You guys are too funnny!

As for Johns questions
1. I work for a union, does that count.
2. I got the materials in the USA
3. No permits were obtained, but my wife said it was ok.
4. No helmet required, the damage has already been done.
5. Schaefers Lubricants

It was built with 4" I-beams (legs and cross member), it's 9'6" high and 9'6" wide. And I may have exceded the 1 beer an hour.

That looks pretty sweet for low impact applications, like lifting a sled, ATV, even pulling a motor out of a car! And the fact that you put it on wheels is awesome......

So that's a gantry crane? Bought mine from harbor frt.
1. Slave labor
2. Material from China
3. No permits, didn't ask wife
4. Helmet required
5. Free 10 wt. Oil for lubricant

Mine was built from recycled 1972 vegas and pintos.
warning labels all over it.

Yours is way better.

jr, I'm sorry...I was distracted looking at your garage!! What was I supposed to be looking at again?

That is a really cool thing ya got there. EXCELLENT answers to John's questions - especially the wife's approval (which we all know is far more imortant that any other kind!) What kind of locks do you have for the wheels? Or is it gonna be like a Wile E Coyote kind of thing? :D

what size of I beams did you use 4 x how many pounds per foot? what size angle did you use to mount the uprights to 4x4x? I dont think I would try lifting any more than a 1/2 ton with it.! ton=2000 pounds.Do you feel safe working around it with 2000 pounds hanging from it? what about anchoring it to the floor so it can't tip over?we had some jib cranes at work made out of 4 inch I beam and they only had a 1/4 ton hoist on them.maybe somebody on here works in engineering that can answer your questions better but to me it looks a little weak.

Chances are that it will never lift anything over about 500 lbs. I know that it is not built to be very heavy, just to make things a little easier for me once in a while. I probably wouldn't even try anything close to 1000 lbs. My question on how to rate it's capacity is just out of curiosity. I not a pro welder by any means, but I enjoy doing things like that, it was fun to build.

I used it last nite to lift something and it didn't break, so it survived its maiden voyage. lol

Just wait for Professor Nash to chime in. He's got nothing but time to look this kind of stuff up. I think he even enjoys it! :)

Where ya at Nash, still working the figures out, or still checking over the grammar?:D

OOh Ooh! Build me one! I'm looking for one like that so I can lift the cab of my 51 off the frame by myself. Yoou could easily pull engines with that badboy. Looks nice. How much to build? If that is too personal let me know.
I would say somthing smarta.., but they all beat me to it.
Alright, whats with the JUST MARRIED sign in YOUR garage. Trying to keep the wife happy?ha.

Jr,
That's a nice garage. You're lucky we're not neighbors otherwise I'd be over there all the time borrowing tools, beers, and playin with the toys.
Heck, most of the guys on this thread would say the same!

And come November, you've got a portable Buck Pole for hunting season. How sweet is that?

...nice garage!!! the only thing i would question is the strenght of the caster wheels, they kinda look like the weakest link...jmho

I asked about the wheels too...was curious about what type of lock mechanism they have...

Somebody needs to start a thread about garages so ya'll can pound chests!?! :D

Jr I'm a rigger by trade and i can tell you right now that that thing will lift a ton "no problem" depending on 2 factors. First the quality of the welds. Second the quality of the wheels. That being said; I caution you on the use of these, if your not used to them. Make sure your load is directly under the cross beam when lifting and if at all possible move the work out from under the crane after the lift is complete, rather than moving the crane with load on it. They do tend to tip over on occasion. Looks nice and compliments the nice shop you have.

how much wt?

Anyone every build a gantry? I just finished building one and would like to know what it's capacity might be. I put a 1 ton chain hoist and trolley on it, but I would like too know if it would handle more. Is there a way to test them, or are their capacities rated by the material that is used?

I have gutted deer, dreesed (put pantys on them ,but that is just me..lol...lol) your chain looks good and your gantry is stroung...MEATHEAD

JD..?

jr37-

Forget about the pictures. All we really need to know are:

1) Was this constructed by a Union Tradesman or not?

2) Was the material used all from the USA or God forbid somewhere else?

3) Were the proper permits obtained and if so, has there been an increase in the permit prices recently? Or where there be an increase soon?

4) While using the gantry, do you plan to wear a helmet or not?

5) If any lubrication will be used, will it be Amsoil, Sea and Snow or an OEM product?

Answer these and the experts will be able to take it from there!

-John

You guys make me laugh!

The shop is a mess right now because the camper is in there yet. Once it's gone, then I get my shop back. Car trailer goes where the camper is and the pool table and couch go where the trailer is. And then I actually have room to work.

I like the comments on the portable swing and such. Funny!

Not sure why I kept the "Just Married" sign.

Cost about $200 to build. Only had to buy the hoist, trolley and casters, plus welding rods. All the steel I picked up over the years for free, saved a chunk of money there.

The casters have a 500 lb. rating each and they do not lock.

Indy, sorry you didn't get to see the 15 foot Cat banner on the other wall. I know you would like that.

Thanks for the comments and compliments.
