Helmets

I'm looking at switching to an open face helmet this season. The two helmets I'm looking at are the 509 evolution and the fxr octane, any input or advice on either helmet. Also what kind of goggles does everyone use, looking at 509 sinisters or a pair of Scott's or castle x. I will also be purchasing a klim arctic balaclava. I have a early model skidoo modular helmet right now so it's time for an upgrade. Ok, talk me into something.

I have 509 evolution helmet and 509 sinister goggles and love it. Paid something like $180 for the 2 also. I love both of them best helmet/goggles ive owned to date. Also check out the fly carbon fiber, very light and not too pricey for a carbon fiber helmet.

Thanks Indy for commenting, I have a place nearby that's stocks 509 helmets, so as long as it fits good I think I will give it a try.

BTW i bought a klim balaclava and it was WAYYYY too small. I went with an under armour instead. Neck aint too long on it though but i didn't want it to be.

Can someone tell me the main advantage of using an open face? It seems your face would freeze? So there must be something I'm missing. Please enlighten me.

I'd say it's really personal preference. For me it's weight and breathability. Most of my riding is in the bush, and I have a tendency to get stuck a few times, which sometimes requires an extensive dig out, and gets me worked up and sweating. When I use to try it with my closed face, I'd fog it up immediately after putting it back on, and the helmet would become soaking wet because of lack of venting and air flow compared to the open face. With the open face, I just throw the helmet back on, ride a few minutes without attaching the goggles till I cool down, then re-attach them. I've got two sets of pro-vue's with the exhaust fan that work excellent for removing moisture that causes fogging. I prefer a cooler helmet in the bush vs a warm one. If I ever need additonal protection to keep from getting to cold, I just throw on a partial face "Fog Vader" mask over my balclava, and go. Lastly is the weight. My BRP modular is much heavier than my Klim F4, and just doesn't feel anywhere near as klunky.

I will say the closed face typically has a better degree of visibility from side to side, so there are a some gives and takes, but this is just my reason for wearing one.

I ordered the balaclava today, good thing I have a small head I guess. My helmet size will probably be small or medium depending on the fit and how thick the arctic balaclava is.

2nd the Fly carbon fiber helmet. I've typically bought expensive top of the line helmets, and the Fly holds it's own against them. The eye port is big enough, that it lets your goggles seal tightly around your face, which keeps moisture and snow from getting in ,preventing fogging. It's comfortable , and very light.

I have the Fly Carbon Fiber F2, love it, great fit with goggles, and light.

I did a lot of research on the 509 lid, and others, and I finally figured out that the 509 was the same as the AFX 17 helmet, except with a supposed different liner. You can get the AFX 17 for under a 100 bucks. IMO one is paying an extra 100 bucks for the graphics of the 509. That being said, the 509 lids look awesome.

Thanks for the heads up on this Skylar. I think I am going with the AFX FX-17 for the reason you indicated. I've read good thing about it and seems to be a great value.

I'm also going with the 509 Sinister goggles and a Ski-Doo Mountain balaclava which has a neoprene breath deflector built it. It's snowing like crazy here West of Mpls. Can't wait to get out!
