Power valve help

Looks like i won't be running ves gold oil. Check out these powervalves! The springs are rusty, the bellows aren't torn but I'm assuming I should replace them? The blades aren't magnetic, is there any way to figure out what kind I have? I think the springs are so rusty and weak that the blade goes in and out to easy and makes the chattering noise. The reason I took them out in the first place is because I wanted to get rid of this noise because i was pretty sure this is where it was coming from. Pistons look great thru the exhaust ports btw and have 120 psi.

I've seen that before...when I WAS running Polaris VES oil back in 2003 on my 700 Polaris. Switched to.....you guessed it...Sea n Snow...and the problem went away. Replace the bellows and springs and start fresh. Don't get too aggressive cleaning the blades.

I would still like to know what type of blades I got. I got a lot of the carbon off with a razor blade, was VERY careful to not put a knick in them and didn't at all. I'm replacing the springs since they're easy, but how do I get the darn bellows off? The nut on there is TIGHT! The metal on my blades has a gold tint to it. I'd like to confirm they are NOT aluminum. Anybody know yet if these are magnetic? I know a lot of you have powervalves! The funny part is the guy claimed he cleaned them. Pff yeah ok...

Light wire brush is aggressive as I ever got. NEVER used a razor blade...people I trust said even a wire brush is too much. They can get gooey in a season, but it it seems that 2 years was the most common.

If nobody else chimes in I'll see if I can find out what they're made of. I'm pretty sure it isn't aluminum. Titanium maybe?

Polaris made 3 different kinds. Aluminum, titanium, then stainless steel. Stainless steel is the best but titanium ones are decent. I have a feeling they're titanium. Are the titanium ones known to "click" or "chatter"?

The (3) different "flavors" are exclusive to the 800's

The 5,6,7's are ALL HARD ANODIZED ALUMINUM.(That's the gold/brown coating on them, scrape that off and guess you're down to bare aluminum)

ORANGE bellows are the latest and greatest from POLARIS

The rusted springs may be a result of water, snow coming in through the vent hole and sitting there.

Oven cleaner makes cleaning the valves a bit easier.

Don't forget to clean the bores.
Wrap a shop rag around a 1" scraper, soak it in lacquer thinner, brakeclean, run it up + down the bores until clean

I tried to return your p.m., it won't work for whatever reason???

Have any ideas about the ticking noise? Could it just badly need a cleaning or possibly new springs? The valve is not hitting the pistons. The valve has carbon on the end of it and no scratches.

red locktite if the bellows aren't torn run'm

So tomorrow I should go get new springs, work on getting them even more clean, and run em? I gotta get the gaskets, they half stuck. I gotta get clutch guard pin, and maybe a clutch puller. My parents think it's their decision whether or not i'm putting my ripsaw on here. i was like ***? It's just because i take up THEIR garage apparantly for too long :)

Indy,

I just did my 700 this year after 3000 miles and I was also using VES Gold, I had a torn bellows thats how I noticed the problem, the dealer sold me a can of Mercury carbon cleaner that worked great. that with some carb cleaner and a little scraping it was like brand new. I also put the new orange bellows in and it runs strong, I was told the VES Plus is the latest formula and is suppose to be better, I'll let you know next year.

" but how do I get the darn bellows off? The nut on there is TIGHT! The metal on my blades has a gold tint to it. I'd like to confirm they are NOT aluminum. "

I took the nut off of my powervalves by putting the blade in a vise and then u can use a closed end wrench to take the nut off. I forget what size it was but thinking around a 3/8 or so. I just replaced the blades on my 04 switchback because one broke. The replacement blade had a flat side and a side that had some cut outs on it. The one that broke had flat sides on both. I got mine off babbitts and it had the original part number and the number for the upgraded/replaced blades. My sled is an 800 so like the other poster said it may be different for a 5,6,700 sled.

The pic here is the top of the powervalve correct? This is how they were when I took them out but I would've thought they'd go in the other way.

I remember them only going in one way...but my memory aint what it used to be.

And I think another poster said that the blade was heat treated aluminum with a gold anodize coat. I thought they were all titanium and the 800's were different in some way.

I'm leaving now (not going riding though...wife is working...grr) but I'm just asking...why is it so important what they are made of?

FWIW, I use polaris blue. Never had a problem. I had to replace bellows once, but I have 7400 miles on my sled to. I clean my valves at the beginning of every season. Thats it. This year has been a bad year, low miles(appox 2000), but usually I get good miles on. My sled is 3 years and one month old, and cleaned them 3 times. My sled also gets plenty of idle time too, I never touch the throttle till at least 85*. I use approx. a quart in a 100-125.
