Illinois IPass Transpoder Info

Hello Everyone,
This is snomoman & my 1st post to this site. Having being an avid snowmobiler since 1981, I've been always interested in what everyone has to say here.
Onto my topic. I went in the the Tollway building (In Illinois) to get a new transponder since mine wasn't working. I asked the clerk why everytime I went on a snowmobile trip, My I-Pass account was always being replenished. To my surprise, Whenever you haul a trailer, they charge a crazy high amount. I figured it to be a 487% increase from the standard transponder 2 axle toll.
As an example, 2 axle transponder toll at Aurora plaza - 75 cents, 3 axle with transponder - $3.65 Talk about being robbed!!

Welcome Snomoman.
My only experience was to roll thru your wonderful D. State with a trailer a time or 2 at the cost of an extra $60 or so....D. Utopia ain't cheap is it?

Darn. I apparently have been gifting this crooked state hundreds of dollars over the years towing my boat and sleds. I have to fix this immediately.

Upon further review, this information is false, as far as I'm concerned. I have the same transponder I've always had. During my last trip up north, I was charged the rate for a "medium vehicle" which, according to the Tollway website, includes a passenger vehicle plus a one or two axle trailer. I always go through Ipass lanes, so somehow it knows I'm pulling a trailer. Basically it cost me almost twenty bucks to get from O'hare to the Beloit border. The only thing I can't check right now is to see what I pay with no trailer. I don't have any recent trips without the trailer so the website doesn't go back far enough.

I get charged $.95 to go thru the S Beloit toll without a trailer. For comparison, how much is it for you with a 2 axle trailer?

It's cheap. $4.65. One axle trailer and two axle same price. I have one. Devon ave $3.65, Elgin $3.65, Belvidere $7.35, S Beloit $4.65. Total $19.30 one way to border from O'Hare area. And people complain about trail passes. LOL

I was just told by the IPASS customer service people that as soon as you hook up any kind of trailer and pull it on the tollway that the transponder price is no longer in effect. We get charged as though we didn't have an IPASS account. There is no way around it either. All the transponder does for us at that point is save us from having to go through the manual lanes. It's the same price either way.

That state is a corrupt mess! Glad I was able to leave back in '02! Sometimes I think WI should get on the bandwagon and install tolls to make up for some budget issues but then I don't want it turning into another Illinois......

My oh My have I stirred up a hornets nest here. I went to the tollway headquarters (2700 Ogden Ave., Downers Grove, IL.) last Friday & talked to an actual Tollway employee about the 3 axle transponder. NOT a person hired by the tollway to take calls. He is the one who gave me the 3 axle transponder. It is blue in color.
Sincerly,

Snomoman the normal ipass transponder is all you need it just charges you full price for all tolls when your pulling a trailer and discounted price when not towing.

The Blue transponder is for semis and gets no discount either towing a trailer or not.

Auto's only are available for the discount rates.

For the sake of everyone who has voiced an opinion about this topic, I am going to test the system & find out for sure. If i'm wrong,I will be the first to admit it. It all boils down to me getting a 3 axle transponder registered to my account by a tollway clerk last Friday. I am going to pickup my snowmobile from the dealer soon. I live close to the Aurora tollway Ipass lane. I will use the blue transponder going westbound, get off on route 31, do a U turn, replace transponder with the white one, go through the eastbound Aurora Ipass lane & see what charges are added to my Ipass account. I will post my findings.
Sincerely,
snomoman

Have to run them both at the same time to get a honest price , just secure one on each side of your Windshield

WOW, the State of Illinois not educating its workers on how the process works and telling customers a different story each time...no way! oh wait, that's exactly how Illinois works. No wonder people are leaving Illinois in droves....this coming from a guy living in Illinois.
