Kids these days

To bad kids don’t want to work any more these days….its such a bummer. I was looking for some kids that would want to make some extra money over spring break thought it would be no problem….wrong…..Made 10 phone calls and only found one little 12year old who said he’d come and rake. He’ll probably quit by this afternoon, lots of raking for one kid…maybe he’ll surprise me…but 10 phone calls probably 12 kids involved and only found 1 kid couldn’t believe it.

It's not the kids, it's the parents. Picking them up from school in their SUV's on a nice sunny day when they could walk or take the bus. Tossing them a 20 or maybe a 50 so they can go to the mall with their friends, with no work related to the payout.

I know several kids that are super hard workers. They come from parents that are hard workers and know the importance of passing this along to their children.

Two boys helped me stack firewood this autumn, worked like beavers. I could have never made all my wood before my surgery without their help.

I had another high school senior come and shovel off my woodshed roof this December when it was about ready to collapse. He could only come on Friday because that was the only day he had off from his job at a local garage, in addition to making great grades with AP classes.

It's too bad that more kids are not being taught by THEIR PARENTS the value of hard work. Then again, look at the mess we are in right now, why would one expect anything different from the adults.

ya that is sad....they are going to have one heck of a rude awakening when it comes time to start paying there own bills.

John..you hit it right on. I do have to say though...I may be rubbing off on my daughter. She is in speech therapy and we got a not on the teacher is so amazed at how hard she will stick with it and work on something, so much so, that they are thinking of putting her into more of a classroom setting, so that is cool.

It really is to bad. I made some sweet cash helping neighbors with lawn work as a kid. I bought my first sled with my own money from cutting a few neighbors lawns all summer only to find the next winter my buddies parents either bought them one or gave them a hand me down sled. (nicer than mine) Funny thing is they are all 30 years old and some are still getting help and hand me downs from mom and dad and claiming they bought it on their own.

Don't you just want to tell kids to pull their pants up, put their hat on straight, stop texting and pick up a damn rake?!

I agree, the blame goes to the parents. Part of the problem is too many parents let technology babysit their kids; cell phones, video games, dvd players in the cars, etc. The cell phone problem is especially bothersome, why does every kid absolutely need a cell phone? So they can text each other in class? Get their Facebook updates? Parents need to teach their kids not only good work ethic, but activities that are more productive and healthy than pushing buttons.

Indy, you don't count, other than spending too much time on here , we know you're a productive and creative kid.

Ok, I'm off my old man (not really) rant...NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!

ok, I just remembered my dad gave me a 50cc mini bike/mechanical baby sitter when i was 12. It didnt run and he told me if i couldt get it going i could ride it all I wanted. Well i got it going and just destroyed our lawn riding it around the house. Thats probably how i learned to work on stuff. And if I broke it i had to fix it cause dad was NOT going to know how!

Right on!

I live a block from the high school, so I get a daily dose of this. Just about every kid that walks by the house, either going to school or leaving, has a cell phone stuck in his/her ear or in their paws texting. What I don't understand is, they're probably talking to or texting somebody they're going to see in 5 minutes or just saw 5 minutes ago!

I sure hope to pass that work ethic on to my 2 boys. From the time I was able to lift a stone or a hay bale, I was helping nieghbor farmers. Now there are not many little farms left in my area, but I will find something for them to do. They already enjoy anything they can do to help in the shop. Hard workers are in the wifes genes to, so they should turn o.k. But I agree with the rest of you, kids these days just don't have to do much. They get to many handouts and don't have to work for anything. And John is right, it is the parents fault. Time to wake up America.

They're probably texting the kid walking next to him/her. That way they don't have to use up texting energy from talking to each other.

John hit it on the head. I have two girls and I am amazed at how many parents spoil their kids and give them what they want. I am very fortunate to be able to afford certain things for my kids but my wife and I chose not to give them things without them working for it. Of course we provide them with food and clothing but if they want a pair of jeans with holes already in them, they pay for it. If my older daughter wants to drive somewhere she must fill the gas tank. If she goes out to eat with friends it is with her money. When she went to college we told her we will pay for part of it and she must work for the rest of it. My wife and I feel that if we payed for everything then there would be no value in it. She never buys anything unless it is on sale or better yet on clearance. As it turns out, my daughter is one of the hardest working kids I know. She works full time in the summer and part time at school. All while taking a full load of classes. She is on the A honor roll, is a tutor for a biology class and is on pace to graduate in 3.5 years with a nursing degree. Ok, I sound like a proud father and I am. In fact she was home this past weekend and said that some of her friends applyed for certain scholarships and they ended up getting them and not my daughter even thou her credentials were as good if not better. The thing that got her mad was that these kids have their whole schooling payed for so they plan on using the money to go on spring break. The only thing we could tell her is that life is not always fair but that her hard work will pay off in the end.

I know a few people not working cause everthing is slow. I'm sure the would rake your leaves if they lived closer.

I know when I was a kid I jump at anykind of work offered. I had my first real job at 14 working at hardware store. My parents did not give me any money or fancy toys. They always said if you want it that bad you will work for it.

Sad, but there's a good chance it's true. I've seen kids (actually, young adult family members) texting each other from across the room! They were smiling and carrying on normal conversation verbally, but carrying out an argument via text. WTH?

Sad

A LOT of great comments here.
I owe Everything of how I became to my folks.
(even my size),.. LOL,....("you'r NOT leaving the table
until everything is clean",.....But I'm full Mom!)
Don't forget this also,.... when did your kids "change"?
,.......When they were introduced to OTHER kids.
Oh well,...
You good parents out there,... I commend you,....
It is tough.
Keep up the good fight! Hopefully they will appreciate it
when they are older.
Technology sometimes is NOT used for the good.
Made even some of us adults "Lazier",....
I was brought up in the "No Child Labor Law" period,....
But man,... washing dishes at 14 got me my first sled at 14 also!
HARD WORK PAYS OFF!

NOTE: (just think of the problems the "texting" generation will have
with their health in the future,... curved upper spines,... carple fingers,....)
and thanks to Obamacare,...we'll all be paying to fix it! :)
