Is it safe to travel to Cancun Mexico?

I have finally narrowed down our family vacation to an all inclusive in the Riviera Maya or Cancun area to an 'all inclusive". Now my wife tells me that she has heard that area is unsafe to travel, that the violence from the border is spreading to popular vacation areas like Cancun. I have heard that if you stay in the hotel grounds that we should be safe. It may be a bit unsafe to go on excursions.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

My wife wanted to go there and I said no way. Then again I am in law enforcement so I may be a liitle paranoid. However I have heard of cartel shootouts in tourist cities. Besides why not spend our money here in the states. Just my .02

Why not do an all inclusive in the Caribbean, like St. Lucia or something, and just avoid the potential problems in Mexico?

I have personally avoided Cancun because it is a larger town. Just go a little further south to Playa del Carmen area.....more of an Old world Mexico down there and in my opinion much nicer.

We have been to Mexico probably a dozen times, the most recent being in March. I would go to Playa de Carmen/Riviera Maya again and just stay in the resort. I would avoid the city of Cancun also but then again I am a little paranoid also. I would also avoid all border towns.

Enough american currency goes across the border as it is. Spend that money here!!! The # 1 source of income in mexican familys is from the states, husbands, boyfriends, fathers, sending most of their paychecks over the border.

Been to Mexico once in my life and WILL NEVER GO AGAIN !!!! Stay in the states go to Hawaii and spend your hard earned money here . From what I heard most of all the tourist money goes to the drug lords down there and they don't like us Americans They just want our money . Also in some locations down there I'd want to keep my head to lots of beheadings down there to ALL FOR DRUGS!!!!! Just my 2 cents worth The tourist towns only show you what they want you to see If you go off the beaten path your in a whole other world and it isn't good

When we go we stay around Playa del Carmen, Cancun is a little too big for us. We have never had any issues at all. The crime in that area Mexico is really pretty low, most of the people in the area are working so when people work crime is lower. If you do go and leave the resort be smart about it. I would not go out at night. If you stay at a nice resort there will be a lot of activities to do and you really won't have to leave.

Last year we did a few excursions and we did not have any issue with those either. Most of the resorts have tour people on site that can help you book your excursions. The excursions that I have done include transportation and lunch. You are always in a group and with your guide.

It is just my opinion but I think that you will be fine. If you have questions talk to a travel agent and get there input.

I have not been to mexico in 2 yrs but I have been to Cancun cobo Valletta and have always gotten a jeep or something to drive around and have never had a prob people are people and the majority of mexicans are good people.the border towns are a diff story.I have been way more sketched out from the people in the Dominican Republic and a few in Jamaica than in mexico.but then allot of people think you will get killed just walking around in a city like Minneapolis or Chicago or Detroit and I have never had issues in any of those kind of places ether.it is all in your attitude if you look and act like a mark you will be a mark

Per capita some of the most dangerous places in the world are in Detroit and Washington D.C.. Not going to Playa or Cancun because of violence and safety would be like saying, "I'm not going to Disney World (Orlando,FL) because of all the murders in Detriot!?!? We love going to Playa, Jamaica and Dominican because we love the beach and the people. We'll be in Playa from 2/24 - 2/28 and can't wait!!

liv2ride, we’ve been doing Mexican vacations for years. Married in Nuevo Vallarta and have hit most vacation towns along the west coast. Puerto Penasco, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Ixtapa/Zihuatnejo, Acapulco and the list goes on. Our folks live in Tucson and we still drive down to Nogalas for lunch and shopping. We've only done Cozumel Island on the east coast years ago. We've traveled the mountains from Mexico City to Acapulco. From a seasoned Mexico traveler, the drug lords have the border towns in a shambles. Only visit those during daylight hours and you'll see the Federallies in armored trucks with black face masks and semi-auto rifles. Don't go there after dark. The smaller coastal vacation towns live by the tourist and are doing everything possible to make sure the industry is kept in tact. I do not know Cancun, so I can't give you advice there, but the tourist areas of the west coast towns are reasonably safe. Very few incidents. We will be in Puerto Vallarta in February and Daniel our condo owner (who lives in Tepic) tells us things are "safe". Last year we did a mountain tour toward Gaudalajara and found ourselves in a small town guarded by AK-47's - Never again will we go off the beaten path.

My wife and I just got back from Cancun last month. It is very safe as long as you stay in the hotel zone. Going to old Cancun we were told is not as safe.
Just go and have a great time.

use the Trip Advisor website and do a litte research. You can go into "travel forums" and read all kinds of information on this topic. Trip Advisor is the only site you need to research a resort, area, see pictures, etc. Good luck!

Hey can I get in on that deal!
I will gladly be the Canary if someone else is paying.

I better try the beer and tequila too, just so you know it’s safe.

If I had to ask or have doubt think I would change me plans.

Excellent point!! Why go if you are worried about it! Go somewhere else and enjoy yourself. Have a vacation, relax, that is what they are for. If you are worried the whole time about the crap then I wouldn't call it a vacation. No need to work up an ulcer....

I'm with the others, keep your money here in the states.
