Pros and Cons and Comparisons of different places to ride in the West

Carter Sez.....

Riding and learning about many different areas is important. Finding ones favorite place comes from all this. Turbo trips, cheap trips, peanut butter and jelly trips, prime rib trips, GUIDED trips and we don't need no stinking guide trips, all have a common thread, and that is riding.....Some guys can do many and some can do only one out west. Its how you see it. My first year in the mountains as a tourist I saw the absolute value in having a guide. Jerry Bell taught me all about the primo ride in the primo area and we never got farther than 5 miles from the lodge. With my head up my rear I would not ride anyplace but Tog. Then I did and the mistake was mine. Two great riding areas 2 hrs. so of Jackson and oh my god what a great place to see and ride. You guys have seen way more areas than I and all this helps Firecat guy say "guided or I'm not going", Cuss staying on trails, Wayne falling in love with the concept of guided and safe and guides doing the worrying and so on. The sport benefits. We all need to remember that variety is the thing. I can't imagine doing a trail ride. I live in the mountains. I can't imagine living in the flat country and not trail riding cuz riding is what it is all about. Stop pounding on each other.... we all love this thing and can't get enough. I will tell you this, when you can go deep and never loose your way and never fear about returning and never fear about gas and know in your heart that in a blinding snow storm in 2 feet of fresh snow you WILL be back for happy hour has a value. To all of you who support me and ride with me and I with you, I salute you. It can't snow soon enough. Jackson Hole 88degrees today...

Nicely put Carter! Didn't have the chance to meet or ride with you on our trip to Tog. We were hitched up with Nate. Great time and experience all around. I wouldn't hesitate to connect with you or one of your counterparts out there again to guide us!

Your absolutely right about Carter. He's as happy as pigs in **** when he is out riding. Disney world at its finest! Carter, I always think about that tumble you took late last year and the sled recovery the next day. I call that place the "The don't know, I won't go" hill. You know I was the hold out on that one. Great memories.

Tech, its actually so. of Afton. Think about doing a sidehill for as long as you can hold it. I mean it... your belt goes soft first and loss of power drops you before the hill runs out. places there at least 1 mile or more on the side...Its decieving because you have to travel 18 miles in before the fun starts. Its one of the reasons I balked at going there for so long. "Why do I need to ride 18 miles on a trail?" My buddies cuffed me to the truck and away we went. Got there rode the 18 miles and was stunned at what I was looking at. Now the thing that buggs me is I can't get you guys there. Tog. permits don't work there and to have you leave Tog. to ride there 1 day is 2 1/2 hrs. drive one way. And I can't legally guide. But yeah, what a place. Then there is another 30 min. so of Jackson. On a blue bird day oh man... Wayne, don't let one fall get you down,... LOL First chance I get I'm back there to reclaim that hill. I'm bringing ski brakes...LOL Just so you know it goes from 77 to 65 tomorrow to rain all day sunday with SNOW above 9000 ft. Thats right SNOW...Tell you more later...

I'm bringing ski brakes...LOL

By the way, your use/explination of the ski brake was an "aha moment" for me while riding out there with ya. One damn good idea! A set WILL be going in the tunnel bag next season. Yet another reason to set yourself up with a GREAT guide out West, the things you can learn are priceless.

Now that you caught it, lets work on something. i have a set of plastic chain brakes. They are lite as can be and fit in a backpack. The loops are 1/4 in plastic and 1 1/2 in. long. 18 loops are a good length. Use a metal spare chain link with a screw in to connect the 2 ends. Now the problem, I'm not sure its the right thickness of plastic. I've used them 1 time as a test and I'm not sure they created enough drag. Tried to find a thicker plastic and a bit bigger loop and failed. Then went on line and found plastic chain but thicker means almost $1.00 per link. Or $36 for a set plus links and shipping. Not good enough. Considering a used belt is already paid for. You are the engineer, got any Ideas? last resort can be a belt brake. What else is there?

ya i know CARTER....i was just coming back at em for saying i was 16 and trying to fish me out and see if it was BS.....didnt work....plus i dont use the trails but to get to the play areas same as ya'll do....i was meerly suggesting in the PROS and CONS comparisions thread that there are different things fun to do out west than just climbing hills all day long....which is fun too....so are switchbacks at full speed into a 180 degree turn with a 2000' ledge on one side for pucker effects....and FIRECATGUY.....i can and have done the ISLAND PARK AREA....YELLOWSTONE...BITTERROOT RANGE....LOLO MONTANA....IDAHO......those pics are not of me but from that area to show the dude how deep it can be and smooth on the fish creek fire road i was talking about is fun that noone does.....i would have to go home and scan some of my pics from tours to post here, but i assure you, your not the only one capable of riding like that in those areas....tag...your it....no bashing here CARTER just pointing out different stuff to do out west....evidently he gets sore about DIAMOND POUNDING.....you go CUZZINOLAF....pound away dude

He doesn't get sore, its just that the whole world wants to pick fights and no one wants to listen and everybody's opinion is the only opinion. If we can all share in our passions for this sport on this link then its one safe place to come to. You can see by Pat's blogs he rides other places. He found a very special kind of riding at Togwotee, and he is good at it. Wants everybody to share in that be it personal or on the web. Good for him and all of you doing that. Save snomobiling and all its special juice, no matter where you ride, leave the other stuff on TV. Now, it just snrained or hailed and rained and covered the lawn. Almost went and got my ride out...LOL

I'll look for some other solutions. What size links was the metal chain?

We're gonna check out what the hype is all about this season in April. We'll figure out dates and book. Can we make sure we get you as our Guide, Carter?

Yes to the guide thing. There is a big but........ Togwotee Lodge closes in early April. Usually around the 3rd or 4th. Last season we closed Mar. 23rd due to low snow and conditions. How does that fit in an April trip. Also, last season it snowed 7ft. in April after we closed. Do you come and stay in town and drive up every day? If you make it to TOG> I'll make it happen.

We might have to make it late March or that first weekend of April then.... Let me talk to my crew and see what is up. Worst case we trailer up or stay down at Lava if the lodge has closed. If I do this I really want the whole package so we'll see.
