LCD Or LED TV?

I was all set to buy a new LCD 46-52 inch TV for a bright room with lots of reflection so I called Direct TV & they said current DVR will work with a new Digital TV so I was good to go. Plasma is dead TV technology & I was thinking LCD just pick my size & brand & peel off the lean green & take 1 home. Seems like LED TV is coming on in a big way but not sure if LED is pushing LCD out like LCD did to Plasma. LED TVs are more expensive than LCDs but not sure why more $ & if LED is better TV technology or just new a trend & LCD will hang in there? What is my best choice & why?
Thanks,
whitedust

my favorite tv's are the ones that turn on and work ;) we have 1 20" lcd and a 32" flat screen with the big ole thing behind it along with a dozen other tv's, no fancy ones, but they all turn on so i can watch slednecks :)

Whitedust -- to the best of my knowledge (and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong), LED TV's are nothing more than LCD TV's with LED backlighting, as opposed to regular LCD TV's which use fluorescent backlighting. The LCD screen is common to both versions.

As for which is better, I haven't a clue -- I still have a tube TV!

I just went through this whole scenario last Feb, I posted on here to about it. Now a LED tv is better tech and harder on the wallet. I have two young boys and was advised that the LED is more easily breakable. I found that what I wanted 50 inch-ish the LED was slightly out of my price range. I ended up buying a 52" sony bravia eco edition. To make a long story short, if you fall asleep and there is no movement in the room for 30 minutes it will shut off. It has only turned off once that I'm aware of. Now with the money I didn't spend on the LED, I did go buy a new stand too.

Here is a pic of the set up, this is from a few months ago.

Whitedust,

I'm not an authority on the technical differences, but here is what I learned recently while changing my TV's from the old 150 lb. 35" screen Sony bravias.

There are differences in the back lighting. I don't really know what difference it makes in real world viewing. LED's are slightly thinner and lighter.

I will say I thought I would never see a better picture than my Sony Bravia XBR5 40" LCD that is around 4 years old. Well, then I bought (without even going to see one in person...risky) a Samsung UN40C7000 and the picture is stunning to say the least. I trusted my regular salesman at the dealer I use. The people on the screen move in such a lifelike manner (not sure what frame per second) it takes a bit to get used to. I know it sounds weird, but you have to see one for yourself to understand. I also have a Pioneer Kuro Elite 62" plasma (their top of the line) that's a couple years old and I thought that had an excellent picture, but again the Samsung is at a whole new level. The Samsung is 3D ready and when I bought it there was a deal where they threw in a free blu-ray player. Here's a link to a list of the LED TV's I was referring to and where I buy them.

I hope that helps

We should talk

Just got through with this, you will hear a thousand different opinions.

As with anything, to some extent you get what you pay for, you can get that price up in a big hurry if you are not careful.

Pay attention to:

• Resolution 1080p (what you want)
• 120Hz (minimum) 240Hz (better but not required)
• LED (Backlit preferred but side lit still ok)
• LCD (great but not as good as LED, LCD probably not going away soon)

Wal-Mart type store - great prices, economy models, TV are still pretty darn good.

Higher end stores – prices are higher but models are nicer, like I said you can get carried away quickly.

I have both for weird reasons, both new; the LED has the superior picture, but the LCD still rocks. The only real way you can tell the difference is if you can compare them daily. It’s all in how much you want to spend on a TV, just like with sleds, the $7000.00 model will take you the same place as the $14,000.00 albeit with a little less comfort, and a little less power.

p.s. the brand name does mean a lot, same as it does in sleds, lol.

Forget LCD/LED. Get a Plasma!!! 240 hz can't compare to 600 hz.

Do some research on avsforum and you can get all the nitty gritty. But to make a long story short you can't beat the new plasmas.

Look at the Panasonic VT25's. Best 2D AND 3D picture I have seen.

Plasma is out? What do I do with the 50 incher in the living room? It's like a yr. old. Are TV's getting like computers and cell phones? I found that Panasonic makes a heck of a nice 1080p in a 50" plasma for cheap at Sears of all places.

I agree on the Panasonic VT25. I have the 42" G25 Series. The picture is very nice. But...the Samsung is better. I have both and am buying another for my lake house and I'm going with the Samsung.

From my experience, I like the LCD over Plasma. The plasma has way too much glare from windows. The picture is good though.

I upgraded from a 42" Vizio 1080p LCD (60hz) to a 46" Sony 1080p (120hz). The difference is uncanny. Before the 1080p Vizio I had a 720p Samsung. There was a huge difference there too.

I've read reviews on the 240hz difference from 120hz and they say that it's pretty much unoticeable to the human eye.

I know that your post is LED vs LCD, so I have to plead ignorant on the LED. I just know the difference between LCD and Plasma.

We just bought a 46" LCD over the weekend. Found it intereting though that the salesman said the longevity of the plasma's now-a-days are just as good as the LCD's.

For sports and movie watching, I'd go plasma all the way. The lifespan for the latest generation plasma is 60k hours which is the same for LCD. I'd only go LCD if the room has A LOT of bright lighting. I have two of each and prefer the overall picture of the plasma.

Check out CNET...their two top rated sets are Plasma...The LED mentioned above (Samsung UN40C7000) is a very nice set as well.

For true picture quality... Plasma > LED > LCD

Whitedust...if you are into HD, get the Plasma. If you don't care about HD, get the LCD.
I have LCD's, and the brother has the plasma with HD, and it's incredible.

But whatever you do, stick with the latest Samsung technology. IMO, they rule the market for computer monitors and high def TV's. All the TV's I'm talking about above are Samsungs.
The LCD I have sitting in my cottage in some pretty cool weather and it's been fine for five years.

Do some more research...... Plasma is far from dead technology. Especially for sports, or for that fact any fast moving movie, sports, gaming, etc... The LED, LCD's can't keep up and you get crappy motion blur. I just saw a side by side compare last night between LED, LCD, and Plasma.... no comparison, Plasma spanked both. The longevity on Plasma and the "burn in" isuues they use to have are not an issue like they use to be. Don't count out rear projection for the cost factor, still really good HD, especially if you get towards a 60". I have a 6 year old rear projection in one room and a 120hz 60" LCD in another room and the rear projection is still better IMHO. If you are going to get this TV and not get the HD box and feed (or over the air HD with an antenna, which is best HD quality you can get) disregard all above comments, SD on anything bigger than 36" is crap on any television compared to getting HD and Blu-ray. Good luck and enjoy!

LED is the way to go. At least between the two that you posed.

I bought a 47 inch Vizo LED and the thing is simply amazing. LCD's are very good also and the differences in quality may seem suttle unitl you stand directly next to both of them and study the "differences".

Regardless of which you pick definetly go with a 240hz or higher (six months ago they told me the manufactures werent to far from stepping it up even further).

Just my experiences
