When we built our cabin it was about 3 3/4 hrs from our house. Then I changed jobs and now its only 1 3/4 hrs from the house. Much nicer!

2hr 45mins from home to cabin - 1 stop (tiny bladder). Like someone above said if it's too much further than that, you might find you dont use it as much as you'd like.

2 hours 15 minutes/157 miles to Higgins lake Mi from Clarkston. I live 2 miles from I175 and the cabin is aprox 2 miles from I75 as well.

Its the perfect amount of time having 2 "restless" kids. I wanted to go farther but the wife's logic prevailed.

It is short enough to make day trips if necc and far enough to get to the snow and the atv trail systems, not to mention being only a mile from Higgins Lake.

The freakin traffic and construction on I75 on holiday weekends is another story....

Takes 90 minutes for me to drive to 'da cabin. In an average year, we spend roughly 60-70 nights at the cabin (we rarely go anywhere else on vacation).

If you don't have a specific location in mind, my advice would be to keep the time under 4 hours (2 is better).

Any longer than that, and you will likely not use it enough to warrant the expense.

If it takes 6-8 hours to get there, you will only likely go a couple times a year....at that point rent a place....its way cheaper.

Figure out the number of nights you would be able to stay there in a given year, and then divide the cost of buying a place by the number of nights.....it ain't cheap!

This may be true, but there is something about being able to go whenever you want and having your pillow and toothbrush waiting for you.

2 hours on the nose! Like other posters have said, it's the perfect drive time. In fact I like to stay on Sunday nights durning the summer and drive to work from the cabin. My wife has her summers off (teacher) so her and the kids stay extra days here and there. 3 days of work and I'm headed back!

356 miles Arlington Heights to Phelps ( 6 hours ) The dog always needs
to stop in Oxford to do her thing. Without her 5 hrs was the quickest.

I have been an owner for 15 years and still take tons of crap up everytime I go. The comments about keeping the drive time to around 2 hours is wise. I read an arcticle in the detroit news around 1997 and they had stated the average drive time for cabins in Michigan was 2-3 hours and the average user went 5 times per year. I blew that average out of the woods by only missing 2 weekends all last winter! When fuel prices jumped it was considerably more difficult to sell properties with big drive times and the under 2 hour properties have fared better in a rough economy.

3 hrs from the house to the Cabin in Longville. Wish it was closer but after seeing what some on this site have to drive, I'm feeling lucky.
