR, then something needs to be done about it. If you or someone you know was harassed by the DNR in Minocqua over Cruiserfest, I would contact the warden in the Lakeland Times article so something can be done about it.

Please don't hold an issue like this against the town of Minocqua, or its businesses.....

You need to lobby the DNR on this.... not those of us that choose not to go to these to avoid being harrassed.

I agree, your buddy got a ticket he deserved....and probably the vintage sled also but if they were just there for the parade/show there should be some leniency.

You need to change your location.....

IF you live in the town maybe the business owners should be the ones taking it up with the local DNR and local law enforcement agencies. Like someone said stay away from the carnival if you don't want to be part of the circus. WI and the UP have lots of places that you can spend your money at and not be bothered.

I know they do a sting every year around the Outagaime Conservation club when they have the oval races. This year the trails were closed so they couldn't do it. They give out noise decibal tickets, failure to stop tickets and dui tickets all day long. I am glad they didn't get the oppurtunity to give tickets out this year. Maybe it gave the DNR some time to concentrate on the deer population issue.

I would them rather give out DUI tickets

I agree with the leniency on the vintage parade riders. If I was that officer, I would have let them ride, and told them to register the sleds ASAP.

After this recent incident, I am sure the town officials and businesses will have something to say to the DNR about stuff like this, but do you really think anything is going to change?

It really comes down to the fact that people need to play by the rules and they should not have any issues. There were 34 tickets issued, 75 verbal warnings and 5 arrests made. What percentage of total sledders in town that weekend were affected (or harassed)? What if I came on here and said for example that I got a speeding ticket in Wausau issued by the State Patrol so I will never spend any time or money in Wausau ever again because I was harassed by a state law enforcement agency? That would not make sense, just like punishing town businesses does not make sense.

my location is fine................

Yield Signs

Can yield signs be used in some places insted of stop signs like driveways and other places?I have seen them in some places that I think worked better than a stop sign.

5th Amendment

Why is a checkpoint a big deal if your not breaking the law? Minor inconvienence maybe, Please tell me you didnt just compare getting checked for proper sled registration to the gestapo!

I don't know olsmann. Ever heard of the Bill of Rights or the Constitution? That pesky 4th Amendment...

The right of the people to be secure
in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

If you give up freedoms under the guise of safety, you deserve neither.
PS, I don't drink either. Czechpoints are a gestapo tactic. Period

No one was was illegaly searched. Cops and DNR can sit anywhere they want and check licesnse tabs/registration. And if they smell booze they have probable cause. Bring it to court if you like but all these these self appointed lawyers on the web will find out they are perfectly in thier right to set up a check point especially in an area that might have had complaints. Like I said before, take off the tin foil hats, this is not the goverment taking your freedoms away. Funny, if this is such a blatant violation of peoples constitutional rights its suprising that no one has done more about it than complain on the internet. How is this any different than a DNR walking up to you on the lake and asking to see your fishing lic?

I myself really feel sorry for those of you who spend so much time worrying about these topics and let the fact that there are people out there drinking and riding, and from your comments your probably more concerened with that than actually riding and having fun. Your time wasted preaching to the people that do drink may save one life and more power to you, but to think for a second that there are not as many drinkers as non- drinkers is absurd, where do trails lead to bars resteraunts, not churches. What about the riders out there just for the scenery and family time, that feel they have the right to stop on a corner int the middle of the trail or on the the opposite side of a hill to see the amazing and recently elusive deer jumping through the woods those are the concern to me, yet I dont sit on here bashing them even tho a guy in my group t boned a 52 yr old man who stopped to show his wife this. If it concerns some that much then when you see a sled coming get off the trail and let him go by, after all he might of had 4 beers and has a death wish, do i stop at every corner and listen for sleds coming,NO, we all take chances out there, ride have fun and stop trying to preach about things that arent going to change, or stay home and play monopoly, much less a chance of a drunk driver coming through your living room wall.
And yes im a 3,4,5 beer guy and if you think thats wrong you need a reality check

Well I suppose that depends on what you weigh... I weigh 180 (at 70", this is a 25BMI) and 5 beers would rock my world. If you're an oaf I suppose that may be alright. However, you're basically saying it's okay to be drunk and ride... and telling us we need a reality check? lol...
