Heard a rumor from a pretty good source.

I have been riding out of Munising since 1982 and was a member of the club until it folded.
I agree that something has to be done with the grooming.
A few years ago, there was a lady from Shingleton that was trying to get a extra trail along #8.
I had suggested to run part of it along the south side of the trail on the unplow road(to the west of Hy13).
That would help dividing the traffic for a few miles.
Nothing was never done about it but maybe Buddah could look into it.
If I go up there and ride during the week, it's always pretty good because of less riders.
If you go up on the weekend when all the motels are full, no groomers will ever be able to keep the trails level.
Just to much traffic for all the sleds.

How about a poll to see who would be interested in forming a club in the Munising area? We'll be moving there in Oct. and we'd love to get involved in a club. Count me in!

We need to have a leader. We need to contact the dnr or msa. Maybe someone can chime in that is a member of a club that gets funding from trail permits.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, nothing is going to change unless the grooming contract is taken away from the Visitor's Bureau. Too much "old boys network" at play there/here.

And yes, Polarice, it is Gerou.......Stan Jr. (actually the III) has it now....Stan is virtually retired and playing golf in FL.

.... By the way is that burned down bridge finished yet? Makes a nice fence without it. Get a clue.

Burned down bridge? You've thrown me for a loss there.......you don't mean the bridge just west of the Miner's Castle trail on Trail 8 (the Coalwood Grade) ? If so, that was replaced before I moved here......but it was virtually new when we got here so that's the only one I can think of in the Munising system????

He may be referring to the bridge that got burned down in Marquette late last year?

Paying someone by the mile is the first mistake. That's crazy. But to say nothing is going to change is crazy as well. If you get enough people involved, including local businesses that seem to be fed up, you can make a difference. The problem is if everyone takes that attitude, nothing will change. There is power in numbers. You know the old saying, Nothing happens if nothing happens! Get organized!

Never really dealt with a local "power broker" and his clique, have you? I've seen it in several different locations where I've lived. Usually in small towns and counties. One or several people control everything that happens in that town/county. And virtually nothing happens that they didn't pre-approve. Well, that's the situation we're fighting here.......from what I understand from the old time locals it's been that way since the 30's and 40's. There is no "power in numbers" because nothing ever makes it to an election. Nobody except those in charge ever get to change anything......and they have absolutely no reason to change.............

Munising trails

Guys. I think that the Munising area needs more trails to spread out the traffic and reduce the pressure on trail 8. I ride the area almost every weekend and some during the week. The traffic is as heavy as any area in the Yoop. My obsevation is that the groomers are trying but with the warm temps that we have had this winter the snow never sets up and certainly will not hold long without cold temperature. There are some really good options for additional trail. From H-13 to M-94 why not groom the unplowed road that runs just South of trail 8? Or a trail from Stueben across 445 to Doe Lake road to meet up with trail 7? The area needs more trails with the traffic that it gets.

I agree that there should be more trails. The question then arises as to who is going to groom them. The system they have with pay per mile is bs. Seriously they should not groom 15mph. I don't know what the h to think. I need another beer :)

O.K., we had another discussion about this this morning including one of the guys who has lived here his entire life......when the guy told me several years ago that the operators got paid by the mile, it was accurate at that time. Seems they had too many issues and have changed it to where the groomer operators supposedly get paid for an eight hour shift. Of course that begs the question what if it takes longer than 8 hours for a given run? Same net result as paid by the mile...........????

I have seen groomers left idling for 8 hours to run up engine hours meter in this area in the past when they paid by the hour.

This is a huge DNR problem to me, they should be watching this and removing funding if the job is not getting done. All groomers get paid by the mile "I mean all" and it up to the Club or contractor how the money is used. $5.27 per mile is the pay for this year, it changes every year because of fuel costs. This money is used however the club/contractor wants as long as the trails are getting groomed, some for fuel, maintenance on equipment, some to pay drivers, by groomer barns...ect Grooming it is up to the DNR (which is always short handed) to enforce

This is a link to the handbook with the rules and regulations
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/IC1850_325516_7.pdf

This I copied out of the handbook

D. COMPLIANCE WITH GROOMING SPECIFICATIONS
Standard: The trail sponsor must meet trail grooming specifications as outlined in this grant handbook and instructions provided at pre-season meetings.
Penalty: Notice of noncompliance and reimbursement penalties may be imposed by the Department for inadequate trail grooming by the trail sponsor as follows: The Department issues a written Notice of Failure to Perform to the trail sponsor and imposes a penalty of a five percent (5%) reduction of the current monthly grooming reimbursement for the noncompliant trail segment. Each subsequent case of noncompliance will result in a written Notice of Failure to perform and a five percent (5%) reduction of the current monthly trail grooming reimbursement for each noncompliant trail segment.
Two (2) written Notices of Failure to Perform issued in one (1) year will be sufficient cause for elimination from the program or placement on one-year probation. Receipt of a written Notice of Failure to Perform while on probation is sufficient cause for immediate elimination from the grant program.

Interesting, they just need the man power to enforce
