knowing how cold it is in ak why in the heck do they all wear those open helmets with low drop goggles face mask combo and not full face with e-shield theres no way anyone could ever convince me thats a better setup when temps there app -50f u see in pics some have put duct tape on face to prvent frostbite thats just an inconveiece when racing and ductape can freeze just the same u can stay way warmer in a ful helmet

when it gets really cold my heated shilds can ice. when working hard and doing some heavy breathing in sub zero the party is over even with gogels some times.I always carry 2 pr 1 on the face and a diff color in gogel bag staying warm and dry under hood

Attack 06, I asked the same question a few years ago. The helmets look better today than a few years ago.
The reason for the open face is to make it easier to work on the sleds, eat and drink, all while keeping the helmet. I'm sure you noticed that all the sleds have big windshields. Tall windshields help quite a bit. The riders also use guantlets when the temps drop. They often ride in temps around the -50f mark for part of the race.

The open helmet may be colder, but keeping the sled moving is what helps win the race.
