Planning a trip in mid to late Feb . I was looking for somewhere different . Possible ideas , Manitowish waters , Presque Isle ,Boulder Junction , Land O' Lakes Watersmeet. Any info on where to stay and how trails are depending on the snow! 4 to 5 adult. Like to be able to head north or south depending on mood weather conditions. 3 night 2 day trip. Thanks
How is door county snowmobiling?

One of the things that makes sledding so great in the U.P. is the mountains and terrain. It isn't just flat and the pull-offs for scenery is worth the longer trip. Lake effect snow along the big lake also pretty much assures that your late Feb trip won't be a hit or miss on snow depth.

I have been all over the place and the Huron Mountians make midwest sledding great, and I prefer areas like Munising, and Big Bay because the crowds are less and the trails are well groomed. People friendly areas make all the difference too. Let's not forget about some good eating establishments too. If a sled breaks down over the trip, can you get it going fast or have to travel long distance and hope Mr. X is open....

Take a camera and stop and take in the views...then post them here for the rest of us landlubbers to absorb.

From the area you mentioned, I would suggest the Great Northern in Mercer as your base. You can ride all day in any direction from there. Many good places to eat in the area. The motel has a bar/restaraunt. Has always been a favorite of mine.

I like the Boulder Junction area for variety. You can head north through Lando into Michigan if you want. East will take you over to Phelps, south to St. Germain and Minoqua, west to Mercer and Hurley or southwest to Springstead area. Depends on how many pit stops and sleds you want to see. My favorite would be the Bouder Junction Motor Lodge. Clean and quiet and within walking distance of good food and beer. Good luck and safe sledding!

You could write a book on this....frankly not sure why someone hasn't on the where to stay, where to eat, and where to ride. Obviously it is all subjective to what you like and how much that you want to spend.

For beginners, try trailering to Marquette where there is lots of nite life and places to eat and where the pick isn't just a tavern or two. Lodging there can fill up so be sure you phone ahead.

Then trailer one day to Big Bay and ride the mountain trails there. Then the next day go to Munising and ride around over that way. Make sure you stop some to smell the roses...and check on places to stay for the next trip and then save the info for the next year. Going to new places is always fun and you can go each year and never hit the same places twice.

X2 on the Boulder Junction area. We stay at the Boulder Bear Lodge (great owner! Always treats us super). Only con is too far to walk to bar/restaurant, but gas is right across street. Very nice area, can go all 4 directions. Try "Gooches A-1 Bar", just north of town, great pizza!

I have rode around Gwinn. It is close to my home town of years ago; Ishpeming. Gwinn does have great trails and you can ride to different destinations from there. Marquette is north and further is Big Bay. Ishpeming is west and Munising east. However lodging is limited. There is a motel in Ishpeming that has a pool and shops and I think hot tubs. Bowling also there. If you are riding as a family this may be a better choice.I think it is called Country Inn? I also just stayed at a place called the Birches in Springstead Wi. they have a nice bar/lodge with game room. Good food and nice cabins and a small motel. Again great for families and Keith and Bonnie are great folks to rent from. Good luck and safe sledding!
