Procedure For WI 2015/2016 Snowmobile Registration?

Effective July 1, 2015, snowmobile registrations will cost $30/3 year from the current $30/2 year. My WI registration expires June 2015..... Does the WI DNR send the registration automatically to my home as they did in the past or does CapStep now have Clubs responsible for WI registrations?

Pete,

In the March issue of WSN ( Wisconsin Snowmobile News) they have a great article titled " trail pass quick facts" which outline exactly your questions.

The March issue — should be available on line (click →) here next month. (It seems the current issue is not on line until the following month.)

Anybody know about 2015/2016 WI sled Registration or do I wait a month?

I was told at our last club meeting to wait until June or July. No rush, it will be 9 months until trails open. That's sad if you think about it!

I've got a copy from the March issue of WSN in front of me and I still need a lawyer to explain it. But I'll give it a try... just promise not to kill the messenger.

Starting April 1rst Registration will cost $30 for three years. It sounds like nothing changes if you have a current one, the state will send you a note saying "send us your $30.

Trail Passes will be $10 and available On-line at dnr.wi.gov, at any DNR Service Center or authorized agent. I'm assuming we'll have to prove we paid the Registration before we get the Trail Pass. You'll also have to be a club member and belong to the AWSC to qualify for the $10 fee.

...and for you guys looking for Bold New Graphics, the Trail Pass sticker measures 3 inches by 3 inches and must be displayed at the bottom center of your windshield.

Legislation is pending to exempt Antique Snowmobiles, 35 years or older.

The clubs are not responsible for your registration, or your trail pass. After July 1st, register your sled for $30 for 3 years. If you are a club member and an AWSC member, your yearly trail pass will be $10, and available through the AWSC office. You will need to provide proof that you are a member. Your AWSC member number is on your AWSC card and on the address lable of your WSN magazine. If you are not a club member, you can get your trail pass through the WI DNR.

Vintage sleds will be exempt from a trail pass. There is some work to be done on combining the Vintage and the Antique law. Give me a month or so, and I will update you on that also. It is still a work in process.

The only way to get the trail pass for $10 is directly through the AWSC office. You will have to pay the full $30 fee if you get the trail pass through the DNR or any of the registration stations. Also you will not be able to have a receipt as proof of payment if you go through the AWSC. It is highly recommended to buy early in advance of the trails opening.

Keep your eyes open for info on vintage sleds registered in a different state too.

That part sucks! I have multiple windshields that I switch out depending on temperature for the day of riding. Now what?

This is because once you join a club, your dues have to get processed by the club(when the club volunteer gets to it) and then the AWSC
before you will get your membership number.

There will also be a bit of lag time in getting your trail pass because the AWSC DOES NOT distribute the discounted trail pass itself,
it only notifies the DNR that you are a member and qualify for the discounted pass.

Your trail pass...discounted or not.... still comes through the DNR.

Currently our club distributes the membership cards at monthly meetings. We are working on a better club website .....at additional cost to the club..... and that might then be a quicker way to post up new membership numbers as we get them.

I think the biggest diff will be for those who impulse buy a sled when the snow flies and want to ride immediately. If they aren't members they will have to either pay the full $30.00 rate or wait for membership to get recorded to get the discounted rate.

So I am ready to join a club in the Green Bay or surrounding area to get on the AWSC list - any recommendations? I also have a vintage sled and looking to avoid as much cost as possible. 1 or maybe 2 uses per season doesn't justify a $30 trail pass.....

Club choice is up to each individual.
Personally i'd join one where I knew a few members...if not, simply join one in your vicinity and bring a few sledder friends along if you can!
As far as vintage sleds go;

From the WSN magazine....."Legislation is beiing introduced to exempt snowmobiles registered as antiques (35 years old or older)
from the trail pass requirement."

Best case scenario is you join a club an then pay a lousy $10.00 for a trail pass....best part is...if like this year, you got no snow ....you save the money for a trail pass.
