Ride Experience of a Side by Side

As you can see I'm from Wis. We are renting a house late July on the east shore of the peninsula just north of Leland So we can spend some time with the grandsons/Daughter Etc.
Considering bringing the RZR??? Are there any established trails in that area or maybe over towards Petoski?
Id LOVE to try this thing out on some dunes!

Where exactly are you staying? East Shore of the Peninsula north of Leland confuses me....sorry. LOL

Sorry my bad. I meant West shore of the Leelanau peninsula Our rental house is 1/2 mile or so North of Peterson park. I believe that makes it about 1 1/2 miles south of Leelanau State Park. right on that tip of land that juts out into the lake. Sand dunes everywhere but riding is understandably not allowed. Its one beautiful area!

You won't be able to ride it in Leelanau County, they don't allow them on the sides of the road. The closest legal place to ride is Kalkaska and that's not close. Unfortunately don't have much of an option for a close legal ride.

Thanks for the information.
I just realized I am hyjacking this thread. I hate it when folks do that.

Looking for some input from you guys who have side by sides. Is it what you thought it would be? Is it better than you thought? Was a waste of money? Would you do it again? Does the thrill compare to sledding? Just putting some feelers out there, I'm thinking real hard about one, but never riden in one, yet. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

To get back to the post. Here is a update.
As I posted earlier we took a RZR 800 (50 inch WB) for a ride and the wife and I had a gas. Well to make a long story short I traded in a sportsman 800X2 that I loved along with my wifes 600. Both were in near perfect condition and we now have a RZR 900 White Lightning in the garage.
I thought I would have buyers remorse as the RZR900 is pricey even before you start adding winch/windshields/doors/top/grafics etc.
Well.... This time that didnt happen. The RZR800 we drove was a gas. The RZR 800S is a vast improvement over that. However the RZR900 is over the top.
This thing is the most fun you can have in summer (with your clothes on) The ride is incredible! The power is awesome. It is without question worth the extra ching$$ This thing rocks!
We have 160 miles on it and WE LOVE IT! My wife actually has more time behind the wheel then I do. And most of that was giggling as she launches it through the air. Its a far more stable/safe ride then any ATV. You can talk/look at maps or whatever as you ride and when its just the two of us no one is eating dust.
NO REGRETS ...Lots of giggles

What are the rules as far as where you can and cannot ride the wider model RZR as opposed to the 50 inch trail model? I am seeing alot of folks going with the wider models, so I am thinking there are trails to ride these on or are people just using these on private land? Thanks.

In recent years almost all Wis trail systems/private clubs are allowing for UTVs I believe only some Federal park trails are not yet on board. They don't want to open it up to truck/jeep traffic.
In The area that I do most of my riding (Tomahawk WI) all trails are open to UTVs as long as they are under 65in wide.
In the last month we have seen all clubs in our area doing extensive work on widening trails. Its my understanding Oneida Co will soon be on line.
Widening trails has become a growing trend. Making most trails safer
I was reluctant to own a UTV before this trend started. But now its become apparent that UTVs are here to stay

Lukester, I need to hire you as a consultant to come and sell this utv thing to the wife. I can see you do a 90 minute presentation, and I'll throw in the trip to Vegas for 3 days! :D

Hey, I got a lot more time then that selling it to MY WIFE!

Here is what you do. Arrange a test drive with your local dealer. And let HER drive for lets say an hour and a half. That is a great 90 minute presentation. Then take her to Vegas. Happy wife...happy life!
Works for me Lukester

Randy, I got a ride in a Wildcat this past weekend. All I can say is wow and that I almost needed an adult diaper by the time we came back on a short ride. WOW, fast, handles awesome and just really cool.

My husband and I bought out Polaris Ranger 500 last year on Memorial Day weekend after having one more cruddy year of snowmobiling. We have had a ball taking our friends on rides (it's the crew version) because we can talk easily between the 4 of us. Henry's is our favorite place to hit on the weekends. Just wanted you to know that we have had NO REGRETS spending the money to get the one we wanted. We buy one trail pass, insure one 4 wheeler and towing it behind the truck is not a problem. To date, we now have 3,300 miles on it and will be replacing another set of tires soon : )
Highly recommend a side by side - if not the crew version for family or older friends....
Happy trails!

So you got a taste of it, I'm still trying to find some time this summer to get in one!!! Man if it isn't the wife, its the kids, not the kids its work, heck before you know it, it'll be October!!!

It handles pretty well, eh?! Who and where did you get a chance to soil yourself?! I did stop by Neilsens to see if they had one, but no luck.

IT SUCKS BEING POOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally I can get on this post because today I took my 1st ride/drive on a Polaris RZR. Didn't want to ever do it as I was thinkin I might like it and the Hubby would have my blessing to buy one. Well, it was OK, nice ride, strange having a steering wheel instead of handlebars. You can have conversations with your co pilet going down the trails, rode smooth. BUT my machine is an "***" Scrambler, as my hubby puts it, I will never give that up. I like to get muddy. If the 4 seat Polaris was legal in the NFS here in WI (too wide, gotta be 50 in), I would say YES , but I would like to take our 2 dogs with us, or human company. Just saying............... As far as riding a sled, well, we bought a 2 up sled, thought that would be fun, but NO, boring to ride in back and not be in control. The RZR wasn't so bad, didn't spill my drink, that was a plus. Guess it depends what your $$$$ situation is ,priorities come 1st. Sold my 87 BMW last year(great on gas but had other issues), but told Hubby we would look silly driving a RZR back to IA! Also told him if we sell the camper( been used 2 times since we moved up here "in the woods" 5 years ago, and his fishing boat(hasn't been used yet this year), then YA. I thought we retired up here for atv/snowmobiling but he got himself involved in the Trails North ATV Club treasurer, grooming snowmobile trails, volunteer fire dept, secretary for Bayfield Co Snowmobile Alliance, and taking care of our great elderly friends, and all the projects at our new home. I have a full time job just directing where to go and what is on his schedule for the week. Great job, free room and board!

Doesn't it suck that you retire to be busier than if you were working!!! At least you and the hubby are doing what "you want to do" as oppose to answer to the man!!! Still haven't gotten to ride in a side by side yet! Darn summer been crazy with work and the family, maybe it'll slow down here some day. :)

You got that right frosty, especially the managers and formans we had to work under. Now Hubby only has a woman to work under and answer to!
