Yanaha24, thanks for report...kinda what I figured. I'm gonna pull plug on it not worth beating up my new sled on **** trails. 6&1/2hr drive north for me as well. Maybe that moderate to heavy snow John is forecasting for SE WI will give me something to play on in the farm fields before it melts.

It's bad. We knew better but did it anyways part of the game I guess. I have never been up here when it was this bad.

Called Vansville and the owner said based on rider reports going out of Hancock North or South is ****. From Calumet to Mohawk it is **** too which is what you guys ran into. Mohawk north is good with snow depth and will be grooming tonight again. So it sounds like based on that report if you don't mind trailering to Mohawk or Vansville there is riding to be done. That's the report I got. Also heard south Range to Mass is still decent snow cover. That's the story I got. Call some locals to verify though.

X2..... same report I got. I know the report from krupps is they were going to groom last night and try to break up ice layer from melting and rain on top of base. I will report tomorrow when I am on the trail. Nice to see a little layer of some fresh LES on the ground on the webcams this a.m. I know its not much but better then nothing

Rode yesterday out of south range north to Copper Harbor. Getting through Hancock was brutal westerly route through town. Soon as we got out of town was plenty of snow on trail, flat and hard as a rock. Scratchers would have been nice. Came upon a couple brain surgeons who decided to drive a Jeep and 2 place trailer down the trail to retrieve a broke down sled. Got off trail and bad stuck. Called tow shop for them. Wonder how that went $$$. Got better and snow loosened up as temp warmed up. The reroute south of Mohawk was snocross approved for about 6-7 miles. The rest of the way to Copper was beautiful. Little bare in spots on top of Brockway but that's kind of the norm.
Snowing some and blowing like crazy this am.

Sonsaditches Is there a base left on trail 3 from south range to bridge? Planning on coming up Sunday and staying at D's Basecamp and was wondering about our trail options to ride or do we need to trailer sleds to ridable areas. reassurance needed, thanks

So, are you saying Calumet to Mohawk is ok? Total contradiction to what was said a few posts up?

There may be a few spots that would could be not good between Calumet and Mohawk, especially just south of Copper City, but from the road crossings, there is still plenty of snow between Calumet and Mohawk. Actually, once you are out of Hancock, then all is pretty good. I cannot comment on 133.

I drove down to Houghton yesterday and took some pics of things in and just outside of the towns.
Here is the trail through Hancock. Pretty much down to the road grime.

The trail heading through $Bay is snowcovered, so if it were me, I would go that way!

Here is on the Houghton side, along canal drive.

I did not take any other pics because I honestly thought that other than it being old and frozen snow, there was enough to ride. Getting some fresh now. Probably 2-3" new since last night, a couple more today and an inch or two every 24 hours the rest of this week and weekend.

I do not get into the "is it worth it" game. That is up to each individual. But thought these would help.

Calumet to Mohawk doesn't appear to be getting groomed. Not sure why not. That section seems to always be given less attention, but right now it doesn't appear to be getting any at all. It's really rough. The reroute around Mohawk at the north end of the section is a train wreck - long stretches of bare rock and large gravel. The reroute is no one's fault really, just unfortunate.

On the positive side, conditions and grooming north of Mohawk are what you'd expect - great. Some downed debris due to the wind, and a few bald spots on Brockway, but considering the recent weather the trail conditions aren't that much different from prime season. Tons of good riding to be had.

Also, as you'd probably expect, town riding is totally bare concrete/asphalt, so getting gas and going through via trail (Gay, Copper Harbor, Lac La Belle, etc) is sucky.

BTW my comments are strictly in reference to Calumet and north. No idea on Calumet and south as we've just avoided it due to the Portage Bridge to South Range reports.

You are welcome.

Lucky me gets to go to Houghton again today! So I will take some shots of the crossings between Mohawk-Calumet-Hancock. I talked to a few that rode much of the system north of Mohawk (except 133) yesterday and said nothing was ugly. Just old, packed snow. Groomers are out, so that should help.

Ouch, that stuff is looking pretty ugly. Some fresh snow on top of that may make things ok, but i think it will need a good 8" +

Exactly the reason why I just like to provide pics and let folks decide for themselves. A few posts before your someone said: "Pics are what I thought trails would look like. Looking forward to getting back on the sled tomorrow". No one is right, no one is wrong, just different perspectives. It's what I love about us all!

Going north on Trail 3, north of Mohawk. A few trees blown over here and there.

One of two groomers we saw, one after the other each doing half the width of the trail, just north of Mohawk on 3.
