Let's Kick the Smoking Habit

I saw last year's post" How much weight did you gain", very good response on this. Many JDee peeps supported this. So I am starting this post.
I lived in a house with both parents smoking. I said I would never start. Told my Mom if she would quit smoking, I would not lay in the sun anymore( this was in the 70's) So, in the 90's I met my Hubby, he was a smoker. I never smoked, but some times when I had a beer, I would light one up. Just because??? Then that how it started. Both my parents died of smoking, ya think I would have learned. So now a pack is over 6 bucks, we both smoke, add it adds up! I have been in this nasty habit for 15yrs, hubby more than 30 yrs, we have tried before to quit, but now I am ready, not because of family history, but the $$$$. WOW I could buy a new sled ( but I love my sled), but the money we would save would be great. I am not going to tell Hubby to give it up, that is his choice, but thinking that he sees how much we are saving by me not smoking, well, that's his choice. I have always been a slim person, I am not worried about gaining pounds( 5,9" 123lbs), just need to get up in the am and not sit and have java and cigs. Sitting on the computer will be hard and not have a smoke, but I will have to adjust. Any body out there that wants to join in? This might sound strange to some, but when the dogs come out of the bedroom in the am they are sneezing smellling the smoke!
Any input would be great!

Go For It!

I'm not a smoker, but Lenny's "did you get fat" thread was great for me. I often wondered if someone would start one for smoking and I hope you have a core of committed people join together and try to kick that habit. I know having the JD family to report back to kept me accountable and gave me incentive to be successful.

Good Luck!

It will be 2 years in january for me. Gained a bigger belly but my fiance calls it the "love hump".... I did take chantix for about a month. I took it my own way though. about half the dose as they recommend. No side effects that way. I still believe you really WANT to quit otherwise it will never work. Brand new 2012 Pro-R 800 in my garage!!!

I quit cold turkey in August and it was not as hard as I thought. After a couple of days, you more or less forget about it. The urges diminish as time goes on but last couple of days on the trails were a bit tough. Everytime we pulled over I was thinking about having one.

I quit about 5 years ago. Still get the urge to have one from time to time. I had quit 2 times prior and each were over a year smoke free. One drunk night in the bar and one bummed smoke later I was back making up for lost time.

I just know that I can not take a single puff ever or I could go back. Even after all of this time.

I quit cold turkey. I think the last final time I was sick which help to quit when every drag feels like it is going to kill you.

Some thing I found that helped me a lot was rolling some special replacement smokes. ;)

Will Power.................... Good Luck All!

I'm 44 and started back when i was 15. I quit 9 yrs ago but only to start and quit a couple of times. I've been quit for about 5 yrs now. Yes its hard for a couple of days but the urges do get less and less. I did not use the chantix but rather my doctor prescribed me wellbutrine which is also used to help with depression. Worked great for me. I quit for health reason, so Good Luck You can do it.

I didn't go "cold turkey", BUT in the last 3 days I am down to half of my usual intake. Usually in the am, then by afternoon, not a one. Gotta start somewhere.

day 6 no smoke

Way to go! Keep it up and keep checking in, that's what made me accountable in the "fat" thread. What you guys are doing is a lot harder IMO than the diet deal. You need this daily check, there is power in numbers so bond together.

I took last two weeks of Dec to cut back about 75% with a few smokeless days mixed in and then have been smoke free for 6 days now.

LoveMyDobe, looks like you've got the start of a great thread going here. I bet you can all succeed with individual strength, some team support from people around each of you at home, and the encouragement of the JD Nation!

Down to 5 or 6 cigs a day. Having my morning 3 now, still a good start.
Haven't had a drink tho, that's when it will be hard, but maybe beer will taste better(not that it taste bad ever) Having to go outside at the bar will help, too cold to stand and burn one.
Hubby bought 4 packs yesterday, see he went thru 1 and 1/2 yesterday. Hope he realizes with me not opening a pack, he knows how much we are saving. I don't open a pack for me, just snag a couple out of his pack. Took the ashtray away from my recliner, that really helps at night watching tv. Sleeping better too but can't wait to get up in the morning and have my java, internet and 3 cigs.
Hope to hear how everyone else is doing. In the past I used Chantix, couldn't wait to go to bed so I could dream about people I hadn't thought of for awhile, not using it this time, it was a waste of money!
