With unemployment where its at i find it hard to belive there is a lack of skilled trades people. Years back my union predicted a shortage of electricians and took on big classes of apprentices for 3 years or so and here we are 10 years later with 100's of electricians out of work for years. But they still take new apprentices every year and guess who's allways working because there cheaper? So why would we need more trained people in industrys that are saturated allready?

I allways find it funny as 1 generation points the finger at the other. Kids are young/lazy blah blah. But i have to ask when you see a job post for a Experienced commercial electrician for a pay of 12-18 a hour or a liscenced plumber for 16-20 a hour are they expecting gold for there Dirt?? What people get are generally a direct reflection of what is being offered.

The age old saying a Happy worker is a productive worker holds true to this day.
When was the last time somone paid very well for there work said yeah im overpaid so im going to slack today or show up when i can.
Yeah didnt think so

Dead on. There is no shortage of skilled tradesmen. The problem is the "skilled" are being weeded out, and replaced with those damn "lazy kids" who will "sort of" work, for half the money.

Talked to my guidance counselor about the Youth Apprenticeship for CNC machining today. He sent an e-mail to the shop and I'm going on a tour there in a month or so. Don't know how I'll like working 2 jobs and school but it seems like a great opportunity. Hopefully I get accepted/hired/however you want to put it LOL 6am-10 am at machine shop, school from 11am-3pm and fleet farm 5pm-9pm 2-3 times a week plus every other weekend. But like you guys said, they pay for your school, 5 years into it you are making $20+ an hour. Can't beat that, plus its something I'd be proud to do...

Funny part is, he told me to visit him towards the end of February to talk about it, I couldn't wait! LOL My guidance counselor is a pretty good guy, and really pushes manufacturing to anybody who shows a little interest in it. I have a buddy I work with at Fleet in my department, he's been doing the youth apprenticeship since september, he has a full time job lined up the day he graduates, and has his schooling all lined up for next fall to be paid for by the machine shop. Can't beat that!

Yep your right, I went to college, earned my own degree, got a job that didn't pay what I was promised, worked hard, got laid off due to the economy but yet still managed to pay my mortgage by working crappy jobs and kept working towards getting back in my degree field. Now some people I went to school with that mommy and daddy bought them everything have really nice trucks, boats, sleds, wheelers etc, but they live with their parents and complain. I am not blaiming my parents for me having everything I have, I am blaming ALL parents of the "bad" generation. What do you think hippies rebelled against? hard work and a steady paycheck?

and OMG? you must be younger than me to use that kind of language.

No I am probably older than you 47, just have young kids at home. So OMG is spoken often. They have their friends over a lot and they all blame everyone else for everything, kinda like Obama.

You're right you are older than me (I am 28) and I apologize for the comment, it was stupid and shortsighted.

What I'm trying to say is that not all of my generation is lazy and stupid. I didn't know about work release until half way through my senior year so i couldn't do it. I know the older generation likes to blame us and I like to blame the parents, but if you (not you as in someone inparticular) are blaming us for the problems, isn't that like us blaming someone else for ours?

I fully believe in this country to be successful I have to do the work. Whether it be in manufacturing or trading stocks, nobody is giving me a free ride. I think the opportunity Indy500 is taking is worth every penny, even if he doesn't get a full time job, the experience and training are worth it.

kuddos Mike, We live in a burb of Chicago, and have a home in Phelps Wis, this goes back a couple of years, but our youngest son wanted to go to high school up north, so my wife spent 4 years with him, we sent him to Phelps High school, he aced autos, wood shop, and crafted the art of welding. Placed very well with welding skills at Nicole college, and skills across USA all via Phelps school. He is now welding his tail off in southern Florida. You could not get those classes here in snob *** suburbs of Chicago. Thank you to all the under paid teachers of the Northwoods.
