From what I recently observed bars, restaurants and lodging were doing very well in the U.P. I tried several places to get lodging for someone and nothing was available on the day they wanted. I tried Krupp's Resort, Omer's Resort, and Park View. There are a lot of ORV's in front of these places when I recently drove by. ORV-ing is becoming a very popular sport.

The reason I used "past tense" is Gov. Whitmer just laid the law down on the U.P. again. It appears she doesn't like the spike in covid cases in the U.P. https://www.uppermichiganssource.com/2020/07/29/covid-19-restrictions-to-be-tightened-in-upper-michigan/

Houghton county, 21 new cases since July 4th. Almost 36,000 people live there, how high does that go in the summer with all the tourists visiting? 39 cases total.... where is the spike? Whitmer is a complete idiot. I'm starting to think Midwestplayer is the snitch that visits places, and if he sees someone breaking the "law" he calls the health department.

You know why they are doing very well? Most free Americans said FU to the witch, we are going to live our lives, regardless of mask police like you.

Lets hope as the fear mongering and doom and gloom media continues that Whitmer doesn't require self quarantining before crossing state lines when the white gold season for the north woods returns. Hospitals in our beautiful state no longer sharing numbers claiming an anomaly in the numbers, I'll take bets that once they start indulging numbers once again that they will me made to seem as if it is even worse that they had thought. Results of survey released also on in person school... 58% parents wanted "in Person" schooling to resume, did the survey twice didn't get the results they wanted so they made the decision themselves, people demanding answers. I do have to laugh, where we have our seasonal trailer there is a teacher and a paramedic that are there most every weekend, teacher very adiment about not returning to school, says she doesn't want to get sick, I so want to stop her and ask, so you don't want to go back to school so what are you doing here with people from who knows where, with who knows what, hanging out at pool, down at the band and you are lucky if you see one or two people wearing a mask, and if you are afraid of getting sick.... where is your mask? but we all know the answer to this, so why bother.

You tried to find lodging for "someone else", or for yourself? You claim to be a Yooper, but I don't believe anything you say. I suspect that you live in downstate MI, or maybe even Chicagoland.

I was just hearing on the local Chicagoland news that if we travel to Wisconsin we have to self quarantine for 14 days, but if we’re only there for less than 24 hours we don’t have to self quarantine, go figure out that silliness

The 14 day quarantine only applies to travelers to or from WI to the city of Chicago starting Monday. It does not apply to workers that travel from WI to Chicago or Chicago to WI on a daily commute. It’s unenforceable and stupid more of a pita than effective to prevent Covid infections. Why mayor Lightfoot instigated this stupid restriction is baffling to me since it is ineffective and makes her look foolish!

I have lived in the U.P. longer than most folks on this forum have been alive. In fact, my entire life except for a 6 month span have been in the U.P., and during that 6 month absence I found a wife and brought her back to the beautiful U.P.

My parents lived in the U.P. their entire lives. My grandparents lived in the U.P. their entire lives, and my great grandparents came from Europe in the mid 18 hundreds and lived and died here.

My grandma was born in 1879 in Hurontown. If you are not a Yooper you probably never heard of the place. My grandfather worked the skip to bring the miners up at a mine between Dodgeville and Hurontown. After just bringing up a load of miners, he had a heart attack on the job and died. Again if you are not a Yooper you probably never heard of Dodgeville. My mother was born in Winona, MI. If you are a snowmobiler, you probably heard of this place as trail 3 goes right by it.

And speaking of Snowmobile Trail 3, I was riding inspection on the railroad tracks over the Firesteel Bridges when a snowmobile trail was still a pipe dream. When I was in college I had a summer job on the railroad section crew. It was a very interesting experience. Before the train left two people rode in a truck that could go on the rails or road to inspect the tracks. The end of the line was Lake Mine, but if you are not a Yooper you probably never heard of the place. Well, what else do you want to know?

I'm too darn old for any toy playing. I would probably kill myself. I remember many, many years ago I took my brother's motorcycle for a spin. I believe I was at the bottom of Beacon Hill returning from Freda and I took a 90 degree turn too fast. I think the road was gravel at the time and I was an inexperienced rider. In order to not wipe out, I had to go in the other lane to take the curve, fortunately nothing was coming in the other lane, but after that I gave up on motorcycle riding.

Here is a picture of where I went to work when I had a summer job with the Copper Range Railroad. This was located at the bottom of Van Orden’s Hill. You can see the round house in the photo and the old highway. Van Orden’s Hill was a terrible road in winter with many curves. table.jpg

By the way, I personally knew Bill Nicholls who has the trail from Houghton to Mass City named after him. I went to school with his son. Come to think of it, the first time I was on a snowmobile was in his yard and we got his ski-doo stuck in the snow.

You had a summer job with the CRRR? When was that? That photo looks to be ca. 1974, as they were about to remove the steel turntable.

I can't remember the exact year for sure without finding an old resume. It was around 1970. The railroad closed in 1972 and it was at least a couple of years before they closed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper_Range_Railroad

The guys who worked on the section crew were some real tough guys, but I liked them. I remember when I first started working there they would load up a large water can for drinking water (probably at least 5 gallons) and put it on the truck before we headed out in the morning. There were actually two cans available but they only usually took one along. Well, come lunch time my hands were dirty and I wanted to wash them before I ate. So I opened the valve on the water can and gave them a good washing. Boy, did I hear it. I was using their precious drinking water for washing my hands. I thought they were about ready to kill me. After that it was my job to fill both water cans in the morning and put them on the truck if I wanted to wash my hands. I got teased about washing my hands because nobody else ever did, but as long as I took both cans along there was enough water.

We were allowed a half hour for lunch. After eating we would rest for 10 to 15 minutes in the truck before starting work again. Well one day, a half hour was up so I got up to start the afternoon shift, but the supervisor was still resting and didn't get up yet. Okay, I heard it again from the guys. Don't get up until the supervisor gets up first. You stay put until he gets up. Another lesson learned.

Here is a picture of some of the guys I worked with.

Bill Siltala was the crew supervisor(second from left). He was a crabby old man, but knew his stuff. Wilbert Anderson(third from left) was younger and was the general supervisor. I got to ride inspection with him a few times. The other folks I can't remember. I think Toivo(4th from left) also worked on the section crew and was a good spiker. LaBissoniere never worked with . He was the train engineer.

Just got back from Maine, you have to wear a mask anytime you go in the stores or restaurants but once you are in, you can take them off????? COVID is relatively pretty non existent up there, but the one thing I noticed was all the Massachusetts and New Hampshire license plates, I dont think anyone is concerned about COVID except for the people that are getting the extra $600 on unemployment. (several buddies around me are on furlough, making over a $1000 a week, and enjoying the summer)
