I read somewhere that the National Forests that are not gated we are still allowed to be in.
Has anyone else heard this?
I'm pretty sure that is correct. As far as I know the many miles of ungated and unposted roads that exist in the Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests are open to vehicular traffic year round, with seasonal weight restrictions which may apply. There are a lot of private landowners within the National Forest boundary that need access. Any landowners beyond locked gates would usually have keys.
I will not comment on politics as per the supposed rules of this website, other than to say that in my opinion our National Forests up here are well managed and I appreciate their existence. There are always those that will bitch because they cannot do whatever wherever they please, but the overall good outweighs the selfish interests of the few.
The truth is that our National Forests offer many opportunities for motorized recreation and enough miles of roads and trails to keep even the most hard core riders occupied for months if they so desire.
