Too Many variables

I'm not trying to be too troublesome but you really need to look at everything now and not just an " I think it's OK" look. This piston came out of a running 600ZRT. Yes running, and I couldn't believe it but the cylinder was still good. Smooth running motor with no knocking. Engine noise comes from everything so if you don't find it before you take it apart, you have to take it all the way apart to eliminate multiple problems. If you are not qualified, find someone who is. Good Luck

I think we found the problem!!!!! Those pistons should have been replaced EONS AGO. How many miles on this sled? Thats odd that they are that beat up! Was this thing runnin on nails or something! lol Thats amazing that the engine would still turn over with those in it! Thats crazy!

My piston

Come on guys. Keep up with the story!!! That piston was from a ZRT 600 tripple. All of the pieces of the piston skirt were found in the pipe. There were a few small pieces in the bottom of the case. The motor was not put back together because of all of the collateral damage to the motor and the owner didn't want to put that much money back into an old sled. The little chunk of the piston in the 1st pic only fell off when the piston was pulled out of the cylinder. Strange but True!!!! I have a 780 Mach Z motor that did this on the center cylinder and it sawed the motor in half. The only pieces holding the motor together was part of the head water jacket and the crankshaft. Jsled82, You never told us what the determining factor was for "Just" replacing pistons. Do you have pics?
