Minocqua/Mercer

We have a trip planned to Minocqua for next weekend and from all the reports it sounds rough. Any info on the area would be appreciated. May end up moving the trip north.

Just got back last night. Was in St Germain area Tuesday - Saturday. Go north. Wasn't too bad till Friday when traffic increased. If they get the 5 inches accuweather is forecasting, that probably would be enough for a bit. Lots of thin trails with rocks and logs. Farther north we went was better. Don't remember logging being quite this heavy in the past either. Usually not that bad on trails if there is enough snow but wow......like riding on a gravel road. Hope this helps.

durphee; My friend has a place up by Manitowish. He's up there now. I talked to him Sat AM, and he said it's ride able, but very thin. They need snow. I will talk to him Mon, and if any different I will post it here on your thread.

Thanks a bunch! I'm heading with a group of 10 for our annual trip and we're just concerned if we have to ride somewhere else a group that big makes it hard to get hotel rooms. Keep me posted, I appreciate it.

Rode from Lando to Hurley today. Not bad at all except for 17N out of Mercer. They must have lost the key to the groomer. ...

I thought the same thing but south of mercer was just groomed and was good. Its very hit and miss to find a good trail near mercer. The snow is very thin. hard on carbides but still enough for cooling. Hurley has at least another foot.

I never ride the grade past Fri early morning or its always a washboard. We crossed 17 last year on a Sat afternoon and stopped at wolf den, watched the groomer go by, left 30 min later to take murry landing rd back to flowage and you would have thought it had been days since groomed. 17 gets way to much traffic fri/sat and always sucks.

I wouldn’t cancel. Take extra carbides and keep an eye on them. There are plenty of great trails. Just need to head North. Find my posts in Mercer thread and PI thread. One good snow will make all the difference. We were lucky there wasn’t any traffic last weekend. Everybody was grooming, the trails were smooth, there just was a lot of rock and snirt mixed in some trails. The plowed roads really suck. So pick your trails carefully you’ll be fine.

Stay off 17 (the grade) between Mercer, Pine Lake and Hurley, and you'll be fine. Lot's of trails to the east/west that get you north, just takes a bit longer.

You don't have to take extra carbides if you're running the good ones to start with. I've got over 10,000 miles on my Bergstroms and I guarantee not all of those miles were on stellar conditions...

We rode from Minocqua to Sayner, over to Conover and up to Land o Lakes. Decided to head up to the Casino in Watersmeet. The trails were in very good condition, worst was the run from Lando to the casino. The snow they got today was groomed and trails in surpsingly very good trails, best I have run all year.

I have 3 to 4 inches in lac du flambeau (it drafted a bit, hard to get accurate reading)...we had a good base, added some ice with freezing rain yesterday, with snow on top...i will be out riding later today (i want it to warm up a bit..its 4 above right now).

Seriously? The trails were this good in Vilas? How would you rate the base/snow depth on the trails? I presume you took 8, or 6 to Lando, but if you can tell me what trails you took it would be helpful.
Were you clanking rocks off your carbides? I might just head up if it's really that good.

You can't ride it in June or July. Head up and ride.

Have some friends in Mercer and they said overall trails were good yesterday with fresh snow. Better north and west I was told, but again not first hand knowledge but I also trust my buddies.

Don't abuse my equipment in low-snow conditions. I doubt they're that good where I'm starting on - 70W, 4 mile W of ER. They didn't even groom it last night, although the rest of the system was.
I'll wait.

Yeah, I will. Have fun burning up your cheap equipment. Wash a few corners out for me and slide into a birch or 2.
