Lost a friend tonight

Our family had to say goodbye to our Yellow Lab tonight, he was 18 yrs young and still wagging his tail. Very hard decision that took us about a year to make. His health really slipped over the past year but we just could not bring ourselves to make the decision. We will miss you Buddy! I hope you are enjoying chasing pheasants in the next life and the pain of old age is past you!

Hard to believe it hurts this much.....

Putting down a good friend really.....well......sucks! Had to do it a couple times for different reasons, but when it's time to end the suffering and misery, it's time. We have to do what's best for them, because they don't have the means to do it themselves. Sounds horrible, but we can't keep them around for our sake. Sorry for your loss.

dc,
We're facing the same thing before long. Our Yellow Lab is 12 and the arthritis in the shoulders and hips has taken it's toll. She still manages her daily walk but the stamina just isn't what it used to be and I've noticed her personality has changed somewhat. Her daily Meds have helped manage the pain but we realize that time is getting short. We've had "the discussion" with the vet to know the protocol and options, we've got a place picked out for her and I'm probably more prepared then my wife is at this point. Tough call to make no doubt about it. As with any family loss, it'll get better as time passes.

Sorry to hear the loss of a family member. 18 years- WOW!! You were blessed to have that long with your friend.

We are 2 months in on a 19wk treatment chemo protocol for our Hailey. You would never know she has lymphoma now.

So sad to read this

I always hate it when someone here post this kind of news. I went thru the death of my fur kid a year ago and it does help to have the support of fellow dog people.
No longer in pain, you did the right thing.
You don't get over it, you get thru it.

lvr1000, glad your Dobe is doing well, amazing what can be done now for our kids, Give Hailey a bit hug from us

18 years is a very long time for a lab to live, but still not even close to long enough.

Hang in there, time will ease the pain, but never erase the memories.

Pet's are family members to many people and losing one is like losing a family member.

Our dog passed away at home after battling spine cancer now 11 years ago. In a lasting tribute to her, we had her creamated and had Adirondack Pet Urns create a painted portrait on the oak urn from a picture and put her ashes in it and we always have her urn and collar where ever we have lived. While our daughter was 1 at the time she died, she still talks about Shadow and she is still with us if only in pictures and memory.

www.adirondackpeturns.com is the website and others do similar urns as well.

This is such a hard thing to deal with and hopefully the responses will make you realize that so many people on this site understand what you're going though. Support is an important thing and believe me, people have really thought about you and your family tonight. It's OK to grieve.

...Hard to believe it hurts this much.....

No it isn't!

From the first moment they wiggle their tales and whimper at you....they worm their way into your heart and then you are hooked.

Over time you realize that the day will come when you will have to gather every emotion and every strength you have to "do the right thing".

You prepare yourself as much as possible, and then the day comes, and you realize that you haven't prepared enough...because your heart has been drop kicked and bruised and like tossing your leg off in the trash, you wonder NOW how you could have been so ill prepared for this moment.

Turtles live for 30 years or more...elephants live for 80 years....and love birds can live for 30 or more....and we pick out something that provides us with pure joy only to have them "leave you" in the shortest period of time.

We are either dumber than a door nail or we are gluttons for punishment.

Having done this half dozen times, my last was in January and as you might be able to tell I am still hurting....and as LOVE says, you don't get over it, you only get thru it...there is a hole in your life now...and we dog lovers understand perfectly what you are going thru and know that we sympathize with we you for what it was worth...but we must all bear this burden independently in the final analysis.
