Gantry Hoist

Anyone every build a gantry? I just finished building one and would like to know what it's capacity might be. I put a 1 ton chain hoist and trolley on it, but I would like too know if it would handle more. Is there a way to test them, or are their capacities rated by the material that is used?

What PR1 MEANT was that they'll (cuz I don't even know what in the name of Sam Hill you're talking about) have to have pictures so they can properly assess your construction and properly assess the capabilities of said equipment!!! :)

(LMAO @ PR1)

Forget about the pictures. All we really need to know are:

1) Was this constructed by a Union Tradesman or not?

2) Was the material used all from the USA or God forbid somewhere else?

3) Were the proper permits obtained and if so, has there been an increase in the permit prices recently? Or where there be an increase soon?

4) While using the gantry, do you plan to wear a helmet or not?

5) If any lubrication will be used, will it be Amsoil, Sea and Snow or an OEM product?

Answer these and the experts will be able to take it from there!

^^^^^^ That right there is funny.

With that said it depends on your material, distance from supports to the pick up point etc. Basic statics can get you in the ballpark for a load rating but you will have to take into affect beam deflection.

The one we have here at woork has a 10' span, 6" round tube uprights 10' high and 8" I beam 3/8" thick spans the 10' rated at 1 ton. I'll see if I can get a pic to post

I think John missed a couple though. During operation will the operator use hand signals so the bystanders know what to expect, and the obvious zero tollerance will be observed also!

I did some searching and found lots of plans and good pictures but not much as par as specs for lifting capacities. I would have to guess that there are liabilities involves in that. You should be able to copy one of the basic designs. As long as the material used is heavy enough, it is put together correctly and common sense is used while lifting you should be fine.

How much time/how many beers do you have invested in this project?

Typically, a beer an hour is a nominal rate. Any more than that and accuracy and stamina tend to suffer.

And I think there is also some sort of diminishing capacity and beer formula that's out there as well, if I'm not mistaken.

xcr - not off topic...just fillers until folks who really might know what they're talking about can get some info to the poor guy.

I still want to know the purpose of the building of said device and what the plans for use are?
