The Liberty 500 is what swampcap is talking about, and he's not joking. I snowchecked (2) 1999 500 XC SP's for my son and stepson and they hauled arse! They both would go over 100 mph and were so light and fun on the trail. These were also pre-exhaust valve. Those Liberty 500's are a great motor! I had a 1999 700 XC SP at the time and the 500's could run with it and I'm not kidding or dreaming. Farthest thing from a laim duck I've ever ridden!

I know Poo took a lot of slack with the made in America stickers on sleds with fuji motor in it. I think part of the liberty motor idea and the name "liberty" attached to the new motors was intended to stop the chatter on their marketing fiasco.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Although there are a surprising (to me at least) amount of people out there who wouldn't consider a Yamaha because they only "buy American" but have no 2nd thoughts about a Fuji Poo or a Suzi Cat.

Back to the topic:

I had an edge XC 500 and really liked it until I totaled it. Even for a heavier guy, it had good power for not having power valves. That sled was fun to work on also, as everything was laid out nicely in the engine bay. My wife's family also had an edge with the Fuji 488 and the power was quite a bit lower than my XC500. The Fuji was great on the trail but a little short on the railroad grades.

Hoosier - you're absolutely right. I love my 500 on the trail but it lacks quite bit on long straightaways. It's holy sh- - fast from zero to 70 and around corners, but from then on it's a dog.

My kids rode a 2000 45th aniversary 500 with the laim Gen 2 chassis and the fancy pants air shock. Liked the colors. Sold it years ago. That sled was pre powerless valves. Laim duck.
the 2001 800 XCSP no valves edge was the cats a**.

Kind of confused by this. I bought a 2000 45th Aniversary 500 XCSP new and it had exhaust valves. When the valves kicked in it would go like a Bat out of "H". Easily the fastest 500 I've ever ridden. I also had a 2002 EDGE X 500 with V.A.S. and I know for a fact that the 45th would run neck-and-neck with it. Besides, I guess that deep down I'm a fancy pants kind of guy.

In a twist of irony, I've re-acquired the very same 45th and am really looking forward to riding it some this winter. Yeah, the styling has been compared to a Kubota lawn tractor but hey, it's quickly becoming a classic.

I have to believe the 500 Liberty with V.A.S.has to push 100 ponies.

A 2000 Poo in any motor did NOT come stock with VES. Variable exhaust valves. Polaris did not have them in 2001 either. 2002 was the first year. The 2000 had a genII chasis and the 2001 went to an edge chassis for the 500 liberty and kept the GenII for the fuji that year. Then they called it a triump which was a short lived transitional sled. It got real confusing with the 2000 to 2002 indys because of the huge motor and chassis combinations.

I think you are mistaken on this. The 2000XC 500 came with the non VES motor standard but the 45th anniversary special had the VES motor, so did the 600Xc in 2000. I was working at POO at the time and I know for a fact that a couple of guys I worked with had the XC500's with them while I had the standard XC500 without them.

PR1, you're a hard man to beat. Thanks for pointing out the fact that I don't know my "A's" from my "E's" (yes, it was V.E.S. not V.A.S.). V.A.S came out of somewhere but for the life of me I can't remember where.

But I'm still confused. Attached are some photos I just snapped of my 2000 XCSP and it has exhaust valves. Is this a terminology issue? Sorry to be a pain but I don't want to be the source of bad information.

The "Triumph" was the old XLT motor stuffed into the XC chassis, they had to use up those they had laying on the shelf, so into the XC they went.

I will look into it more closely. My 2000 45th anniversary 700xc did not have valves, My 2001 800 xcsp did not have valves, my 2003 700 RMK had valves. My kids 1999 500 fugi of course did not have valves. It would of had to be one of the many versions of the first liberty 500's if that is true. Now Poo is known for putting the advanced tech for the time on their bigger motors first. same with chassis. I will have to use my "Phone a friend" (brother in law) on this one. I suspect he still has his 2000 45th 500 in the barn, he could be a Poo dealer with his collection.

Looks like a stock install to me??? kinda confused on the blue end caps on the valves, only seen them in black or red. The VIN # should tell a dealer if that is the correct motor for that sled. I would call. Mean time I am in full investigation mode! lol Not to confuse matters but in 96 Poo had EFI sleds out.

That's what I love about this site. The members will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of things :)

I do know it is the original engine. Even though it hasn't always been at my place, it has been in the family since I bought it new. Maybe I have a real "Special Performance" machine.

Let us know what you find from your "Shout Out".

BTW, I also had a 99 XC 500 without valves. Ran like a Swiss watch and the person I sold it to still rides it every winter but there was a world of difference in power. Still, regardless of real or advertised horsepower, if you're looking for a solid, reliable engine I think the 500 Liberty is right up there on the list.

Suspicion Abounds! Sounds good in the video though.

I still have the orginal Polaris lineup booklet from 2000 (the 45th Aniversary was on the cover). I had forgotten about the Deluxe versions.

When I get home I'll take a look and see if there are any spec details. I'm actually supposed to be working right now - although there are no witnesses here today to confirm this.

Alright doubters. Time too put this to bed. 2000 xcsp 500 HAS V.E.S. the base 500 does not. Go on the pol. parts web and see fo yo self. I KNOW .I OWNED ONE. I also outran A LOT of bigger engines in sleds. Hence the term GIANT KILLER, the sled was also named UNTOUCHABLE for reasons that may implicate innocent people.

Found the VES page on Poo parts at the PolarisIndustries.com web site. I will eat crow.

I'll bet this doesn't happen often. Likewise, I confirmed the V.E.S on the technical data sheet in my 2000 booklet. In your defense, it shows no V.E.S. for the 600 and 700 Deluxe.

Also found my original purchase agreement which shows an out-the-door price of $5640.

Going way back to the original question....horsepower ratings are interesting but the real proof is in the performance. There's not much satisfaction in having an engine rated at 120 HP that runs like 80.

Well just shows I am human and not some computer generated response, lol. I had the 700 Deluxe for 2000 (non ves) and quickly sold it for a 2001 800 (non ves)with edge chassis. Back then I was in the Ricky Racer stage of life. I do remember putting the 800 non ves up against my brother in laws 02 800 with VES on the Magpie reservoir and was not inpressed with his at all. so for 03 I bought a 700 RMK with VES and it did okay. Most versatile sled I ever had was an 05 Poo switchback with a lowly VES600 that kicked butt. A fellow JDee'r now owns it.
