Overnight trip from Phelps/Conover, where to?

I was riding a gas pig back then Polaris Classic 600, it got 100 miles out of the tank, or about 10 mpg so I was always getting to the gas station and putting another full tank in. Always topped off whenever I saw gas too. My riding budding was always riding newer machines, the newer they were got better mileage. Now with my Ski Doo 900 4stroke I don't worry like I used to!
That trip I took 12 years ago, I was on an 05 xc 500 and my dad on a 99 xc 700. He got 8-9 mpg and I got 10-11, and the oil lights came on around 150 miles. Definitely got worrisome at times riding in that area.

Probably sidetracking the thread but…One of the loops that I absolutely enjoy is …
From sidnaw take 8 west to trail 107 ( a little hard to find this turn, but once you find it, you will hopefully not forget it in the future)
107 is an awesome trail with beautiful big pine trees as you wind up and down hills through them, 107 runs into trail 2, which you would take a left on towards iron river, (stop for a tank and tummy if needed) then head back westward on trail 2, then head north on trail 15, this trail is not for the faint hearted. approx 45 miles of everything a snowmobiler would want and dream of, (straight aways, twisty tighty, and lots of beautiful scenery). then back to trail 8 east to sidnaw. It’s approx 100 miles of snowmobile heaven
Hopefully this could be included in your plans

That's the exact route we take every year multiple times. They are usually great to ride and never really packed full of sleds. Beautiful scenery too.

To expand a little. We leave Florence on 2 heading west to Iron river. Top off the gas, then west to 15 then north to 8, east to Sidnaw, top off gas again if necessary then take 8 east then head to L'Anse for lunch at hilltop. Gas up after lunch and head back to Sidnaw, top off again then 8 West to 107 as you stated and back down to 2 and back east to Florence. Usually a great day's ride. Highly recommend it.

ok, thanks to everyone's help we are not doing an over night trip. I think our wives are happier!

Plan is as follows:

DAY 1. leave North twin - Phelps - Iron River. Iron River to watersmeet. Watersmeet back home.

Day 2 North Twin - Watersmeet head west on 2 to Begland/Lake Gogebic. Back down to Marinesco. Marinesco to Lando. Land o home.

Does this seems reasonable?

What are good spots to stop for lunch or warm-up?

Thanks!

Day 1 Nelma the Habit, Iron River The Wooden Nickle, Watersmeet the casino, Lando whatever all bars / grills on Main Street all on trail look out for signs.

Day 2 Watersmeet Rogers Bar, I don’t stop in Bergland any more but Root Cellar is good. Again many in Lando, also have Dublins on North Twin actually Conover

Yes routes are very reasonable no problems except big whoops in Swamp on 6 leaving or entering Phelps but no big deal maybe 1/4 mile. I don’t ride North Twin anymore too boring.

One thing I will also strongly recommend, be prepared to change your route if the trails get bad. Your east ride should be good but depending on the day Watersmeet to lando can get a little rough by afternoon (and I groom this trail) but high traffic can take it’s toll on it. Also Lake Gogebic has been real hit and miss this year with more misses, not completely their fault they have had a lot of groomer breakdowns for them this year.

Do you think we would be better off reversing the route? Head up to Watersmeet then east to IR?

Is there is a gas station close to Habit or Brule River Tap along/near 6 without going to Iron River? We rode up that way recently and maps/signs on trail didn't indicate anything. We headed back towards Phelps after lunch but was curious for future.

Gas at the Habit other option is the convenience center in Phelps. Can divert to Whitetail gas in Tipler too,Iron River loaded with trail gas stations.

We are beginners and two of the couples will be renting sleds
If the sled rental dealer is in Wi, I would verify that their sleds are allowed to be ridden in the U.P. Planning a trip from Wi into the U.P. on Wi rental sleds may not be feasible...And all this trip planning is for naught...

So another big question weekend or week day? Which may have been said already stated and I missed it. If week day I wouldn’t worry about reversing the direction and also what time do you plan on going out earlier the better. I do like the go through Wisconsin first then come back on the railroad grade to Watersmeet in the end route because if getting tired it’s an easier ride to finish the day.

Friday traffic builds as day wears on Saturday is always the heaviest traffic day just have to deal with it. Traffic always better east. Not anything you can do about it except check on your weaker riders see what they want to do.

The Root Cellar is good on Lake Gogebic but other options are the new AJ's Walleye Lodge. They have a beautiful new log bar and restaurant. In Bergland, and my favorite place, is now called Trailside BBQ and Brew, fka JW's BBQ and Brew.

Most people run the lake, so typically, trail 13 on the east side and trail 1 on the west, are pretty good. I avoid Saturday's like the plague.

Friday and Saturday
So as Whitedust said big thing is get up and going early, people roll in on Friday ride late then sleep in so Saturday best bet up and on trail by 9ish and be prepared to change route if need be and it may be as simple as taking one different trail and everything gets better. And in the few days leading up to trip try to get current trail information things change day to day and week to week.
